New Releases Radar: October 9–16, 2026

Spotify / Apple Music New Album Releases
Spotify / Apple Music New Album Releases@NeoDrop Official
Fontaines D.C. take the week. Dopamine Chamber is NPR's first pick, Radio Milwaukee's lead, and the busiest indie release thread of the day at 821 upvotes and 175 comments; Pitchfork reviewed it on October 15. 1234
The Avalanches return after six years, Sophia Stel gives A24 Music its first debut album, and Rap is heavier than last week: Gucci Mane, Lucky Daye, a deluxe Tierra Whack, and a new A$AP Rocky single. 15
What can be checked on release morning is editorial picks, published reviews, release-day threads, and the playlists each record has landed on. First-week streaming totals and chart debuts arrive on their own weekly cycle, after this column is written, so no positions appear below. Spotify's New Music Friday playlist is cited where it applies. 6

Fontaines D.C. — Dopamine Chamber

  • Artist: Fontaines D.C.
  • Album: Dopamine Chamber
  • Label: XL Recordings
  • Genre: Stadium rock, art rock
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 14
  • Signal: NPR's first pick of the week, Radio Milwaukee's lead, and a Pitchfork review on October 15. Its r/indieheads release thread drew 821 upvotes and 175 comments by Friday morning, the busiest of the day. 134
  • Listening route: Apple Music · Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: The Dublin band's fifth album runs 11 songs in 43 minutes and gets its title from the record's own refrain: the only place left to feel better is the "Dopamine chamber." Grian Chatten said much of the writing came from time in Venice. It holds the band's first ever collaboration, "Where Is Gone?," with Rosalía. Pitchfork's Shaad D'Souza calls it "cruel, beautiful feel-bad music"; The Guardian calls it "gloomy, gorgeous and a gargantuan triumph." 41415
  • First listen: "Six Shot Morning." It opens the record with a brooding bassline and shooting synths, and it is where Apple Music's notes say the album's mood gets set. 14
Pick Dopamine Chamber if you have forty-three minutes and want the record with the most weight behind it this week.

@ — Autosmile

  • Artist: @
  • Album: Autosmile
  • Label: 4AD
  • Genre: Psychedelic folk, art pop
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 16
  • Signal: NPR's second pick of the week, and a Mod Pick release thread on r/indieheads at 116 upvotes. 117
  • Listening route: Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: Victoria Rose and Stone Filipczak are the Philadelphia duo behind @, and this is their first album for 4AD after the debut Mind Palace Music. The songwriting method has not changed: the two work separately and finish each other's compositions. Eleven songs, recorded mostly at home with friends adding cello, violin and drums. 16
  • First listen: "I Know You Are (But What Am I Thinking)." The band's own notes call it the nostalgic earworm, and it is the shortest route into the harmonies the record is built on. 16
Pick Autosmile if you want dense vocal harmony and you do not need the record to be loud.

Sophia Stel — the greatest album of all time

  • Artist: Sophia Stel
  • Album: the greatest album of all time
  • Label: A24 Music
  • Genre: Electropop
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 18
  • Signal: Stereogum made it Album of the Week on October 13, and NPR placed it third. The title is deliberately too big, and the Guardian interview that produced it ran the same week. 1719
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: The 27-year-old Vancouver artist's debut runs 12 songs in 46 minutes and is almost entirely self-produced. She came up through two EPs and a TikTok hit, recorded the second EP in the basement of the Vancouver club where she worked, and got there by signing to A24's label; Lorde asked her to support her live. The Guardian reports she grew up as one of 11 in an ultra-religious family, keeps her circle small, and still models between records to stay solvent. 718
  • First listen: "Now I've Got a Lot You Know." Apple Music names it the album's best track, and it has a video, so you can see the register before you commit. 18
Pick the greatest album of all time if you want the week's least predictable pop record from an artist with nothing to protect.

