OneMain MyMoney negotiates free behind a loan gate — plus the Cox call that moves you onto Spectrum's new price list

OneMain MyMoney's bill negotiation costs nothing but is reserved for OneMain borrowers and Brightway cardholders, and a run of dated September customer reports shows both what it wins and what it misses; the second half is the five-step call that gets Spectrum's mid-September price list onto an old Cox internet account.

Charter closed its purchase of Cox on August 20, and Spectrum's products, pricing and packaging reached the former Cox markets in mid-September. Charter's letter to those customers says nothing changes unless the customer asks — which is why this week's call works: the new price list is public before anyone applies it to your account. 12
OneMain MyMoney, the service once called Trim, negotiates bills for nothing, and its own help pages say who is allowed in. The internet call is unusually productive this month: your provider has published the prices it charges new customers but has not applied them to you.

Part 1: OneMain MyMoney rechecked

The fee is zero, and the door is narrow

The company's own answer is plain: "Yes! Bill Negotiation is a FREE, exclusive service for OneMain and Brightway customers." The app is free to anyone, which is where the confusion starts — the sign-up page is open, the negotiation desk is not. You reach the desk by signing in through an OneMain Financial account. 345
CNBC Select, in a review updated April 30, 2026, still lists this negotiation at "33% of any savings you receive" and calls it the best option for medical bills. Neither matches the company's documentation: the help centre names no percentage, and medical bills never appear on the list of bills it negotiates. 67
Supported: most wireless, internet, phone, cable and home security bills, plus SiriusXM. Excluded, in the company's words: prepaid service, electricity, garbage, water, and every credit card bill. 6

What the negotiation promises about your account

The published process: upload a bill; the negotiator may ask you to authenticate your account with the provider; it requests a lower rate or a one-time credit; and any saving shows on your bill within one to two months. When no monthly saving is left, the company says it "will negotiate for a one-time credit instead." 5
Three commitments matter before you hand over a bill. The company "will never sign you up for a contract without your permission"; it avoids downgrading your service "unless it's clear that a cheaper plan will better fit your usage patterns and you have approved the changes"; and it "may upgrade your plan if a better promotion is available that will save you money." Approval is required before a plan change or a contract — not before leaving a plan alone. 58

September's dated reports

The Trustpilot profile carries 2,588 reviews, 409 of them in the past twelve months, and the company invites its customers to review — so read them as individual outcomes, not a success rate. 9
The wins come with dollars. September 26: $45 a month for 24 months. September 18: $140 saved for one year. September 7: $160 a month. 101112
Three reports matter more. On September 20, a four-star review says the negotiation was worth no more than "just $10 a month," and that switching providers would save $40 a month. On September 26, a one-star report says it "added Latin TV to my account without my permission" and shipped a router the customer never asked for. On September 13, a five-star report describes being asked what to keep and what to give up on a phone plan. Save the statement from the month you start, and read the next one for anything you did not ask for. 131415
Verdict: RECOMMEND if you already hold an OneMain loan or a Brightway card; SKIP otherwise. Nothing here costs money at the door — no percentage, no success fee, no subscription — which makes it the cheapest outsourced negotiation on this channel's list for those who can open it. Everyone else finds a closed door, not a price.

Part 2: The five-step call that claims the new internet price

Universal opener, any internet provider: "I pay $[your all-in monthly total] for [your plan]. [Competitor] is quoting $[their price] for [their speed] at my address, and I would rather stay. What is the best rate you can put me on today?"

What your provider just published

PlanSpeedPublished year-1 pricePrevious list price
Spectrum Internet 100100 Mbps$30/mo—
Spectrum Internet 500500 Mbps$40/mo$50/mo
Spectrum Internet 1 Gig1 Gbps$60/mo$70/mo
Spectrum Internet 2 Gig, select areas2 Gbps$80/mo$90/mo
A modem is included with every plan, Advanced WiFi costs $10 a month and comes included with 1 Gig, and none of the four carries a data cap or a contract. These are first-year prices; standard rates follow. Bundles cost more and hold longer: two years for internet plus two mobile lines, three for internet plus mobile plus TV. 1617

What the $1,000 guarantee actually requires

The Savings Guarantee printed beside those prices is not for you if you were a Cox customer an hour ago. It requires switching at least two paid mobile lines away from Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile, and it requires new customers to be switching internet provider. A former Cox customer is neither. Claim the published internet price, not the guarantee. 18

Step 1: Arrive with the plan name and the published number

The account and billing line is 833-949-0036, answered 24 hours and listed separately from the sales line on the same page. Name the plan you want: one customer reported being told nothing could be done "since I didn't know the name of the $70 plan," because the representative could only compare plans the customer could name. Then give the number: "Internet 500 is on your own site at $40 a month for the first year. I am paying $94. Can you move me onto that?" One customer went from $94 to $70 on gigabit through online chat alone. 192021

