The Segway: A Future With Nowhere To Go
Episode guide
The Segway arrived as a machine that seemed to make balance disappear. Its promise was bigger than a new vehicle: faster than walking, smaller than a car, and capable of changing how short trips worked.
The launch created enormous curiosity. But curiosity did not answer the practical questions. Where could people ride it? Where would they store it? What would it replace? And why would a customer pay around five thousand dollars to discover the answers?
This episode follows the Segway's four-part postmortem: the transportation future the team expected, the visible signals that the product fit controlled environments better than ordinary streets, the decision mismatch between a solved engineering problem and an unsolved adoption context, and the lessons later mobility products translated.
What this episode covers
- Why a dramatic technology demo proved control, but not a repeatable daily trip.
- How price, storage, social visibility, city rules, and the comparison with walking weakened the consumer launch together.
- Why tours, campuses, security teams, and industrial sites revealed a stronger beachhead than the mass market.
- What product teams can learn about environment, switching costs, first markets, and attention versus adoption.
The Segway did not fail because the invention was unserious. The machine solved a difficult problem. The postmortem asks a more useful question: what has to be true around a product before technical possibility can become an ordinary habit?
