Wendigo: The Monster We Changed (2026)

The Wendigo is often drawn as an antlered snow demon. That image is relatively new, and it obscures an older cultural argument about hunger, reciprocity, and social breakdown.

This episode follows the Windigo through four stages: Algonquian cultural traditions; the early colonial paper trail; its transformation into English-language wilderness horror; and its continuing use in Indigenous art, scholarship, and political critique.

What the episode follows

The documentary record has two commonly cited early markers. Encyclopaedia Britannica treats a 1636 Jesuit report by Paul Le Jeune, about a related being called an atchen, as the earliest written mention. John Colombo’s encyclopedia entry instead identifies a 1722 printed form of the word, recorded by Bacqueville de la Potherie as Onaouientagos. These are different claims about the archive, not competing dates for the beginning of the tradition. 1 2

Robert A. Brightman’s 1988 article, The Windigo in the Material World, argues that the Windigo complex likely has a prehistoric inception and cannot be reduced to a simple response to famine. His account places Windigo cases within Algonquian ideas about dreaming, destiny, and culturally specific interpretations of suffering. 3

By the 1890s and early twentieth century, the figure had entered non-Indigenous literary markets. Algernon Blackwood’s 1910 novella, The Wendigo, placed a hunting party in the Canadian backcountry and helped establish the Windigo as a wilderness-horror figure for English-language readers. 4 5

Later popular culture often replaced the figure’s social and moral context with a familiar monster design. A 2020 essay by Kallie Nicole Hunchman compares Blackwood and Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, arguing that Western horror can strip the Windigo from its original context and leave behind a stereotype. 6

Why the present matters

The Windigo has not settled into one official civic mascot in the way some North American legends have. Its current public life is more dispersed. Norval Morrisseau’s Windigo, painted around 1964, is held by Glenbow in Calgary, whose New Sun Gallery presents works and objects from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities. 7

The figure also remains a language for critique. Encyclopaedia Britannica connects the Windigo to Winona LaDuke’s phrase “Wendigo economics,” which describes the extractive appetite of corporations. In 2026, Jenni Makahnouk’s The Indian Act as Wendigo used the figure to analyze how Canadian colonial law consumes Indigenous self-determination while presenting control as necessary. 8 9

The question the episode leaves behind is simple: when the antlers arrived, what disappeared? The answer is often the original warning about greed, community, and the relationships that make survival possible.
