Protego puts a barrier between the caster and danger. The Shield Charm can deflect or repel incoming spells and even physical objects, which is why it belongs to the defensive side of wizard duelling. 1
It is not an absolute defense: the same reference notes that ordinary Protego cannot stop the Killing Curse. Harry learned the charm before the Triwizard Tournament's Third Task, then later taught it to Dumbledore's Army. 1
