The Nokia 9000 Communicator arrived in 1996 as a phone with a second life: open the hinge and the device became a QWERTY workstation for messages, documents, web access, fax, and organizing information. Nokia announced the model on 14 March 1996 and launched it on 15 August 1996. 12

The hinge made the workflow legible. Voice calls stayed on the outside; writing and browsing required the larger inner screen and keyboard. The manual's desktop requirement completed the chain: a document could travel through infrared or a serial connection, but the pocket office still depended on a period computer. The Science Museum Group records the phone, battery, floppy disk, and manual together, preserving that connected-workplace logic as part of the object. 5
