Six result sets named their winners inside the September 20–27, 2026 Pacific-time window this issue covers. Hack the North closed at Waterloo, the HumanX Amsterdam pitch final picked a Dutch company, the AI Hack for Freedom III handed out three prizes in Washington, the MunichTech EXPO published its hackathon awards, InnoTrans ran its first rail hackathon in Berlin, and Bincom's GenAI hackathon named three teams in Nigeria. Four further events confirmed an outcome and published no team names; this issue holds them in a separate queue.
Look across the six and one kind of winner keeps turning up. Avendar sells investigation software to the Dutch National Police. The AI Hack for Freedom prizes went to tools built alongside human-rights activists. InnoTrans put its hackathon in front of rail operators. MunichTech's awards went to manufacturing, semiconductor and city builds. A scout screening this week is looking at teams aimed at institutional buyers, with the podiums as the weakest evidence any of them has.

Hack the North 2026: 24 winning projects, and the AI ones among them

Hack the North ran its 36-hour build at the University of Waterloo from September 18 to 20, drew 1,045 participants and put up 39 prizes. Judges scored originality, user experience, technical complexity and the live demo. 8
The organizer's gallery lists the winning projects first and flags each with a winner mark; its first page carries 24 of them. 1 The main finalist prize names 12 projects, and the gallery marks every prize winner the same way, so the 12 finalists cannot be separated from the sponsor-prize winners on that page.
The agent and infrastructure builds are the ones a scout can act on:
  • Reflex writes skills for AI agents, on the team's premise that people currently hand-write those skills themselves.
  • Signal runs multi-agent research that cites its sources and flags conflicts between them.
  • FinRet is a finance research harness that returns auditable, citation-backed answers.
  • Dealify is an AI shopkeeper for Shopify that negotiates inside merchant-set pricing rules and tests those rules against 300 synthetic shoppers before a merchant adopts them.
  • Composition is a physical harness for agentic video creation.
  • TakeOne is a robotic film studio: describe a shot, and the system plans and simulates it, moves the camera and lighting, then helps edit the result.
  • Bloxify adds an agentic sales and analytics layer to selling with Shopify inside Roblox.
  • Keymaeleon is a mechanical keyboard whose OLED keys adapt to the task and use AI to surface the likely next action.
  • Orbis Engine turns existing footage into 4D.
  • Combadge is a wearable voice and vision communicator.
The rest of the flagged list runs from the practical to the deliberately odd: MedBot turns viral health claims into evidence-backed summaries, Snitch flags suspicious moments in remote interviews by combining behavioural signals with AI-text detection, Sham scores an online store's risk from signals across Reddit and Instagram, CADEX lets someone build a physical part without CAD experience, ARDB is an augmented-reality debugger for embedded systems, Settlers of Solana simulates a market economy with a swarm of agents, and the playful end of the list includes Concerto, bingbong, Bricked, punching-face, Granny Waymo, Aircade, EyeMelody and SpideyIRL. 1

HumanX Amsterdam: a police-data startup takes the pitch final

HumanX ran its European summit from September 22 to 24 at RAI Amsterdam. The pitch competition took 25 pre-vetted teams, put them through three semi-final sessions and two wildcard slots on September 23, and sent its finalists to the Cube Stage on September 24. The first prize is an acceleration package built to carry a European company into US enterprise and venture channels, and the runners-up get the tools for growth capital and enterprise procurement on both sides of the Atlantic. 9
Winner: Avendar. HumanX named Avendar and co-founder Marijn van Aerle as the winner of the competition. 2 Avendar is an Eindhoven GovTech company whose software turns fragmented public data into investigative leads. It raised a €2.2 million seed round in May, led by LUMO Labs and the Brabant Development Agency, and its platform is deployed with the Dutch National Police and the Municipality of Amsterdam; the use cases include criminal investigations and Bibob screening, the Dutch administrative check that keeps licences and subsidies out of organised crime. 10
The companies that pitched alongside Avendar are worth naming, because several will appear again in European AI rounds. The first semi-final group was Bosun, AIRA Systems, Frayme, Lettria, PlayablesAI and Earthian AI; the second was GreenCompute, Avatia AI, In Parallel, Socialtrait, Fynex AI and Twinshape; the third was LangWatch, 8wave, Avendar, Hola AI, Weeve and Methodino. 111213 The organizer named the overall winner and published no second or third place.

