The 22:00 UTC meme board: DR Congo broke Portugal, England-Croatia lost the plot, and everyone booed water
A late-window World Cup meme board: DR Congo's historic draw made Portugal a stat-card punchline, England-Croatia became chaos TV, and the one thing both fanbases could agree on was booing the hydration break.
The late window finally gave the timeline something with teeth: DR Congo took a 1-1 draw off Portugal for the country's first World Cup point, then England and Croatia spent two hours making scoreline whiplash look like a civic service 12. This board covers the noisy posts that landed after the previous 17:00 UTC scan, so it is deliberately less "whole day recap" and more "what the group chat sent after dinner."
The quick board
- Happiest clip: DR Congo supporters in Lisbon celebrating Yoane Wissa's goal, followed by Kinshasa footage after the country's first World Cup goal 34.
- Meanest stat: Portugal had 75% possession, 723 accurate passes and one shot on target in a 1-1 draw, which is basically a spreadsheet begging to be bullied 5.
- Best reaction face: Bruno Fernandes after a Cristiano Ronaldo miss became the easiest meme frame of the Portugal draw 6.
- Most chaotic match: England 4, Croatia 2. Kane scored twice, Baturina and Musa dragged Croatia level, Bellingham restored the lead, and Rashford closed it late 2.
- Least popular innovation: both England and Croatia fans booed when the referee stopped play for the first hydration break 7.
1. DR Congo turned Portugal's night into a street party
The wholesome slot belongs to DR Congo, but not in a soft-focus way. The Lisbon fan-zone clip had the exact mood of a small crowd realizing, all at once, that a group-stage goal can feel like a family wedding if the country has waited long enough 3. Kinshasa did the louder sequel after Wissa's goal was framed on r/soccer as DR Congo's first ever World Cup goal 4.

The comments leaned sentimental rather than snarky. One person wrote that they had lived in Kinshasa and immediately imagined friends dancing; another kept it plain: "That's what football is all about" 4. The internet can still do normal joy. Terrifying development.
2. Portugal produced the funniest possession chart in the building
The post title was already the joke: Portugal completed 700-plus passes for one shot on target 5. The screenshot made it worse. It showed Portugal with 75% possession, 723 accurate passes and seven total shots, while DR Congo had 25% possession, 197 accurate passes and two shots on target. The match still finished 1-1 5.

This is the dangerous zone where tactics chat and meme chat become the same conversation. In the thread, Spain jokes arrived immediately: "Just a west Spain," "Spain must be proud of them," and one dry killer, "sounds like a great team goal, post the clip" 5. If your stat card needs a punchline, the comments will provide one for free.
3. Ronaldo discourse got two fresh props: Bruno's face and the Messi chant
The Bruno clip did not need subtitles. r/soccer posted his reaction to Ronaldo's missed chance at 18:36 UTC, and it had already pulled more than 5,900 upvotes and 600 comments by this scan 6. The comment section did what it does: "It's so Ronaldover" arrived, then the usual retirement-courtroom arguments showed up behind it 6.

Then DR Congo fans went fully mischievous and chanted "MESSI! MESSI! MESSI!" in front of Cristiano Ronaldo 8. That post became the meaner little brother of the Bruno clip: fewer upvotes, sharper elbows, and just enough pettiness to keep the old rivalry furnace warm.
4. England-Croatia was the match-thread equivalent of a shaken soda can
England beat Croatia 4-2 in Arlington: Kane scored in the 12th and 42nd minutes, Croatia answered through Martin Baturina and Petar Musa, Jude Bellingham made it 3-2 right after halftime, and Marcus Rashford killed it at 85 minutes 2. That is already enough nonsense for one match. Then the internet got a triple save and a leapfrog.
Dominik Livakovic's 56th-minute triple save got its own clip and the inevitable "WC Livakovic has arrived" comment 9. Ivan Perisic's leapfrog celebration after a Croatia equalizer turned into the other reusable visual, with one commenter compressing the whole thing into "Airisic" 10.

This was the rare high-scoring match where even the side that lost produced half the memes. Very Croatia, honestly.
5. Everyone agreed on one thing: boo the hydration break
The England-Croatia match also supplied the day's cleanest stadium-sound joke. At 21:31 UTC, a clip hit r/soccer showing England and Croatia fans both booing when the referee blew for the first hydration break 7. Cross-border unity, but make it irritated.

The comments instantly treated it as an ad-break conspiracy factory. One fan wrote that their whole pub booed too; another complained that FIFA was taking heat for a host-country broadcast habit; a reply imagined the negotiation as "create an ad break and we'll give u xx%" 7. No one hates a new rule faster than a football crowd with momentum.
6. The tiny meme posts picked the headline for us
The dedicated meme subreddit did not bring huge comment volume in this late slot, but it did act like a headline lab. One r/footballmemes post simply called England-Croatia the "Best game of the World Cup so far," and another labeled the same late-window chaos "World Cup at It's peak" 1112. Not statistically huge, but spiritually correct.
The real story of the 22:00 board is that the internet had range: one historic DR Congo party, one Portugal passing-chart roasting, one Ronaldo reaction spiral, one properly stupid England-Croatia game, and one hydration break booed like it personally insulted everyone's ancestors. If the early boards were Messi courtroom drama, this one was pure group-stage slapstick.
