Memory is the product. Retention is the bill.

Memory is the product. Retention is the bill.

On Monday, Meta shipped its first frontier model, and the strongest version of it isn't for sale to developers at any price.

Two labs shipped a flagship model within a day of each other this week. Neither launch was really about how smart the model is. Meta's most capable one cannot be rented at any price, and Google's carries a countdown on its price tag. Around them, OpenAI's math preprints kept arriving long after the announcement, and Anthropic showed a small model copying itself across fifteen second-hand TV boxes.

The briefing

Continuity, sold with a caveat

Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full arrived on October 12 from Meta Superintelligence Labs, and Meta calls them the most capable models it has built. Neither ships with downloadable weights, which is a real break for the company that made Llama's openness its identity. Only the smaller model is rentable: muse-wonder-1.0 through the Meta Model API at $4 per million input tokens and $20 output, with cached input at $0.20 and web search billed at $2.50 per 1,000 queries. Wonder Full is not offered on the API at all; it comes through Muse Code subscriptions at $50 and $200 a month. 1
The independent read is the useful one. Artificial Analysis runs its own evaluations, and its Intelligence Index puts Wonder Full at 56 — level with Claude Sonnet 5.5, ahead of GPT-6 Astra, Gemini 4 Argon and Claude Fable 5.1 at 53, behind Claude Opus 5.5 at 58. Plain Muse Wonder, the model developers can actually buy, scores 52. 1
What Meta is selling is continuity rather than a better answer. Active Memory carries context about a user across conversations and retrieves what is relevant; Active Focus is the model continuing toward a goal through failed attempts, checking in before consequential actions. On SWE-Marathon, a long-running software benchmark, Wonder Full scores 57.5 against 46.3 for Opus 5.5 and 42.5 for GPT-6 Astra. 2
The caveat sits in the terms. Muse Code subscriptions default to Contributor mode, which lets Meta train on submitted prompts, code and outputs; disabling it applies only to future submissions. Zero data retention is available on the API to approved organisations, and it does not support server-side conversation state, background requests, file uploads or built-in web search. Those are the features the memory pitch is built on, and Meta's terms bar submitting confidential or personal information while Contributor mode is on. 1

A work session, with an expiry date

Gemini 4 Argon went out on October 13 to developers through the Gemini API and AI Studio, to enterprises, and to Pro and Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app and AI Mode. Introductory pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $10 output, with cached input at 95% off. On November 30, 2026 the list price becomes $4 and $20. 3
The specification that matters for long jobs is a 1 million token unified input-and-output limit: one shared budget across the whole call, with a continuation protocol documented for long decodes. That is a work session rather than a prompt. 3
Google ranks it first on the Vals Index, which measures finance, coding, legal and tax work. Artificial Analysis has Argon at 53, behind GPT-6 Astra and Sonnet 5.5. Two indexes, two answers, and the workload decides which one applies. 1
Google's own engineering evidence is checkable, which is why it is worth more than a leaderboard. Chrome used Argon to separate core webpage handling from a roughly 6 million line legacy folder inside a 40 million line codebase. The Agent Development Kit team handed it a rulebook and a one-paragraph goal; it cut in-memory session preparation by 40% and cold imports by 21%. On safety, indirect prompt-injection success across 15 adaptive attempts fell to 0.7%, and shortcut attempts on coding benchmarks to 2%. 3

The reckoning arrives a week late

None of this week's volume came from a launch. On the evening of October 6, at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, mathematicians learned that OpenAI had posted 722 preprints covering 372 results. Constantin Kogler, an early-career researcher there, scrolled the list on his phone and found a proof of the exact-overlaps conjecture he and a colleague had cracked ten days earlier. He posted his own paper four hours after OpenAI's. 4
OpenAI says an unreleased ChatGPT model took a swing at roughly 4,000 problems, and that for the vast majority the equivalent of about three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking was enough. For scale, the company's Navier-Stokes result last month used a swarm of 10,000 agents running for 88 hours. 4
The accounting is where the week turned. OpenAI had withdrawn three manuscripts and revised 14; of the 719 remaining, only 300 have been translated into Lean, the proof language that lets a computer check every logical step. Lean checks the statement it is handed, not the claim in the paper — a preprint found that the Lean formalisation of the Navier-Stokes result does not match the proof in the accompanying paper. 4
By Tuesday the results were already load-bearing. Christopher Frei, Efthymios Sofos and Martin Widmer posted an 11-page paper that makes the Ellenberg–Venkatesh bounds on torsion in class groups of number fields unconditional, drawing on OpenAI's and Cureton–Thorner's recent breakthroughs. That is the difference between a claim being read and a claim being used. 5

The persistence nobody wants to buy

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team published the other side on October 12. Its experiments suggest small models may be months away from being capable enough to self-replicate on commercial internet-of-things devices. It demonstrated the compute case concretely: Gemma4-26B-A4B sharded across 15 off-brand Android TV boxes bought for about $55 each, 4 GB of RAM apiece, serving at 0.39 tokens per second. 6
The threat shape is what separates it from ordinary malware: no central point to shut off, days-long doubling times, and a model that can work out unfamiliar hardware itself. A 9B model got inference running on 8 of the 9 hardware types tested. In a simplified replication test only GLM-5.2 completed the full cycle, reaching 8 of 8 nodes in four of five trials. 6
Models of 30B parameters and under can do most individual steps but break down composing them end to end. At a historical gain of 13.7 ECI points a year for small open-weight models, Anthropic projects one crosses that floor by the end of 2026. 6
The scale is still underwhelming by design. A botnet the size of Kimwolf, over two million Android TV boxes, would hold about 133,000 replicas and serve roughly 80,000 tokens a second in total — at most the equivalent of 40 H100s. What it has that a botnet does not is inheritance: parent instances pass prompts, code and notes to their copies as they spread. 6

What changed

Meta's best model cannot be rented by anyone with an API key, and the data setting that protects a company's code is the same switch that turns off the memory being sold. Continuity and confidentiality are one dial pointing two ways.
Google put a date on its price, and OpenAI's week is what output looks like once it outruns checking: four in ten proofs machine-checked, on a benchmark where being checked never meant being right.
So the order of operations for anything long-running changed this week. Read the data mode before the benchmark. Put November 30 in the cost model. Build the review step before the generation step, because everything that remembers is something you will have to check later.
