Chicago's Trials chase, the Shanghai Masters and Cairo's shooting test: Team USA watch, Oct. 5–11

Olympic Qualifier & World Championship Schedule
Olympic Qualifier & World Championship Schedule@NeoDrop Official
This issue covers Oct. 5–11, 2026. Chicago owns the weekend: the Bank of America Chicago Marathon runs for the 48th time on Sunday with a record field of more than 55,000, and it counts as a qualifying race for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon. 1234
Shanghai opens the Rolex Shanghai Masters, an ATP Masters 1000 event that carries six seeded American men and finishes on Sunday, Oct. 18. 567 Tashkent takes the second stop of swimming's World Cup, Cairo opens the rifle and pistol World Cup, Chongli brings the BMX Racing World Cup, and Gdańsk closes the individual season of figure skating's Junior Grand Prix. 891011 The track cycling and artistic gymnastics world championships both arrive next week. 1213
The sorting that matters for planning is simple. Chicago is the week's one race that can put an American directly into a selection event. Shanghai and Chongli pay points in their sports' season standings. Tashkent and Cairo are form checks ahead of bigger championships. Gdańsk is junior development.

What changed since last week

Montréal closed with an American world title. Brandon McNulty won the men's elite road race in 6:17:04, attacking with 32 kilometres left and holding his lead over a chase group that kept hesitating. Michael Matthews finished second and Mathieu van der Poel third, with Quinn Simmons fourth and Matteo Jorgenson eighth. 14 The last American man to wear the road race rainbow jersey was Lance Armstrong in 1993. Demi Vollering of the Netherlands won the women's elite road race, Remco Evenepoel took a fourth consecutive men's elite time trial title, and Marlen Reusser retained the women's elite time trial title. 15
Berlin tightened the marathon picture. Tigst Assefa won the women's race in a personal-best 2:11:04, closing on the world record before an injury in the final kilometres slowed her, and Guye Adola won the men's race. 16
Team Europe took the Laver Cup. Alexander Zverev beat Learner Tien in the deciding match at The O2 in London to give Europe a 13–5 win over Team World. 17

The LA28 read

Chicago is the week's direct route into a selection event. USATF will pick the 2028 Olympic marathon team at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in St. Louis on March 25, 2028, and the first three men and the first three women across the line there go to Los Angeles. The qualifying window opened on Sept. 1, 2025, and a marathon of 2:16:00 or faster for men or 2:37:00 or faster for women buys a place on the Trials start line. 418 Several Americans in Sunday's field already own times inside that standard, and the rest are chasing it. Hicks brings the fastest American mark in the field, 2:04:35 from Boston this year. 2
Shanghai feeds the standings tennis draws its Olympic field from. The ATP rankings supply most of the Olympic singles places, with a ceiling of four men per country. 19 Six seeded Americans in one Masters 1000 draw is the deepest American presence of the autumn hard-court swing, and every round they win moves the standings that decide those places. 7
Tashkent is preparation. The World Cup is raced in 25-metre pools, and the tour exists as the lead-in to the World Short Course Championships in Beijing on Dec. 1–6. 8
Cairo is the last rehearsal. Shooting's first LA28 quota places go on the line at the World Championships in Doha later this season. The ISSF calls Cairo the rifle and pistol field's final competition before Doha, a chance to test equipment and check form under match conditions. 9
Chongli is a standings fight. Wood trails Brink by 76 points going into the two Chinese rounds, with Sarasota's two rounds left after that. 1024
Gdańsk is development. The Junior Grand Prix is a points series, and the top six in each discipline reach the junior Final in Chongqing on Dec. 10–13. 26
Next week brings two world championships: track cycling in Shanghai from Oct. 14 to 18, with 22 titles including the six Olympic events, and artistic gymnastics in Rotterdam from Oct. 17 to 25. 1213
