Russell's 12.20 leads the week
Masai Russell’s Monaco meeting record leads the July 5-12 Team USA briefing, with Jordan Lee’s Wimbledon boys’ title, WTCS Hamburg relay stakes, and next-week watch points for U.S. Classic, Diamond League London, and ISSF Hangzhou.
Masai Russell delivered the U.S. win at Monaco. Russell won the Monaco Diamond League women's 100m hurdles in 12.20, set the meeting record, and led a U.S. 1-2 with Alaysha Johnson second in 12.38. 1 This briefing covers the July 5, 2:29 p.m. ET through July 12, 2:00 p.m. ET window, with Wimbledon finishing its second week, Monaco adding track results, and WTCS Hamburg providing the week's explicit LA28 qualification note.
The reader task is straightforward: catch up on the completed U.S. results, then choose between gymnastics and track next weekend. Lee, a 16-year-old American qualifier, won the Wimbledon boys' singles title 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 over Cruz Hewitt. 2
The short list for Team USA fans
- Russell is the headline result. Russell's 12.20 in Monaco beat Johnson by 0.18 seconds and improved the meeting record in the strongest U.S. result from the Monaco meet. 1
- Monaco produced more U.S. depth than one win. Graham Blanks finished second in the men's 5000m in 12:52.60, Jordan Anthony finished second in the men's 100m in 9.92, Jacory Patterson ran a 43.96 personal best for second in the men's 400m, Rai Benjamin was third in 44.13, Aaliyah Butler was second in the women's 400m in a 48.84 personal best, and Amanda Moll cleared 4.72m for second in the women's pole vault. 1
- Wimbledon ended as a mixed U.S. tennis week. Coco Gauff lost her semifinal to Karolina Muchova 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(12-10), while Lee gave the U.S. a junior singles title on the final weekend. 23
- Hamburg matters because the relay result touches LA28. France won the Mixed Relay World Championship in 1:18:37 and earned the first direct mixed relay Olympic qualification place for LA28, while the U.S. finished fourth in 1:19:03. 4
- Next weekend is a viewing split. U.S. Classic runs July 17-18 in Hartford, Diamond League London is July 18, and ISSF World Cup Hangzhou begins July 20. 567
Results that changed the form picture
| Sport | Team USA signal | Why it matters now |
|---|---|---|
| Track, women's 100m hurdles | Russell won Monaco in 12.20, with Johnson second in 12.38. 1 | Monaco gives Russell a recent Diamond League win and gives Johnson another podium-level result in the same event. |
| Track, sprints and 400m | Anthony was second in the Monaco 100m in 9.92; Patterson was second in the 400m in 43.96; Benjamin was third in the 400m in 44.13; Butler was second in the women's 400m in 48.84. 1 | The U.S. did not need a single sprint win in Monaco to leave with useful evidence. The 100m and 400m results show several Americans still converting elite fields into podium-level marks. |
| Track, distance and field | Blanks finished second in the 5000m in 12:52.60, 0.06 seconds behind the winner, and Moll finished second in the pole vault at 4.72m. 1 | Blanks' near-win gives U.S. distance fans a current benchmark against Diamond League opposition, while Moll's clearance keeps the American pole vault depth story active. |
| Tennis, Wimbledon | Gauff lost to Muchova in the women's semifinals, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(12-10), and Lee won the boys' singles final over Hewitt, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. 23 | Gauff's run stopped one match short of the final, but Lee's junior title gives U.S. tennis a fresh long-range name to track beyond the senior draw. |
| Triathlon, WTCS Hamburg | Taylor Spivey was the top U.S. woman in fourth in 56:05; Seth Rider was the top U.S. man in 16th, and Morgan Pearson finished 29th. 89 | Spivey kept the U.S. women close to the front of a sprint-distance WTCS race, while the U.S. men left Hamburg without a top-10 result. |
Monaco also gave Gabby Thomas a direct comparison against the current 200m world lead. Julien Alfred won the women's 200m in 21.51, a world lead, meeting record, and national record, while Thomas finished third in 21.84. 10 For Thomas, that result gives a clear Monaco benchmark against Alfred before the next major championship build-up.
At the coverage cutoff, Wimbledon had one senior final result available and one men's final still unresolved in the available live record. Linda Noskova beat Muchova 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 for her first Grand Slam singles title, while the available men's final record still listed Jannik Sinner vs. Alexander Zverev as live rather than final at the coverage cutoff. 1112 ESPN was the U.S. rightsholder for the gentlemen's championship broadcast on July 12 at 11 a.m. ET. 13
Qualification and calendar stakes
Hamburg is the only event in this week's completed set with a direct LA28 qualification note in the available facts. France won the Mixed Relay World Championship in 1:18:37 and secured the first direct mixed relay Olympic berth for LA28; the U.S. was fourth in 1:19:03. 4 The U.S. result still matters for form, but it does not carry the same qualification pressure because the U.S. already has mixed relay qualification as the LA28 host nation. 4
The U.S. Classic is the next domestic gymnastics checkpoint. The event is scheduled for July 17-18 at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut, with 24 senior women listed as of July 6. 5 Ohashi is the most prominent comeback story in the field because her return is tied to the chase for a qualifying score, while Jade Carey and Leanne Wong are also listed in the senior field. 514
ISSF World Cup Hangzhou runs July 20-29 at Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre in Hangzhou, China. 7 USA Shooting announced rifle and pistol national team selections for 2026 ISSF World Cups on April 21, but the available USA Shooting materials did not identify a U.S. shotgun roster for Hangzhou by the July 12 cutoff. 15 For fans planning ahead, that leaves Hangzhou as a calendar item pending fuller roster confirmation.
July 17-20 watch calendar

| July 18, 2 p.m. ET | U.S. Classic junior women | The junior session sits before the senior women's prime-time window. 5 | USAG YouTube is listed for the junior women's session at 2 p.m. ET. 5 |
| July 18, 7 p.m. ET | U.S. Classic senior women | Ohashi, Carey, Wong, and other senior women are the main Team USA gymnastics viewing block. 514 | Peacock is listed for U.S. viewers at 7 p.m. ET, with a YouTube international feed also listed. 5 |
| July 18 | Diamond League London | Confirmed U.S. names include Thomas, Benjamin, Valerie Sion, Ja'Kobe Tharp, Cooper Lutkenhaus, Cordell Tinch, and Claire Bryant. 6 | The event is at London Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park; the available event materials did not give a confirmed U.S. broadcaster. 16 |
| July 20 | ISSF World Cup Hangzhou begins | The rifle/pistol team has already been announced, while the U.S. shotgun roster was not identified in the available USA Shooting materials by the July 12 cutoff. 15 | Hangzhou runs July 20-29 at Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre. 7 |
For U.S. fans planning the next window, gymnastics has the clearest confirmed viewing block, London has the confirmed U.S. track names listed above, and Hangzhou needs one more roster piece before it becomes a complete Team USA watch card.
