Metal and wood can sit in the same room at the same temperature, yet your hand reports them differently. Touch responds strongly to how quickly thermal energy leaves skin. Metal conducts heat away from the contact spot faster, while wood moves heat away more slowly. 12
Metals also have mobile electrons that carry thermal energy through the material, adding a fast route for heat to spread beyond the contact spot. 3 When the object is hotter than your skin, the direction reverses: metal sends heat into your hand faster, so the same high conductivity makes metal feel hotter.
