Kyiv barrage turns Patriot shortage into an X fight

A Russian missile-and-drone barrage on Kyiv killed at least 17 people, and the argument on X quickly became whether scarce Patriot interceptors should shape Ukraine's next move.

The attack ran for nearly nine hours overnight from August 19 into August 20, 2026. Ukraine said Russia launched dozens of cruise, ballistic and hypersonic missiles alongside 168 drones. Ukraine's air force said it downed nearly 90% of the drones and most of the cruise missiles. 1

Reuters and AP report that Ukraine regards Patriot interceptors as the only weapon in its arsenal capable of stopping the relevant ballistic missiles. Ukrainian officials said allied countries had not replenished the stocks. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said anti-ballistic capabilities were an urgent priority after the attack. 12