AI Hack for Freedom III: three activist-led tools and $36,000

The National Endowment for Democracy hosted the third edition at its Washington headquarters on September 24–25, with the Human Rights Foundation, the AI Freedom Lab at Bitcoin Park and the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy. Ten pro-democracy activists from Colombia, Kenya, Nepal, North Macedonia, Rwanda, Tibet, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe each led a team of developers and designers, working with the technology firm Finite. 3
  • First prize, $20,000 in cryptocurrency — Carine Kanimba of Rwanda, secretary general of World Liberty Congress, for Behind the Jersey, a platform that helps sports fans identify authoritarian entities funding their teams and campaign for change.
  • Second prize, $10,000 — Kadir Yağız Çetin of Turkey, founder and CEO of CDR, for an offline learning platform that gives Afghan women and girls barred from school access to educational material without an internet connection.
  • Third prize, $6,000 — Chemi Lhamo, a Tibetan-Canadian human rights activist, for an application that preserves evidence of harassment even when a phone is stolen or damaged, together with a dashboard for identifying potential threats.
The remaining seven participants each took home $2,000. Judges came from Microsoft, the University of Maryland, the U.S. State Department, Atlas Network, the Anti-Corruption Foundation and China Human Rights Defenders. 3

MunichTech EXPO: applied AI takes two of the five Grand Challenge awards

MunichTech EXPO ran a Europe-focused hackathon from September 1 to 20 with 161 participants on the Devpost side, and announced five Grand Challenge awards on September 26. 414
  • Grand Challenge — AI Action Path Assurance, by HAIEC. Deterministic, source-backed assurance of what an AI agent can reach and cause — capability, authority, controls and evidence — on a real multi-tenant AI SaaS.
  • Applied AI — Reqfold, by Lattice Works. Turns messy manufacturing RFQs and supplier quotes into a traceable requirement matrix, with the AI interpreting and code checking before a person decides.
  • Industry & Enterprise — Physics-Aware SEM Localization, by DriftSense. Localises semiconductor inspection patterns using persistent line-edge roughness as a physical fingerprint, in cases where conventional template matching fails.
  • Sustainability & Societal Impact — AGRINEXO AGA, by ETAPA RACIONAL. An agroecology geospatial agent covering fields, NDVI, climate and water balance, with multi-LLM assistance for farm decisions.
  • Student / Early Talent — AgentCrashLab. A crash-testing lab for AI agents: adversarial tests, failure DNA, mutation testing and version comparison before production.
The expo published a separate ranked board for projects submitted through its own portal. FlexGrid took first place in Mobility & Automotive, treating EV charging as dispatchable grid flexibility; Reqfold was second and AGRINEXO AGA third. Track winners on the same board were SignalFlow (Smart Cities), The Triage Tribe with an AI-powered clinical triage assistant (Digital Health), FlowSense AI with adaptive traffic-signal control (Smart Cities) and ResearchBridge (Education Technology). 5
The awards themselves are recognition — an on-stage ceremony, a showcase slot and introductions to industry partners and investors — and carry no cash. 4

InnoTrans "AI on Track": three solutions, no team names

InnoTrans held its first AI hackathon from September 23 to 25 at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, inside the transport-technology trade fair, with Alstom, Wabtec and Siemens Mobility as main sponsors and a field of roughly 60 to 80 developers, startups and industry experts. A jury of industry experts awarded prize money of up to €5,000 on the final day. 615
The organizer named three of the winning solutions: ATMOS, a concept for smart control of on-board air conditioning; NextMove, AI timetable optimisation that lets an operator respond fast to an incident; and Trackline, an intelligent voice assistant for ticket booking. A Wabtec challenge winner was awarded as well. The release names no team, founder or company behind any of the three, which leaves the podium as a set of concepts. 6

Bincom's GenAI hackathon: three teams, no builds published

Bincom Dev Center, a Nigerian software development and training firm, ran its September hackathon under the banner Hacking GenAI 6.0 on September 18–19. Team Pathfinder took first place, Team Civic Shield second and Team Stackdevs third. The organizer says teams were judged on the strength and originality of their idea, whether the solution worked, scalability, clarity, relevance to generative AI, and teamwork. No project title, description or demo link was published with the result. 7

Result announced, roster unresolved

HackGT 13 (Georgia Tech)

