Roster budgets jump, injuries reshape the summer, and Virginia lands a four-star

The 2026-27 men's season is already being shaped by money. The Athletic surveyed 25 high-major coaches at Peach Jam and estimated that every major league raised its average roster budget from last season. The figures are anonymous estimates, not audited payrolls, but the direction is clear: the gap between a competitive roster and an ordinary one is getting more expensive. 1

The SEC now sits well above the other four leagues in the survey, and the reported roster market is especially expensive at center. Coaches told The Athletic that a high-major starting center costs roughly $1.5 million, with some top earners reaching about three times that figure. The practical signal is easy to see: deep benches are becoming a spending test as much as a coaching test. 1

Minnesota gave Niko Medved a contract extension through the 2032 season after a difficult first year at his alma mater. The Gophers went 15-18 overall, 8-12 in the Big Ten and 11th in the league, but three of their eight conference wins came against ranked opponents and the team reached the College Basketball Crown in Las Vegas. Cade Tyson led Minnesota at 19.6 points per game. The school's release also said the roster had only two returners and 13 newcomers, with injuries affecting the season. 2

Kentucky received better news with a warning attached. Guard Kam Williams needed a second foot surgery after his recovery stalled, coach Mark Pope said July 24. Pope said the 6-foot-7 junior is progressing and that Kentucky has high confidence he will be available for the season. Williams appeared in 24 games last year, starting seven, and averaged 6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1 assist. 3

Tennessee is managing a less certain timeline with Belmont transfer Tyler Lundblade. Rick Barnes said July 23 that Lundblade had been unable to do much five-on-five work for roughly two months because of a back injury, though the coach expects him to be fine. Lundblade led the country in free-throw percentage at 93.41% last season, made 3.59 three-pointers per game and averaged 15.9 points for Belmont. Tennessee has 11 newcomers, which makes the veteran shooter's availability more important to a team still building its on-court voice. 4

That is the offseason's main competitive question for high-major teams: spending can add depth, but it cannot make a player available before he is healthy. Minnesota's extension rewards a coach who navigated a depleted lineup; Kentucky and Tennessee are still waiting to see what their intended rotations look like.

Tennessee's roster rebuild took a direct hit when guard Avery Mills underwent surgery for a torn ACL and meniscus in her right knee. Mills said July 23 that her recovery had started, while coach Kim Caldwell had already said she would miss an extended period. Mills was the first player to transfer to Tennessee after the team's returners entered the portal, and she arrived as the Lady Vols' top three-point shooting addition: 42.7% on 7.4 attempts per game last season, with 15.3 points, 4 rebounds and 2.2 assists for Liberty. Tennessee signed 13 portal players and two freshmen in the rebuild. 5

Virginia added a longer-term piece. Four-star wing Nevaeh Roberson committed to the Cavaliers' 2027 class on July 22, giving first-year coach Aaron Roussell a commitment from the No. 48 recruit in On3's ranking. The 6-foot-2 Maryland product averaged 11.6 points and nearly 5 rebounds for Team Takeover on the EYBL circuit this spring. The report described her as a versatile guard-wing who can score outside, finish at the rim and defend multiple positions. 6

The two stories point in opposite directions. Tennessee needs to replace a proven shooter immediately, while Virginia is adding a future piece that fits a new coach's system. Both are roster stories, but only one changes the next season's rotation right away.

July is still the NCAA offseason. Fox Sports' current tracker describes the sport as a period of transfers, coaching changes, extensions, injuries and returns rather than live games, and CBS Sports placed the first men's tip of the 2026-27 season on Nov. 1 in a Notre Dame-Villanova game in Rome. There were no NCAA men's or women's regular-season results, conference standings movements, or player-of-the-week statistical lines to report for July 20-27. 78

The next meaningful tests are practical ones: whether Williams and Lundblade return to full work, how Kentucky and Tennessee adjust their rotations, and whether Tennessee can replace Mills' shooting without sacrificing volume. The broader test is financial. If the reported budget estimates hold, the 2026-27 race will begin with more expensive benches and less certainty about who can actually play.
