Finnish Lapphund: Breed Field Guide Cards

Finnish Lapphunds were developed in northern Finland as reindeer herding and guarding dogs. FCI Standard No. 189 places the breed in Group 5, Section 3.4, and describes the Finnish Lapphund as alert, brave, calm, eager to learn, peaceful, and trustworthy. The AKC describes the breed as a weatherproof, substantial reindeer herder and highlights its notably friendly nature. 12

The Royal Kennel Club standard gives ideal heights of 49 cm for dogs and 44 cm for bitches, with an allowance of 3 cm either way. Its owner-facing profile lists up to one hour of exercise per day, grooming once a week, a lifespan of over 12 years, and a small house as possible starting points. 34

Family fit depends on the household routine. A Finnish Lapphund may suit people who want an involved companion and can provide daily outdoor time, training, regular brushing, and room for a watchful voice. Erect or semi-erect ears, a high-set plumed tail, a long coarse outer coat, and a soft dense undercoat are useful field checks when identifying the breed. 23
