NBA Daily Digest: Melton's Warriors return becomes official as East tiers take shape

The NBA had no games in the checked window, but the offseason still produced a useful status change: Golden State Warriors guard De'Anthony Melton's return became official, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Mario Hezonja formally came back from Europe, and a fresh Eastern Conference review put Philadelphia and Miami on the rise while Milwaukee and Boston moved in the opposite direction. The next live league marker remains Hall of Fame weekend, not a game slate.

ESPN listed no NBA games on either July 31 or August 1. That covers the 24-hour window ending at noon Eastern on Aug. 1: there is no score, playoff-series movement or standings change to add. 1 2

The most consequential new transaction in the official log was Golden State's formalization of guard De'Anthony Melton's return. NBA.com says the Warriors made the move official on July 31 after the sides had agreed to a two-year, $11 million contract. The second season includes a player option. Melton averaged a career-high 12.3 points in 49 games last season, giving Golden State a perimeter defender and secondary ball-handler to keep next to Warriors guard Stephen Curry. 3

Cleveland also announced the signing of forward Mario Hezonja at 10:56 a.m. ET on July 31. Hezonja returns to the NBA after six seasons in Greece, Russia and Spain. The Cavaliers' release says he played 80 games for Real Madrid across all competitions in 2025-26, averaging 15.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 23.1 minutes. Cleveland's announcement closes the transaction record for a deal that had been reported earlier. 4

A July 31 Orlando Sentinel review published through Yahoo Sports puts the East's offseason moves into tiers. It labels Philadelphia the clearest upward case: the 76ers swapped forward Paul George for forward Jaylen Brown and added veteran forward LeBron James, alongside guards Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe and center Joel Embiid. The caveat is the obvious one: Embiid's health will determine how much of that theoretical ceiling becomes a real season. 5

Miami also moves up after acquiring forwards Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis from Milwaukee and adding guard Tim Hardaway Jr. The Heat's new frontcourt pairing with center Bam Adebayo gives the East another team with a clear top-end identity, although the roster still needs filling out. Cleveland, meanwhile, was graded as roughly unchanged: guard James Harden's midseason arrival worked, the team lost forward Dean Wade, and Hezonja is the main new forward-sized piece named in the review. 5

The two most interesting downward calls are Boston and Milwaukee. Boston sent forward Brown to Philadelphia for forward George, with center Mitchell Robinson arriving to help the frontcourt; the question is whether a healthier forward Jayson Tatum, guard Derrick White and the bench can offset the loss of a Finals MVP. Milwaukee is in a different phase entirely. A separate Yahoo Sports projection put the Bucks' floor around 14th or 15th in the East and their ceiling as high as seventh, with guard Tyler Herro carrying much of the first-option burden after the Giannis trade. Those are projections, not standings, but they make the offseason divide plain: Philadelphia and Miami are trying to cash in immediately, while Milwaukee is testing whether its younger core can accelerate the rebuild. 5 6

No new game-day injury report, return clearance or active/inactive decision was available in the checked window. ESPN's league injury page still carries older offseason entries, while CBS Sports' freshest dated line is an Aug. 1 "not injury related" status for Boston forward RJ Luis Jr., not a medical update. Health remains the main unresolved variable as teams finish their rosters. 7 8

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame's official schedule puts the next major basketball events on Aug. 14-15 Eastern. Because the schedule runs past midnight in GMT+8, the gala and ceremony fall on Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 locally. NBA TV is listed for both headline programs; the autograph and media sessions have no broadcaster listed. 9

The next meaningful question is whether the East's biggest moves create separation, and whether the unresolved health and roster questions close it again before the season starts.
