The Queue Is Full

The Social Security hold loop has a name, which is unusual. It is "Throw Yourself in Front of It," written by David D'Alessio and released in 2014. 1

The public record is less tidy about the institution around it. Reporting identifies the song on Social Security's phone line, but does not name the SSA employee or contractor who selected it, and does not document a formal changeover. The first trace of the song's life in the hold-music economy is around Thanksgiving 2017, when D'Alessio received a royalty check from Amazon Web Services. 2 That is a timeline, not a complete procurement history. The selector is still anonymous.

The sound is a strange fit for a retirement line. Callers have described an electronic tune that resets every five or ten seconds, then returns again and again while the system inserts its recorded messages. 3 D'Alessio's song is long enough to have a life outside the queue, but the telephone version turns it into a small bright object trapped in a glass box. It is catchy in the way a fluorescent light is persistent.

The population inside that box is an estimate, not an SSA headcount. The Washington Post reported 76.4 million calls from January through September 2025, while SSA later reported that its public average wait on the National 800 Number fell from 30 minutes in January to 7 minutes in September. 34 If those figures are treated as a steady flow, roughly 1,400 callers would be in the queue at once at the later seven-minute rate. Using the article's earlier 68.9-minute snapshot produces a much larger figure, around 13,600. Neither number is a live count. Both show the same thing: this is a population, not a metaphor.

This track does not sample D'Alessio's recording. It takes the public archetype instead: a short electronic cell, light electric piano, synthetic shimmer, and the calm persistence of a system that has no idea how long you have been waiting. The loop is allowed to widen into harmony, then narrow again until it sounds almost like an automated message you have not yet learned to hate.
