NBA Daily Digest: LeBron's documentary talks, Kawhi probe and the Warriors' Curry pivot

LeBron James, Philadelphia 76ers forward, is reportedly close to an ESPN documentary deal modeled on The Last Dance. At the same time, the NBA's salary-cap investigation involving Kawhi Leonard, LA Clippers forward, could run into 2027. There were no NBA games on the July 30 scoreboard, so the meaningful movement came from the league's business and the decisions now facing Golden State. 123

ESPN's July 30 page says "No games on this date." That leaves no new score, playoff result, standings change or series record to report. 3

The official market board is also quiet, but the precise claim is narrower than "nothing happened around the league." NBA.com's offseason tracker was updated July 30, and its newest listed transaction remains the July 28 deal sending Johni Broome, Philadelphia 76ers forward-center, and a 2027 second-round pick to the LA Clippers for cash considerations. No later official entry appears on that board. 4

Yahoo Sports reported July 30 that negotiations between James and ESPN are near completion for a series following James during his first season in Philadelphia and drawing on footage from his career. The report attributes the negotiations to The Athletic and says the financial terms are unknown; ESPN and a representative for James declined comment. This is a reported project, not an announced agreement. 1

The timing matters because James signed a two-year deal with Philadelphia that includes a player option. A crew following one season cannot yet know whether it is documenting his final NBA year or the opening chapter of a two-season run. The more useful takeaway is that the proposed series would make the 76ers' new season part of the public record while James' playing horizon remains open. 1

ESPN reported that the NBA inquiry into whether the Clippers circumvented the salary cap to compensate Leonard through a 2022 endorsement deal could continue into 2027 if the parties cannot agree on findings or discipline. The Clippers deny the allegation. The National Basketball Players Association has indicated it would consider arbitration if the league seeks punishment without enough evidence. 2

The case has a direct roster consequence. A proposed Leonard trade to Toronto is on hold because the Raptors were told they would assume the risk of any penalty attached to Leonard, including a possible suspension or a voided contract. ESPN reported that both teams still intend to complete the trade, but the investigation has to be resolved before that plan can become normal roster business. 2

The Warriors' LeBron pursuit is now useful mainly as a clue to what they chose not to change. ESPN reported that Golden State made an early July pitch that included Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors guard, communicating his interest in a partnership. James chose Philadelphia, and the Warriors are bringing back most of a roster that won 37 games last season. 5

That makes the next Curry contract conversation more consequential than the failed recruitment itself. ESPN reported mutual interest in an extension when Curry becomes eligible in late August, while Golden State's next guaranteed-money window is much lighter after the coming season. The franchise is choosing continuity around Curry, Draymond Green, Golden State Warriors forward, and Jimmy Butler, Golden State Warriors forward; the test will be whether better health turns continuity into a meaningful improvement. 5

No new injury report dated July 30 appeared in the league and ESPN material available for this window. The current ESPN board still lists these older statuses:

Those entries are an availability watch, not fresh July 30 clearances or setbacks. 6

The next league marker is Hall of Fame weekend, not a game slate. Times below are converted from the official Eastern-time schedule to GMT+8. NBA.com's calendar also lists the Oct. 3 NBA Canada Games opener between the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat in Quebec City; no broadcaster is listed there. 7