HackGT 13 ran 36 hours at the Klaus Advanced Computing Building from September 25 to 27 with 821 participants, $11,000 in cash and track prizes sponsored by Aramco, Impiricus, NSA, Meta, Visa and SpaceXAI, among others. The results were due on the closing day and the organizer's page still reads that winners are announced soon. 16

Insta360 Bold Maker Intelligent Imaging Challenge (Nanjing)

Insta360 held the awards for its first intelligent-imaging hackathon on September 24 in Nanjing's Qixia district, across three tracks: AI plus public good, AI plus image content creation, and AI plus imaging product development. More than 220 creators entered and 15 teams reached the final. The organizer published no team name, project title or product. 17

Asia-Pacific Global Health Innovation Hackathon (SingHealth Duke-NUS)

The second edition of this maternal and child nutrition hackathon closed in Singapore on September 18–19 and announced its three winning teams on September 22, drawn from Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand. Team names and project descriptions are the missing field. 18

AI Infra Summit Hackathon (Kisaco Research and lablab.ai)

Carried forward from the last issue: the awards ceremony streamed from Santa Clara in September, and the organizer's dashboard for the event still shows no ranked winner list after submissions closed on September 17. 19

September 28–October 15 watchpoints

  • XPRIZE Build with Gemini, winners imminent. The 90-day competition closed on September 25 with 26,435 participants and $2,000,000 in prizes, of which $500,000 goes to first place. Entrants had to run a real business on AI agents with real revenue, and the roster is unpublished. 20
  • Blackbaud Social Good Startup Program, October 1. Public voting on the 2026 cohort closes on September 30, and both the Judges' Choice and the People's Choice winners are announced at bbcon 2026 on October 1. 21
  • Composable AI Hackathon, closes September 28. A five-day virtual sprint across Bloomreach, Google Cloud, Shopify and Databricks, with six tracks and live sandboxes. 22
  • LibTV at the Pingyao International Film Festival, September 28–30. Forty teams and 132 creators, chosen from 2,158 applicants and 1,253 teams, build an AI short film in 36 hours at the Pingyao film palace; Seedance supplies the models and Jia Zhangke appears as a guest. 23
  • SK hynix AI Hackathon 2026, registration closes September 28. A 100 million won prize pool, two online qualifiers and a final in Seoul on November 11 at COEX. Finalists receive an AI capability certificate and a fast track past CV screening in future applications. 24
  • All-Japan AI Hackathon 2026. The revival round ran on September 26, and 20 teams advance to the final on November 7 in Shibuya. 25
  • Nebius × NVIDIA Global AI Hackathon, deadline October 30. More than $50,000 in prizes with a $20,000 grand prize; entries must run on Nebius infrastructure and use at least one NVIDIA open-source model. 26
  • DevNetwork API + Cloud + AI Hackathon. The winner announcement still points readers at the general project gallery instead of a ranked table, roughly three weeks after it went up. 27
  • TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, October 13–15. The Startup Battlefield 200 pitch at Moscone West for $100,000 equity-free, and TechCrunch added a further five investor judges on September 21. 2829
  • HackGT 13 winners. The organizer's Devpost page is where the results appear. 16

Scout priorities

  1. Put Avendar first and change the usual question. The company already carries a €2.2 million seed round and two public-sector deployments, so what a scout needs is contract value, renewal terms and how much of the investigation workflow the platform actually replaces. 210
  2. Screen five Hack the North winners on whether anyone outside the event would use them. Signal, FinRet, Dealify, Composition and TakeOne each assume an operator who is not a judge: a researcher checking citations, a merchant setting pricing rules, a filmmaker moving a camera. Ask for the demo video and the repository. 1
  3. Treat the three AI Hack for Freedom winners as civic tools and ask who maintains them. Each was built in two days by one activist and a volunteer team, and two of the three answer conditions that hold only in a specific country. The question that decides anything is which organisation commits to running the tool after the prize money is spent. 3
  4. Work MunichTech's two enterprise awards forward to a design partner. HAIEC sells assurance over what an agent can reach and change, and DriftSense sells inspection to semiconductor fabs; both name a buyer's problem precisely enough to test. Ask each team which company has agreed to pilot. 4
  5. Hold the unresolved five as watch items, and go through InnoTrans's sponsors to reach its winners. Alstom, Wabtec and Siemens Mobility set the rail challenges, so they know who built ATMOS, NextMove and Trackline before any roster appears; HackGT 13, the Insta360 challenge, the Singapore health hackathon and the AI Infra Summit are each cheap to re-check on their own pages. 616171819
