The Cockroach Protest Fight

India's "Cockroach" youth movement got the resignation it demanded. The harder question is whether the exam system changes with it.

India's education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, resigned on July 25 after weeks of youth-led protests over alleged NEET exam leaks and testing failures. The Cockroach Janta Party then said the government had accepted its demands and withdrew its nationwide agitation. 12

The X argument now has two competing readings. Supporters see a rare accountability win: the movement's own statement lists compensation for families of students who died after the exam scandal, withdrawal of protest-related FIRs, and consideration of a five-point exam-reform charter. 3 Critics and cautious analysts say a ministerial exit does not prove that the exam system is fixed; the BBC reports that the movement's staying power and political meaning remain open questions. 1

The government frames the resignation as a commitment to young people and paper-leak reform. Amit Shah said on X that it reflected respect for youth sentiment, while Narendra Modi had already promised fast-track courts for paper-leak cases. 45

The movement began as an online meme in May, launched a nationwide campaign on June 11, faced a police crackdown during a July 20 Delhi march, and reached the resignation and withdrawal announcements on July 25. 9
