Elijah Just made New Zealand history. Swansea will test what it means
Elijah Just's two-goal World Cup breakthrough gave New Zealand a new record; his move to Swansea creates the next test of whether the moment becomes a regular career.
In 54 minutes of New Zealand's opening match at the 2026 World Cup, Elijah Just became the country's first player to score twice in a World Cup game. The tournament ended with three goals for the 26-year-old winger. On July 22, Swansea City announced his arrival; on Aug. 8, he made his debut against Birmingham in the Carabao Cup. 1
The first question was whether Just could seize a World Cup moment. He answered it quickly. The next question is whether Swansea can turn that moment into a career that lasts beyond the highlights.
The moment arrived early
Against IR Iran on June 15 at Los Angeles Stadium, Just gave New Zealand the lead in the seventh minute with a low, drilled finish. Just scored again early in the second half after Chris Wood helped create the chance. Iran came back twice, and the match finished 2-2. FIFA recorded the brace as the first time a New Zealand player had scored two goals in one World Cup match; AP independently confirmed the record and the two Wood assists. 23
Just had arrived after a strong first season with Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership. AP reported that he had been in the conversation for the club's player-of-the-year award. His first goal for New Zealand carried the shock of a player realizing the stage had caught up with him.
"It was incredible. To score the first goal, the emotions took over. I could almost not believe it... it was such an amazing start to the game." — Elijah Just 2
Why New Zealand felt the brace
New Zealand entered the tournament looking for its first World Cup win and its first knockout appearance. AP reported that Just's two goals against Iran matched New Zealand's entire scoring total at both the 1982 and 2010 World Cups. 4
That history makes the brace more than a personal milestone. Just gave the All Whites a player attached to one of their clearest World Cup memories, and he did it with two finishes that required nerve rather than permission.
Swansea changes the question
FIFA's Aug. 17 update placed the move in context: Just's World Cup came after his maiden campaign in Scottish football, and he became the first Motherwell player to score at the tournament. Swansea now gives him a Championship season in which opponents will study him, teammates will expect him, and selection will arrive week after week. 1
The brace made Just a New Zealand record-holder. The club season will show whether it also made him a regular.
Quote of the Day
"It's very special. We've not been to too many World Cups so hopefully I am the first of many to score two or more. So the future is looking bright." — Elijah Just 2
