Starred repos weekly — Oct 12–18, 2026: React and Next.js ship critical RCE patches, Rust fixes a miscompilation

A five-repo scan for October 12–18: React and Next.js each patch a critical remote-code-execution flaw on October 14, Rust ships 1.99.1 for an FFI miscompilation, VS Code 1.142 changes how managed chats run, and Tailwind CSS lands 21 commits with no release.

What's New in the Repos I Starred
What's New in the Repos I Starred@NeoDrop Official
The completed week was October 12 – 18, 2026. Four of the five tracked repositories published a stable release, and two of those releases exist because a Critical remote-code-execution flaw had been reported in the code they ship.
React published 19.3.1 at 17:06 UTC on October 14 1. Next.js published 16.4.1 at 17:47 the same afternoon 2. Both close advisories rated Critical.
Rust published 1.99.1 on October 16 for a compiler miscompilation. VS Code published 1.142.0 on the same day as the two security releases. Tailwind CSS published nothing and landed 21 commits.
Comment counts below are the total comments on each open issue or pull request in this snapshot. A thread that opened years ago carries a large number whether or not anyone touched it this week.

Next.js

vercel/next.js published 16.4.1 on October 14 as a security release covering three advisories 2. The 15.x line got its own patch in the same minute: 15.5.28 3.
Two of the three are Critical. GHSA-673q-mjm6-r5xr describes unauthenticated remote code execution in use cache functions that return typed arrays 4. The affected range is >=16.0.0 through 16.4.0, and 16.4.1 is the only patched version 4.
Read the advisory's own framing before deciding it does not apply. It says the flaw needs an App Router application with Cache Components enabled and a use cache function returning multiple typed arrays. It then says there is no known workaround, and to upgrade immediately even if your application has no such functions 4.
GHSA-2464-fhr4-w9xw is the second Critical. A memory flaw in an upstream library used for Image Optimization reaches remote code execution when SVG files are used, and it needs a glibc-based Linux host 5. It affects >=10.0.0 through 15.5.27 and 16.0.0 through 16.4.0, so both patched lines carry the fix.
A deployment on musl — Alpine is the common one — is outside this advisory on platform grounds. If yours is glibc and serves SVG through Image Optimization, this is the one that decides your morning. The advisory names a second route for readers who cannot move Next.js itself: make sure the sharp your application resolves is at least 0.35.5 5.
The third, GHSA-p3m5-59mp-jv5r, is rated High. Crafted requests against an App Router application with at least one Server Action can hold a process at high CPU and block every other request that process serves 6. The affected range runs from 13.0.0 through 15.5.27 and from 16.0.0 through 16.4.0; an application on the Pages Router, or one with no Server Actions, is outside it.
Then 16.4.2 arrived on October 15 with no security content: eight backports pulled from an lts-active branch 7. They fix turbo-tasks snapshot consistency, Turbopack module-graph chaining on the Pages Router, two garbage-collection paths that left half-torn-down dependency edges, and lazy dynamic-import chunk-list collisions, among smaller items 7. Canary publishing ran from v16.5.0-canary.9 on October 12 to v16.5.0-canary.17 on October 17 89.
The standing comment leaders stayed put: #49279 with 143 comments, quiet since September 6, and #64921 with 109, last touched October 9 1011. What moved inside the window is smaller. #69865 reached 29 comments on October 17 over bundles that include every client component once one is rendered from a server component 12, and #81763 reached 17 the same day over Turbopack dropping Tailwind and DaisyUI styles 13.
  • Why included now: 16.4.1 is an out-of-band security release with two Critical advisories behind it, and 15.5.28 patches the 15.x line for one of them.
  • Upgrade call — Yes: To 16.4.1 or later on the 16.x line, and to 15.5.28 on 15.x. 16.4.2 builds on the security release, so taking it costs nothing extra.

VS Code

microsoft/vscode published 1.142.0 on October 14 1415. Two patch builds appeared just before it: 1.141.1 on October 13 and 1.141.2 on October 14 14.
Canvases are the headline feature and they are in preview. A canvas is a panel beside the chat where you and the agent edit the same artifact — a Kanban board for planning work, for instance — instead of trading prompts about it 15. chat.canvases.enabled turns them on, for local sessions on the Copilot harness in the desktop app 15.
Chats can move now. From the Agents window you can ask the agent to continue the current chat in another folder or in a new Git worktree with its history intact, and the edits run in the new location while your checkout stays as it was 15. The move works for Codex sessions holding one chat and one local folder 15.
The Markdown editor got a real overhaul. Source lines render one per visual line, you can paste an image straight into the file, Rename Symbol (F2) renames file links in place, and the Outline view and breadcrumbs now work on Markdown 15.
The change that can surprise a reader sits under Enterprise. If your organization sets a nonempty permissions object or sets sandbox.enabled to true, VS Code now requires the Copilot harness in Agent Host for full chat sessions, because that is the only place the policy can be enforced 15.
Opening an existing Local chat then moves it to Copilot automatically, keeping the transcript and any unsent draft, and archives the original only once the new chat opens successfully 15. While those policies apply, Claude, Codex, and terminal chat are unavailable; editor inline chat stays for limited read and edit work 15.
An administrator who needs more time can set vscode.temporaryDefaultToLocalHarness to true in managed settings, which keeps Local available and stops the automatic switch 15. The same page notes that this opt-out also overrides routing required by managed sandbox and permission settings.
Two smaller items touch setup. Windows sandboxing for the Local harness is deprecated, and sandboxed commands on Windows now need an Agent Host session 15. The model picker was rebuilt with a tab for Copilot models and another for BYOK models, showing thinking level and context size in a hover panel 15.
The comment leaders did not move: #519 with 604 comments, #3130 with 453, #40239 with 437, and #253136 with 411 1617. Inside the window, #4490, "Macro recording" reached 279 comments on October 16 and #33752, on positioning the IntelliSense parameter info reached 197 the same day 1819.
  • Why included now: 1.142.0 is a new minor, and its enterprise policy enforcement can move an existing chat to a different harness the first time you open it.
  • Upgrade call — Conditional: Take it for canvases or for moving chats between worktrees. If your organization manages agent permissions or sandboxing, check after updating which harness your chats run on, and whether Claude or Codex sessions still start.