Step 2: Cite one competitor priced at your own address

The representative can see what is available at your house, so general complaints do nothing. A commenter who works these calls put it plainly: the company knows the choices at your house number, and "if they have fiber competing they will not discount you." Price your own address first: AT&T Fiber publishes 300 Mbps unlimited from $35 a month in select markets, no annual contract; T-Mobile 5G home internet publishes $35 a month with AutoPay and a voice line, under a five-year price guarantee. 222324
Then say one true sentence: "AT&T is quoting me $35 for 300 megabits at my address. I would rather stay with you. Can you match it?" A San Diego customer who "quoted At&t's price" and asked whether they "could beat their rates or at least match them" was moved onto a cheaper plan at their original rate, locked for five years. 25

Step 3: Ask for the retention desk by name

Ask for "customer retention." Those words earn the transfer: a Maine customer reported that asking for it produced "a department that will do almost anything to keep your business." During a migration this step fails more often. One customer reached a sales representative who pushed a mobile line, then heard "well if you're not gonna buy something" before the line went dead. Another was transferred five times trying to reach anyone who could honour the published internet and TV bundle prices; every transfer dead-ended on an account still held in the old Cox system. Charter says all Cox offshore sales and service moves to the United States over the 18 months after closing, so a badly routed call is expected right now. 2262728

Step 4: Hold the first offer for thirty seconds

Take the offer down before answering: the monthly price, the plan name and speed, whether unlimited data is included, and how long the price holds. One customer accepted a $99 bundle for gigabit with a mobile line and later found a $215 bill. Another was told a $60 plan cost $70 with a streaming box, and that a phone shipped to them had to be activated to get the price. A third noticed gigabit "is cheaper for the next 12 months, but I lose my unlimited data. Seems like a bribe to get people to give up unlimited data." 293031

Step 5: Decline in words, then ask a second time

Say what is wrong with the offer, name the number you want, and stay on the line. The most useful sentence reported this month: "I'm calling to cancel my service in 30 days. I really have a great experience with Spectrum, but this is just a bit out of my budget unfortunately." That customer reports being sent to someone who offered a lower price for a year. Then add your own number: "That is close, but it is a one-year price and I am paying $94 today. If you can get me to $70 on the plan I already have, I will stay. If not, I will finish the change today." 32

Three anti-patterns that backfire

  • The cancellation you will not make. Your provider can price your neighborhood, so a threat it can check is worth nothing. Where no fiber or fixed wireless reaches your address the representative knows, and a customer on such a street reported being offered "basically nothing new… kick rocks." Say it only if you will do it. 2233
  • Calling the wrong department. The sales line sells, and during a migration sales staff answer numbers customers think are service lines. Customers report being upsold on a mobile line while asking about internet. Ask for the retention desk, and if you land in sales, request a transfer before you discuss anything. 3435
  • Buying a longer term to hold a shorter discount. Spectrum prices internet for one year and then moves you to standard rates, while its two-service bundle is priced for two years and its three-service bundle for three. A customer holding a legacy rate locked until 2030 declined the offer on exactly this ground — "a $10 or $20 a month reduction for just 12 months, doesn't work for me" — while another holds $80 for three years and names the one-year guarantee as the worrying part. Match the term to the lock, not to the headline number. 16173637

The savings math for this week

Keep the internet bill and the streaming bill separate. Nothing below doubles up on the same statement, and no figure assumes an offer you have not been given.

What this week's call is worth on the internet bill

  • Reported monthly reductions this month: $7–$24 a month off the internet line
  • One-year term, where the reporter stated one: $84–$288 a year
  • Low end of the reports: $97 to $90 a month on 2 Gig, own equipment
  • High end of the reports: $94 to $70 a month on 1 Gig, negotiated by chat
Those figures come from five reports posted September 21 to 27: $94 to $70; $97 to $90; $140 to $125 after a bill had risen to $170; a $130 bill for 300 Mbps that now includes unlimited data; and a bill down about $100 a month. One went the other way — a $60 plan billed at $70 once a streaming box was attached — so count the low end first and check the next statement. 2138394041

Last week's tool review adds nothing here

Last week's issue rechecked Rocket Money and ended on a skip for standalone negotiation. Its terms have not moved: the Negotiation Fee is user-chosen between 35% and 60% of twelve months of savings, non-refundable, and only Premium+ waives it. It adds $0 to this month's total unless you already pay for the tier that removes the fee. 42

Stacking on the streaming bill

Last week's script acts on the streaming bill instead. Netflix lists Standard with ads at $8.99 and Standard at $19.99, $132 a year between those two tiers. Peacock's increase reached existing subscribers on the next billing date on or after September 17, leaving Premium at $12.99 and Select at $8.99. 4344
  • One internet line repriced: $84–$288 a year, $0 in fees
  • One internet line plus last week's streaming flow: $111–$348 a year, $0 in fees
  • Two internet lines plus the same streaming flow: $195–$636 a year, $0 in fees
Every figure comes out of a call or a screen you work yourself. Save the statement from the month you start, and check the next one before counting it.