June McDoom — Follow the Light

  • Artist: June McDoom
  • Album: Follow the Light
  • Label: Jagjaguwar
  • Genre: Folk, dub-inflected soul
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 20
  • Signal: NPR's fourth pick, and a Radio Milwaukee lead pick. 12
  • Listening route: Bandcamp · Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Her debut full-length, 12 songs, made with her partner Evan Wright, who plays most of the instruments. McDoom grew up in a Jamaican household in South Florida where her father built his own speakers and ran three sound systems; her grandfather played banjo and guitar in mento, the Jamaican acoustic folk that predates ska and dub, and it was he who put a guitar in her hands. Live drums were cut with Victor Axelrod, the producer known as Ticklah, and the rest was built at home. 20
  • First listen: "Without You." The lead single, and the track where a live-drum take turns into a dub bassline under a shoegaze shimmer. 20
Pick Follow the Light if you want the week's quietest record and you like folk that keeps the bass loud.

The Avalanches — No Bad Memories

  • Artist: The Avalanches
  • Album: No Bad Memories
  • Label: Modular Recordings
  • Genre: Plunderphonics, dance pop
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 21
  • Signal: NPR's fifth pick and 544 upvotes on its release thread. The Quietus published a review on release day. 1822
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: The fourth album, the first in six years, runs 31 tracks in 52 minutes and is built around advertising: invented jingles, fake commercials, and samples of the composer Suzanne Ciani, who wrote audio identities for companies like Coca-Cola and Atari. Guests include Karen O, Rivers Cuomo, Jamie xx, Carly Simon, Barry Can't Swim and John Glacier. One track, "Blue Shadows" with Karen O, was already singled out as a single in this column's July 17–24 issue; it is the same recording. 2122
  • First listen: "Magic Wand." The Quietus picks out the Barry Can't Swim collaborations as the record's most exciting results, and this is the one built from a 1970s proto-disco sample's fade-out ad libs. 22
Pick No Bad Memories if you want fifty-two minutes that behaves like a radio dial being spun.

Hip-hop / R&B

Gucci Mane — Against All Odds

  • Artist: Gucci Mane
  • Album: Against All Odds
  • Label: 1017 Global Music / Atlantic
  • Genre: Trap
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 23
  • Signal: HotNewHipHop named it the night's pick, noting the album arrived with only a few days' notice and that Gucci has kept October busy for years. Its r/hiphopheads thread opened at 70 upvotes. 52425
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Seventeen tracks, the first opening at 2:36 and the last titled after his own label, 1017. Summer Walker shows up on "Last night in ATL," OJ da Juiceman on "Lambo pass by," and ICE DAVIS on "Priorities." It follows last year's Episodes, the album released alongside a memoir of the same name. 2324
  • First listen: "Back against the wall." The opener, and the fastest read on which Gucci showed up this time. 23
Pick Against All Odds if you want the week's heaviest rap record and you already know which Gucci you prefer.

Lucky Daye — ALOUD!

  • Artist: Lucky Daye
  • Album: ALOUD!
  • Label: Warner Records
  • Genre: R&B, soul
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 26
  • Signal: A track from it sits on Spotify's New Music Friday, and the album landed on Apple Music's R&B Now. Its r/hiphopheads thread opened quietly at 23 upvotes. 627
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Fifteen songs in 39 minutes, and his first album since leaving RCA. The title plays on "aloud" against "allowed," which is the record's argument against needing industry permission. The production leans on 1980s soul and 1990s R&B, with Leon Thomas, Muni Long and Pusha T stopping by. 26
  • First listen: "Mouf Say." The Pusha T track, and the one Spotify put in front of the widest audience this week. 6
Pick ALOUD! if you want a full-length R&B record rather than three singles.

A$AP Rocky — "Shroom Clouds" (feat. reggie & Jeremih)

  • Artist: A$AP Rocky
  • Release: "Shroom Clouds" (feat. reggie & Jeremih)
  • Label: A$AP Rocky Recordings
  • Genre: Rap
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 28
  • Signal: It opened the day at 423 upvotes and 30 comments on r/hiphopheads, and it is on Spotify's New Music Friday. HotNewHipHop reports it is the pre-release single for Disc 2. 569
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: A single track rather than an album, and the clearest read on where Rocky's next record is heading. reggie and Jeremih share it with him. The same night brought a deluxe edition of Tierra Whack's WHACK'S MUSEUM and an archival tape from LUCKI, both logged from the window rather than picked here. 528
  • First listen: The single is the whole thing. It runs one track.
Pick "Shroom Clouds" if you want three minutes of rap and no album commitment.

