Player Story: Lamine Yamal - nineteen, somehow not new anymore

Lamine Yamal turns 19 on July 13, which is a ridiculous sentence because Spain already treat him like a veteran problem-solver.

The birthday lands in the quiet pocket before the storm. Spain face France in Tuesday's World Cup semi-final at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, with kickoff listed at 2 p.m. local, 3 p.m. ET and 12 p.m. PT. 12 Spain arrived there by beating Belgium 2-1; France got there by beating Morocco 2-0. 2

Yamal was born on 13 July 2007, plays on the right wing, and made his Spain debut at 16. FIFA's pre-tournament profile already framed him less as a prospect than as one of the players Spain would hand the ball to when a match tightened. 3

That is the strange part. Most 19-year-olds are still being protected from the moment. Yamal is being asked to bend it. At EURO 2024, he became the youngest player to appear at the tournament, then the youngest scorer, with the goal coming against France in the semi-final. 4 Now France get him again, older by two years and still young enough that the phrase barely makes sense.

The matchup is not complicated for the casual fan: if France can push Yamal backward, Spain lose their cleanest panic button. If Spain can isolate him against a defender in space, France have to tilt cover toward him, and that opens the middle for Dani Olmo, Fabian Ruiz and the late runners who keep deciding Spain games.

One-line verdict: Yamal's birthday is cute; the job waiting for him is not.

"As time passes, you realise there are very good players and those that are special. Lamine belongs in that second category." - Luis de la Fuente 5
