Esponda wins in Hartford; London form, Hangzhou next

Reese Esponda won the U.S. Classic all-around with 54.900, Rai Benjamin ran a 44.05 personal best to win the 400m in London, and ISSF World Cup Hangzhou opens the next Team USA watch window on July 20. The sources describe these as a domestic gymnastics qualifier, a Diamond League meet, a World Cup and a national championship; they do not identify a direct LA28 roster place from these meet results. The immediate selection consequence is gymnastics: Hartford was the last chance to qualify for the August U.S. Championships in Phoenix. 12

This briefing covers July 12–19, 2026, then points to the next seven days. The short version: gymnastics supplied the clearest domestic selection test, London supplied a dense track-and-field form check, and shooting now moves onto the international calendar with a USA Shooting roster explicitly framed as part of the build toward Los Angeles 2028.

Esponda, 17, won her first elite all-around title at the U.S. Classic in Hartford. Her 54.900 put her ahead of Jade Carey at 54.050 and Zoey Molomo at 53.900. Esponda also won floor exercise with 13.950. Carey won vault with 14.275, while Skye Blakely won the bars and beam titles with 14.100 and 14.250. 1

The more consequential result may belong to Katelyn Ohashi. The former UCLA star needed a combined 26.800 on beam and floor to qualify for the August national championships. She scored 13.200 on each, finishing 0.400 short. That closes this route to Phoenix, while the Olympics.com account says she plans to continue working toward 2027. 2

For LA28 tracking, Esponda and Carey leave Hartford with the strongest all-around evidence, while Ohashi's story shifts from an immediate 2026 national-team checkpoint to a longer rebuild. The U.S. Classic was a domestic qualifier for the August U.S. Championships, not a published LA28 selection meet. 3

The Novuna London Athletics Meet on July 18 produced several strong U.S. results in the 11th meeting of the 2026 Diamond League series. Benjamin won the men's 400m in a personal-best 44.05, with Jacory Patterson third in 44.25. Brandon Miller won the men's 800m in a personal-best 1:42.19. 4

Ja'Kobe Tharp won the 110m hurdles in a meeting-record 12.89, ahead of Trey Cunningham's 13.12. In the women's discus, Cierra Jackson moved from fourth to first with a Diamond League record of 71.72m, and Valarie Sion finished second at 68.39m. Gabby Thomas was second in the 200m in 21.81, behind Julien Alfred's 21.66 meeting record. Claire Bryant added a second-place finish in the long jump at 6.94m. 4

Those marks matter as performance evidence rather than Olympic qualification. Benjamin, Sion, Thomas and Tharp entered the meet with Olympic or world-champion credentials, but the London Diamond League result does not itself select the 2028 U.S. team. The next domestic championship window is the more direct selection story.

The next confirmed gymnastics checkpoint is outside this seven-day window: the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships are scheduled for August 6–9 in Phoenix. That is where the U.S. Classic qualifiers will meet the broader national field. 3

The cleanest way to follow this week is to separate three kinds of signal. Hartford answers who advanced to the next domestic gymnastics meet. London shows who is producing world-class marks in an open international field. Hangzhou tests a named USA Shooting national-team group against a full World Cup field while the federation continues building its LA28 selection system. None of those categories should be mistaken for a finalized Olympic ranking.

For a practical viewing order, start with the ISSF Hangzhou schedule on July 20, then watch the first finals from July 22 onward. Keep the USA Championships on the July 23–26 calendar as the next U.S.-based track checkpoint, and carry Esponda, Carey, Benjamin, Jackson, Tharp, Weisz and Tucker forward as the names whose next results will add the most useful context to the LA28 picture.