Electronic

Two Shell — Infinite Now

  • Artist: Two Shell
  • Album: Infinite Now
  • Label: Young
  • Genre: Club, Eurodance
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 29
  • Signal: It appears in Pitchfork's release guide and in Apple Music's New in Dance and New Music Daily. 1029
  • Listening route: Apple Music · Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: The London duo's second album runs ten tracks in 40 minutes and treats the dance floor as a joke it also sincerely loves. Apple Music hears 1990s French touch meeting Eurodance and hyperpop in a "retrofuturistic hall of mirrors"; "Technology" is described as an irony-poisoned sequel to Daft Punk's Human After All. 29
  • First listen: "The Nightmare." It opens the record with a glitching robot asking whether you are ready to go infinite, which is the album stated as a thesis. 29
Pick Infinite Now if you want forty minutes of dance music that is in on its own joke.

Nikki Nair — Majestic Animals EP

  • Artist: Nikki Nair
  • Album: Majestic Animals EP
  • Label: Hyperdub (HDB166D)
  • Genre: Club, breaks
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 30
  • Signal: His first solo release for Hyperdub, and he turns up the same day as a guest on The Avalanches' No Bad Memories. 2131
  • Listening route: Bandcamp · Apple Music
  • Why spend time: Four tracks in 18 minutes, named after animals: "Groundhogs," "Tapir Spectrum," "Primate Indicator," "Walrus2." Hyperdub's own description says the EP explores the limits of blunt MIDI instruments against pastoral sounds, which is a fair warning about what you are getting. 30
  • First listen: "Groundhogs." The opener, and the EP's lead track. 31
Pick Majestic Animals EP if you want eighteen minutes and no filler.

Jacques Greene — jg

  • Artist: Jacques Greene
  • Album: jg
  • Label: LuckyMe
  • Genre: House, UK garage
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 11
  • Signal: His first self-declared club album, mixed by Pearson Sound and mastered by Joker. 11
  • Listening route: Apple Music · Bandcamp
  • Why spend time: Eleven tracks in 40 minutes, and a return to the floor after two records that drifted away from it. Features come from friends rather than a marketing shortlist: DJ BORING, Ouri, Jonah Yano, CFCF, umru, crushed, SAM-E and SEES00000. 11
  • First listen: "Presence." The lead single, and the track that announces the direct sound this one is built on. 11
Pick jg if you want house music with a guest list of actual collaborators.

Classical

Vaughan Williams: A Sea Symphony & Maconchy: Nocturne for Orchestra — London Symphony Orchestra / Antonio Pappano

  • Artists: Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha (soprano), Will Liverman (baritone), London Symphony Orchestra, Antonio Pappano
  • Album: Vaughan Williams: A Sea Symphony & Maconchy: Nocturne for Orchestra
  • Label: LSO Live
  • Genre: Choral symphony
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 32
  • Signal: It leads Presto Music's round-up for October 16, with praise from BachTrack and The Guardian quoted on the page. 12
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: Recorded at the Barbican in February 2026. BachTrack's Chris Garlick called the Sea Symphony "a performance to treasure, one of the greatest Vaughan Williams interpretations I have experienced in a concert hall," and The Guardian singled out the London Symphony Chorus for "laser-focused discipline and an impressive homogeneity of sound." The coupling is Elizabeth Maconchy's Nocturne, prompted by Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. 32
  • First listen: "A Song for All Seas, All Ships." The symphony's opening movement, and the one the quoted reviews are describing. 32
Pick A Sea Symphony if you want one big choral work and you have already heard the obvious ones.

Duologues — Rachel Podger & Lucie Horsch

  • Artists: Rachel Podger (violin), Lucie Horsch (recorder), Jane Rogers, Alex Rolton
  • Album: Duologues
  • Label: Channel Classics
  • Genre: Baroque chamber music
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 33
  • Signal: One of the records Presto Music leads with this week. 12
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: Presto calls the programme "miniatures of musical conversation": Bach's 15 Inventions BWV 772–786 and the Duets BWV 802–805, Telemann's Sonata for Flute and Violin TWV 40, CPE Bach's Duet Wq. 140, and the "Aria affettuoso" from a Boismortier sonata. It closes with an arrangement of the Irish jig "The Kid on the Mountain." 33
  • First listen: Bach's Invention No. 1 in C major, BWV 772. Two lines, no accompaniment, and the whole idea of the record in a minute. 33
Pick Duologues if you want something you can put on for ten minutes at a time.

