Bellingham books Messi semi-final

Four quarter-finals turned the football week into a heavyweight semi-final bracket: France vs Spain on July 14 in Arlington, then England vs Argentina on July 15 in Atlanta. 1 All four semi-finalists are former World Cup winners. 2 Al Jazeera reported that they are also the top four ranked teams in the world. 3

The club-game angle is just as clear. La Liga players took every quarter-final Player of the Match award: Kylian Mbappe for France, Lamine Yamal for Spain, Jude Bellingham for England, and Julian Alvarez for Argentina. 2456 For club-level readers, the week's practical football story now sits in two places: World Cup knockout form and the transfer market reacting around it.

France were the cleanest quarter-final winners. Kylian Mbappe missed a 28th-minute penalty against Morocco, then scored in the 60th minute and assisted Ousmane Dembele's 66th-minute goal in a 2-0 win at Boston Stadium. 7 Mbappe left the match in the 76th minute after an ankle issue, but he later said he had "a minor ankle injury" and was "completely fine." 7

Spain had the tighter route. Fabian Ruiz scored after Thibaut Courtois spilled a rebound, Charles De Ketelaere equalised before half-time, and Mikel Merino scored the 88th-minute winner 117 seconds after coming on. 8 Spain's run now reaches 36 matches unbeaten, and Luis de la Fuente has gone 13 major-tournament matches without defeat. 8

England's 2-1 extra-time win over Norway was the roughest performance of the four winners, but Jude Bellingham dragged the tie away from Erling Haaland. Andreas Schjelderup gave Norway the lead in the 36th minute, Bellingham equalised in first-half stoppage time, and Bellingham scored again in the 93rd minute after Orjan Nyland spilled Morgan Rogers' shot. 9 Thomas Tuchel said England "made life very, very difficult" and called the performance "sloppy," which is a fair description of a night England survived more than controlled. 9

Argentina also needed extra time. Alexis Mac Allister headed in Lionel Messi's corner, Dan Ndoye equalised for Switzerland, Breel Embolo was sent off in the 72nd minute, and Julian Alvarez put Argentina back ahead with a 112th-minute strike before Lautaro Martinez made it 3-1. 10 Argentina have now been taken to extra time in two of their three knockout matches. 10

Mbappe and Messi are tied at 8 goals, with Mbappe ahead on assists, while Haaland is out at 7 and Bellingham has surged to 6. 11 That makes France-Spain and England-Argentina more than semi-finals. They are also the next two turns in the tournament's scoring race.

The La Liga overlay is hard to miss. Mbappe and Bellingham are Real Madrid players, Yamal is Barcelona's teenage right-sided attacker, and Alvarez is Atletico Madrid's forward. Their quarter-final awards put Spain's domestic league at the centre of the week. 2456

There is also a tactical warning inside the player story. France's attack has two five-goal scorers in Mbappe and Dembele, while Spain have conceded just 1 goal in 5 World Cup matches. 45 England's question is different: Bellingham has solved two knockout ties, but Tuchel's own post-match comments made clear that England cannot keep asking him to rescue broken spells of possession. 9

France-Spain carries a political shadow after former Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy questioned the France squad's composition. The French Embassy in Spain replied that all 26 France players are French, with 23 born in France and the other 3 also French. 12 Pedro Sanchez, Spain's current prime minister, said Spain belongs to people who "love it and work for it" and not to those who bring shame with xenophobic statements. 13 Pau Cubarsi, the Barcelona and Spain U21 defender, added: "If they play for the French National Team, they are French. Their skin colour does not matter." 14

England-Argentina has taken the more familiar rivalry route. Reuters reported that Lionel Scaloni tried to cool the mood by saying, "It's a soccer match. Period. There's nothing more to it." 15 Rodrigo De Paul still invoked Diego Maradona, 1986, and the Malvinas/Falklands in an interview before the semi-final, while r/soccer's response became one of the week's most contentious threads. 16 Joe Cole then gave the internet the easy target by saying England would "put Messi to bed," which r/soccer users immediately treated as classic English pre-match overconfidence. 17

The two semi-finals now have different emotional temperatures. France-Spain is an elite football match carrying a racism argument around national identity. England-Argentina is a rivalry match trying, with mixed success, not to become only a rivalry match.

The transfer week mattered because several World Cup names are also Premier League or La Liga market stories. Alvarez scored Argentina's 112th-minute winner against Switzerland, and one day later the reporting around Arsenal, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid tightened. 1018 Johan Manzambi's World Cup also moved straight into club business, with Aston Villa beating Newcastle United for the Freiburg midfielder. 19

France-Spain is the cleaner football contest: Mbappe and Dembele against a Spain side that has lost neither a major-tournament match under De la Fuente nor any match since March 2023. 48 England-Argentina is the messier test: England have Bellingham in tournament-saving form, Argentina have Messi and Alvarez, and both teams have just spent 120 minutes getting through a quarter-final. 910

For clubs, the next pressure points are simpler. United need clarity on whether Santos becomes the midfield signing that Ederson did not. Arsenal need to know whether Alvarez is a real £90m lane or only leverage in a Barcelona-Atletico standoff. Villa have already shown the advantage of Champions League football in the Manzambi race. 182022
