Carlsson resets the NHL market

Anaheim center Leo Carlsson is staying with the Ducks, Chicago center Connor Bedard is no longer a clean early-round fantasy pick for September drafts, and the NHL's quiet trade board made the restricted free-agent market the center of the off-season week. The Anaheim Ducks matched Philadelphia's five-year, $90M offer sheet for Carlsson on July 9, locking in an $18M average annual value that USA Today reported as the highest AAV in the NHL. 12

That number matters beyond Anaheim. Bedard, still an unsigned restricted free agent, had left shoulder surgery on July 8 and is expected to need four months to recover, while Chicago's early-season lineup planning now has center Frank Nazar and defenseman Bowen Byram taking on more visible offensive responsibility. 34

Carlsson's match is the main price point from the week. Anaheim kept a 21-year-old center who produced 29 goals, 38 assists, and 67 points in 70 regular-season games, then added 11 points in 12 playoff games. 1 If Anaheim had declined, Philadelphia would have owed four first-round picks as compensation. 2

For fantasy, Carlsson's team context did not change, but his role looks locked in. A contract at that level points to prime scoring opportunities, and Anaheim now has to build around his cap number. USA Today reported that the Ducks had about $9M in remaining cap space after matching Carlsson and re-signing Pavel Mintyukov and Tyson Hinds. 2

Hayton's case is smaller but messier. Utah matched a one-year, $4.775M AAV offer sheet for a center who had 10 goals, 15 assists, and 25 points in 67 games last season. 5 The Hockey Writers noted that Utah can discuss an extension with Hayton after Jan. 1, but the one-year no-trade restriction limits Utah's flexibility if a longer deal does not follow. 6

For fantasy, Hayton is more of a deployment watch than a draft-board mover. His 2024-25 season was much stronger, with 20 goals, 26 assists, 46 points, seven power-play goals, 15 power-play points, and seven game-winning goals. 5 If Utah gives him top-six minutes and power-play usage, he becomes relevant in deeper formats; without that role, the matched offer sheet is bigger real-life news than fantasy news.

Bedard's injury has two separate effects. The first is direct missed time: NHL.com reported that Bedard will miss the start of 2026-27 after left shoulder surgery and is expected to need four months to recover. 3 The second is team environment: Chicago has to replace its best offensive player for at least the first month, and NHL.com identified Nazar as a possible top-line center while Byram should see heavy power-play work. 4

That makes Bedard a redraft discount question, not a simple fade. A healthy Bedard would be priced for a full-season scoring role, but a four-month recovery timeline cuts into early category accumulation and raises the cost of spending a premium pick. 3 The fantasy thread reaction is only one community datapoint, but it already shows the kind of draft-room adjustment managers are weighing: one r/fantasyhockey post asked whether he drops from rounds 2-3 to rounds 4-5. 7

Nazar and Byram are the practical watch-list names. Nazar's value depends on whether he opens as Chicago's top-line center, while Byram's value depends on whether the Blackhawks let him run the power play during Bedard's absence. 4 Tyler Bertuzzi, Roman Kantserov, Anton Frondell, Oliver Moore, Nick Lardis, and Ryan Greene also appeared in NHL.com's discussion of possible early-season solutions, but the fantasy signal is clearest where minutes and power-play usage can spike. 4

Chicago Hockey Now reported that Bedard and the Blackhawks had not completed an extension, while noting that Carlsson's $18M cap hit could push the market discussion above the earlier $12M-$16M AAV range in that outlet's framing. 9 That does not mean Bedard has a confirmed ask at that number. It means the comparison point changed before Chicago solved the injury and contract questions.

Claude Giroux returned to Ottawa on a one-year deal with a $2M base salary and up to $3M in performance bonuses. 10 Pro Hockey Rumors reported that Giroux had 49 points in 82 games last season and won more than 63 percent of his faceoffs, which keeps him useful in formats that count draws but makes him more roster-stabilizer than upside pick. 10

Calgary committed five years and $36.25M to Simon Nemec, a 2022 No. 2 pick who had 11 goals and 15 assists in 68 games last season while playing close to 20 minutes per game. 10 Nemec is a better dynasty and keeper-league note than a redraft priority until Calgary's power-play structure is clearer.

The unsigned veteran pool still has scoring names. NHL.com's remaining free-agent list included Patrick Kane, Patrik Laine, Anthony Mantha, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Michael Bunting as available forwards as of July 7. 11 Mantha is the volume bet after a 33-goal, 64-point season with Pittsburgh, while Laine is the injury-rebound swing after playing only five games for Montreal last season. 11

Arbitration is the next calendar pressure. NHL.com reported that 15 players filed for salary arbitration, including Jason Robertson, Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, and Kirby Dach. 12 Pro Hockey Rumors later listed 14 remaining hearing dates from July 20 through Aug. 1 after Xavier Bourgault settled with Ottawa. 13

The league calendar also gets one clear marker before fantasy draft prep starts to sharpen. The NHL is set to announce the full 84-game regular-season schedule on July 16 at 1 p.m. ET, with opening-night matchups coming the day before. 14 Until then, the watch list is simple: Bedard's recovery, Chicago's temporary power-play roles, arbitration settlements, and veteran unrestricted free-agent landing spots.