React

react/react, the canonical public repository behind the facebook/react whitelist entry, published four releases on October 14: 19.3.1, 19.2.9, 19.1.10, and 19.0.9 1. Each release note carries a single line — "Improve transport protocol" — and mentions no security issue 1.
The advisories were published the same day. GHSA-xqc2-xf4c-x3h3 is Critical: unauthenticated remote code execution in React Server Components 20. It sits in react-server-dom-webpack, react-server-dom-parcel, and react-server-dom-turbopack — the packages that serialise server components onto the wire — across every 19.x line below the four patched versions 20.
The advisory narrows the case itself. It needs a response that transports multiple typed arrays together with an attacker-controlled value, which it calls an extremely rare arrangement 20. It recommends updating immediately regardless. An application whose React code has no server is outside it, and so is one with no framework, bundler, or bundler plugin supporting Server Components 20.
GHSA-h3gv-c5rc-p453 is High: crafted HTTP requests to server function endpoints can exhaust memory or CPU 21. Its affected ranges stop one release earlier than the Critical's — 19.0.0 through 19.0.7, 19.1.0 through 19.1.8, 19.2.0 through 19.2.7 — and the same four versions patch it 21.
If you run a framework that vendors React Server Components, the framework's own patch is the one to install. Next.js shipped 16.4.1 forty minutes after React published 19.3.1 2. A client-only React application has nothing here to install beyond keeping up with its line.
Ten commits landed on main during the window. PR #37852 reverted a sync-abort replay restoration that had landed the same day, pending a complete fix 22, and PR #37850 fixed overlapping replay slots after a prerender abort 23.
The comment leaders are unchanged: #13991 with 515 comments, last touched July 10, and #11347 with 286, last moved in 2024 2425. No thread above 100 comments gained a comment inside the window. The busiest new activity was #37620, a Suspense fallback remounting on hydration after use(browser()) with a client use(promise), at 11 comments on October 18 26.
  • Why included now: Four patch releases and two advisories, one of them Critical.
  • Upgrade call — Yes: To 19.3.1, or to whichever of 19.2.9, 19.1.10, or 19.0.9 matches your line, if you use React Server Components through any bundler plugin.

Rust

rust-lang/rust published 1.99.1 on October 16, a point release on the 1.99 line 27. It carries three fixes.
The one to read is the compiler fix: miscompiled FFI bool return values on x86_64 28. A function declared to return bool across the C boundary could come back with the wrong answer, which is a wrong branch in a running binary rather than a diagnostic.
The other two are narrower. A missing wcslen symbol on UEFI and embedded targets 29, and rust-lld needing the libLLVM rpath on macOS 30.
Merge activity toward the next stable is broad and none of it is released. PR #163611 adds core::process::resumable_breakpoint. PR #164518 syncs the stdarch intrinsics. Both merged October 18.
The comment leaders are where they were. PR #112049, "[do not merge] CI experiments" holds 2,459 comments and last moved October 7, before the window opened 31. Inside it, PR #133502 moved to 514 comments on October 15 and PR #132553, on making Rc<T>::deref and Arc<T>::deref zero-cost reached 186 on October 17 3233.
  • Why included now: 1.99.1 fixes a miscompilation, which changes what a binary does rather than what the compiler reports.
  • Upgrade call — Yes: If your toolchain is on 1.99.0, take 1.99.1. A wrong bool across an FFI boundary can pass a test suite that never exercises the C call.

Tailwind CSS

tailwindlabs/tailwindcss published no release. v4.3.3 from July 16 is still the newest stable, and npm's latest tag still points at it 34.
The window holds 21 commits on main instead, and nearly all of them harden the candidate canonicaliser. Canonicalisation is the step that decides two candidate classes mean the same thing and keeps one of them.
Three commits change how aggressively it collapses. PR #20558 stops exponential collapse when a utility sets many properties 35. PR #20540 prefers an existing candidate when it collapses utilities 36. PR #20574 stops it folding utilities into another utility that uses different theme variables 37.
Parsing got stricter. PR #20577 rejects arbitrary values with unbalanced parentheses or brackets 38, and PR #20575 drops nested rules that put a combinator after a pseudo-element 39. A Pug fix stops unbalanced brackets in text from leaking into the next line 40.
The scanner also learned units it had been missing: viewport and font-relative lengths now resolve where they previously did not 41.
A release is staged. PR #20447, titled "4.3.4", has been open since August 31 and was last touched on October 13 42. It is the branch a stable gets cut from, and nothing has been tagged from it.
Discussion here is thin: five open issues or pull requests were updated inside the window at all. The standing leaders hold — #17958 with 38 comments on the missing lightningcss.linux-x64-musl.node, #15005 with 33 on @property inside shadow roots, and #17246 with 27 on --watch pinning two cores 434445.
  • Why included now: Twenty-one commits landed with nothing published, and they are all heading into whatever 4.3.4 becomes.
  • Upgrade call — Hold: v4.3.3 remains the newest stable. If you are hitting a canonicalisation bug, the fix is on main and not in a release.
