Logano's North Wilkesboro control, Chandler Smith's Truck record and the Indianapolis watch list: Week 30

Joey Logano turned North Wilkesboro's return to points racing into a controlled win, leading 323 of 450 laps and beating Denny Hamlin by 0.859 seconds. Chandler Smith then set a Truck Series short-track margin record at the same venue, while the next UTC watch list moves to Indianapolis, Seattle and the World of Outlaws' Canada swing.

The North Wilkesboro Cup race was more about pit-cycle control than a late scramble. Hamlin pitted on Lap 359 and Logano followed one lap later, exiting roughly a half-second ahead. Five cautions accounted for 43 laps, but the final stage ran 175 green-flag laps. 1

Two incidents changed the shape of the race. Alex Bowman turned across Tyler Reddick's nose while trying to enter pit road on Lap 183, trapping several contenders laps down during green-flag stops. Christopher Bell then made contact with Josh Berry, sending Berry into the SAFER barrier and out of the race. Ryan Blaney finished 11th after a speeding penalty, but that was enough to put him through to the In-Season Challenge final.

Smith's Truck win was cleaner and more decisive. Riggs won Stage 1 and recovered to second, but Smith's No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford went untouched through the last 99 laps. The playoff cutline tightened behind them: Stewart Friesen and Tyler Ankrum are tied for the 10th and final spot with three races left, while Jake Garcia sits 11 points back. Post-race inspection confirmed Smith's win; the No. 71 truck lost pit-stall selection at its next event after one lug nut was found not safe and secure. 2

The Cup In-Season Challenge is down to Blaney and Gilliland. Gilliland finished eighth at North Wilkesboro and advanced past Chase Elliott, who finished 17th and three laps down. Blaney finished 11th and advanced past Bell, who was 19th after losing ground in the Lap 183 caution cycle. The winner-take-all final is scheduled for the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 26. 1

The ordinary Cup standings moved in two directions at once. Hamlin's runner-up finish extended his lead, while Logano jumped from 17th to 15th and now sits 49 points above the current Chase cutoff. Van Gisbergen climbed to 14th and is 54 points above the cutline. That gives the Brickyard added weight for drivers who are safe on points but still need a win or a stronger cushion before the field is set.

The regional result with the clearest championship shape came from Sonoma. Kalitta's Top Fuel win moved him to within 85 points of teammate Shawn Langdon, while Vandergriff's Funny Car victory cut Ron Capps' lead to 74 points. NHRA returns to Pacific Raceways in Seattle on July 24-26 for the Northwest Nationals. 4

There was no WeatherTech SportsCar Championship or Michelin Pilot Challenge race in the July 13-19 window. The 2026 calendar places CTMP on July 10-12 and the next combined round at Road America on July 30-August 2, with all four WeatherTech classes and the Michelin Pilot Challenge on the program. 5

The new team story is Car Blanche, which entered WeatherTech after acquiring the previous van der Steur Racing operation. After a GTD podium at Watkins Glen, the team moved its No. 68 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo into GTD PRO for CTMP, where Valentin Hasse Clot and Scott Andrews finished 10th. The team says it may rotate between GTD and GTD PRO for the remaining weekends and is targeting a full-season GTD PRO effort in 2027. 6

Road America's four-mile circuit is the next IMSA checkpoint. The event page lists the WeatherTech race for Sunday, August 2, the Road America 120 for Saturday, August 1, and global streams on IMSA.TV and YouTube alongside Peacock coverage. 7

NASCAR's July 15 Daytona package changes apply to the August 29 Coke Zero Sugar 400, the regular-season finale that sets the 16-driver Chase field. The rear spoiler drops from seven inches to four, horsepower falls from 510 to 465, and NASCAR expects single-car runs to be about 3 mph faster while pack speed stays roughly the same. The goal is to give cars more freedom to build runs and pass instead of locking the field into fuel-saving track-position races. NASCAR said future superspeedway use of the package will be decided later. 8