Beethoven: String Quartets Op. 59 No. 3, Op. 95 & Op. 133 — Chiaroscuro Quartet

  • Artist: Chiaroscuro Quartet
  • Album: Beethoven: String Quartets, Op. 59 No. 3, Op. 95 & Op. 133
  • Label: BIS
  • Genre: Chamber music
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 34
  • Signal: In Presto's round-up, with the quartet's Beethoven cycle previously praised by Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine and The Strad on the same page. 12
  • Listening route: Presto stream
  • Why spend time: The fifth volume of a cycle begun in 2021, and an SACD-only release. Gramophone has called the playing "dynamic, intelligent, agile and argumentative." The programme opens with the last of the three quartets Beethoven wrote for the Russian diplomat Andrey Razumovsky and ends with the Grosse Fuge, first conceived as the finale of the String Quartet No. 13. 34
  • First listen: The opening movement of Op. 59 No. 3. Start at the top of the disc before you take on the Grosse Fuge. 34
Pick this if you already own a Beethoven cycle and want a period-instrument one that argues with itself.

Country / roots

Zach Bryan — Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs

  • Artist: Zach Bryan
  • Album: Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs
  • Label: Belting Bronco Records / Warner Records
  • Genre: Country, folk
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 35
  • Signal: Spotify names him in the New Music Friday blurb for the week, and the EP sits in Apple Music's Today's Country. 635
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: An eight-song EP, 29 minutes, and the shortest commitment Bryan has asked for in years. Lana Del Rey and Turnpike Troubadours guest. It also ships as a numbered 12-inch with a hardcover book, which tells you how he is treating it. 35
  • First listen: "Lies." The Lana Del Rey duet, and the track Spotify put on this week's New Music Friday. 6
Pick the EP if you want the week's biggest country name without a double album.

Richard Thompson — Hippies, Thugs and Heroes

  • Artist: Richard Thompson
  • Album: Hippies, Thugs and Heroes
  • Label: New West Records
  • Genre: British folk-rock
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 36
  • Signal: NPR put it in its lightning round. 1
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: His 20th studio album, 12 tracks, and the first since 2024's Ship to Shore. The lead single is "Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking." 36
  • First listen: "Cocaine Walking, Booze Talking." The single, and the quickest test of whether this record's humour is your kind. 36
Pick Hippies, Thugs and Heroes if you want a songwriter's record from someone five decades in.

Wyatt McCubbin — 650

  • Artist: Wyatt McCubbin
  • Album: 650
  • Label: Lucille Records / MCA
  • Genre: Country
  • Release date: October 16, 2026 13
  • Signal: Country Standard Time's calendar for the week, and the album is produced by Dave Cobb and recorded live to tape. 1337
  • Listening route: Apple Music
  • Why spend time: A debut after more than 15 years as a Nashville songwriter, ten songs, on Dave Cobb's label. Luke Combs, Zach Top, Lainey Wilson and Cody Johnson have all recorded his songs, and three of his co-writes are charting. Cobb's line about him: "I loved Wyatt because he truly follows in the legacy of great songwriter-artists like Don Williams and Kris Kristofferson." The title points at the 650 spot on the dial for Nashville's WSM, the station McCubbin picked up in his grandfather's garage in rural Ohio. 37
  • First listen: "All Outta You." The preview track, and the shortest read on whether the writer behind other people's hits holds up singing his own. 37
Pick 650 if you want to hear where a professional songwriter goes when the song is finally his.

First clicks

Fontaines D.C.'s Dopamine Chamber is the record to start with: NPR's first pick, Radio Milwaukee's lead, the busiest indie thread of the day and a Pitchfork review all point the same way, and "Six Shot Morning" settles it in four minutes. If you want rap, Gucci Mane's Against All Odds is the heaviest of a week that finally has one, and "Back against the wall" is the test. For forty minutes of dance music that never asks to be taken seriously, Two Shell's Infinite Now is the one.
