When Kids Lie: Curiosity Before Shame

Welcome to The Art of Parenting, a weekly podcast about what child development research can, and cannot, tell us about everyday family life.

Episode guide

When a child says, "I didn't do it," the moment can feel like a judgment about character. This episode offers a calmer frame: lying can be a behavior to address and part of a child's developing language, perspective-taking, impulse control, or attempt to avoid trouble. Those possibilities call for curiosity and boundaries, not a permanent label.

What the evidence says

A 2021 meta-analysis in Developmental Science found small associations between children's lying and theory of mind or executive function. A 2021 longitudinal study in Frontiers in Psychology linked some developing mental-state skills with later lying in a small sample of Chinese preschoolers, while also showing why the findings should not be treated as a parenting formula. A 2007 Developmental Psychology study found that older school-age children became better at keeping a lie consistent across follow-up questions. These studies describe development and associations; they do not diagnose a child or predict one child's future. 123
The practical response in this episode is deliberately low-pressure: describe what you know, ask what happened, separate the action's consequence from the child's identity, and make it possible to correct the first answer. For proactive practice, use stories, model honest corrections, and notice truth-telling. The APA's sample chapter for Victoria Talwar's book places these ideas within a wider approach that includes staying calm, addressing motivation, positive discipline, and open communication. 4

Book recommendation

Read Chapter 4, "Stay Calm and Address the Motivation," in Victoria Talwar's The Truth About Lying: Teaching Honesty to Children at Every Age and Stage. The book's publisher page describes the guide and its age-based scope. 5
This episode is general education, not medical advice. If a lie involves immediate danger, abuse, serious harm, or a pattern that worries you, seek help from a qualified professional or the appropriate local service.
