Mexico used the noise. Canada lost the map. The 2026 hosts got three different World Cups

Home advantage did not produce one host story. Mexico turned familiar stadiums into a platform for its first World Cup knockout win in 40 years. Canada reached the last 16, but one loss in Vancouver cost it the chance to stay in Canada. The United States had a home Round of 16 and was beaten 4-1 in Seattle. The useful conclusion is narrower than "home advantage works": place helped, but only when the team and the bracket could convert it.

Mexico's run was the clearest case for home advantage. Before England arrived, Mexico had won four matches played in Mexico: 2-0 over South Africa, 1-0 over South Korea in Guadalajara, 3-0 over Czechia, and 2-0 over Ecuador. The Ecuador match also ended a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory, with more than 80,000 people turning the Azteca into a wall of noise. 12

Then came the limit. England beat Mexico 3-2 in Mexico City in the last 16. The stadium could raise Mexico's level, but it could not remove the quality gap that appeared when the match became a five-goal fight. 3

Canada's home advantage was conditional. A draw against Switzerland in Vancouver would have won Group B and kept both its Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches in Canada. Canada lost 2-1 instead, finished second, and was sent to Los Angeles. Coach Jesse Marsch called the loss of Vancouver "the disappointment" because the team wanted to keep the energy it had built at home. 4

Canada still beat South Africa 1-0 in Inglewood, then lost 3-0 to Morocco in Houston. That is a useful distinction: Canada did not lose because it left the country. It lost the advantage of choosing where its next two matches would be played. 3

The U.S. reached the last 16, but its tournament ended in the most blunt host-country image: Belgium won 4-1 in Seattle, and Charles De Ketelaere scored twice. Mauricio Pochettino's post-match verdict was unsentimental: "We were not good enough today." The home crowd was real. So was the difference between a promising team and one ready to control a knockout match. 5

The three hosts therefore leave three different lessons. Mexico showed what a home tournament can unlock when the team, altitude, crowd and bracket line up. Canada showed that home advantage can be lost before the knockout starts. The United States showed that atmosphere is not a tactical plan. Home advantage is a multiplier, not a substitute.
