Anthropic turns Claude Design into a design-to-code workflow with Claude Code handoff (2026)

What changed

Anthropic turned Claude Design into a broader design-to-code workflow on June 17, adding design-system imports, Claude Code synchronization, direct canvas editing, and exports into third-party work tools. The official Claude post says the product now "sticks to your design system across projects" and works "fluidly with Claude Code," with access through the Claude desktop sidebar or claude.ai/design. 1

The release is material because it moves Claude Design beyond a standalone beta surface. Anthropic says more than one million people used Claude Design in its first week, and that the updated product can bring in one or several design systems from a GitHub repo, design files, or raw uploads. 1

"Our goal remains the same as before: letting you explore more directions than a deadline usually allows and making the handoff to polish or build as seamless as possible." 1

How the product now works

The main integration is a round trip between Claude Design and Claude Code. Anthropic says users can run /design-sync to pull a design system into Claude Design, hand a finished design to Claude Code, or start in Claude Code with /design to create, edit, and sync a design project from the terminal. 2

For teams, the new controls are aimed at brand consistency. Anthropic's setup guide says Claude can extract reusable components, colors, typography, and patterns from codebases, slide decks, or other design references; the admin guide says Team and Enterprise admins can enable Claude Design in organization settings and control access through custom roles. 3 4

Availability is still beta. The help center says Claude Design is available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, with Enterprise access off by default; it also says Design now draws from the same usage pool as chat, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork rather than a separate weekly allowance. 2

Partner and competitive context

Anthropic also widened Claude Design's distribution path. The official post lists export or send-to integrations with Adobe, Base44, Canva, Gamma, Lovable, Miro, Replit, Vercel, and Wix, plus PDF and PowerPoint export. 1 CNET described the update as bringing Claude's design and coding modes together so users can move between visual work and implementation without repeated handoffs. 5

That makes the launch a workflow bet, not just a new UI tool. Anthropic is using Claude Code, third-party app connectors, and design-system governance to compete for the moment when a product idea turns into a usable prototype or production handoff.
