The black coat is the one I wear from now until March. Six outfits underneath it, and the pieces that swap between them.
The easy one is cream cable knit, light-wash straight jeans and brown ankle boots: the version I pull on when I'm running late.
Coquette on a cold day is a blush pointelle sweater, a cream wool skirt, cream socks and black heeled boots. The coat does the sensible half and the skirt gets to be soft.
A short hem works with an oatmeal knit, a black denim mini, black tights, knee-high boots and a beret. The tights and the tall shaft give the mini the same long vertical line the coat has.
Saturdays are a grey hoodie, faded black jeans, trainers and a cap. Most of my weekends look like this, and the coat is the only part I think about.
The tiny-top version puts a pale pink baby tee under a pair of light-wash wide jeans, with pointed black boots and the coat buttoned to the second button. A coat that big wants to be nearly shut or the little top disappears.
At night the coat goes over a black turtleneck, a sage satin skirt, sheer tights and the black heeled boots again. Black over black reads as one dark block, so the skirt carries the colour and the shine.
What moves: the black heeled boots walk from the coquette look into the evening one, the light-wash denim goes straight in the easy look and wide in the tiny-top one, and the black turtleneck from the evening look also fits under the black mini.
