The sale that made room for three nonprofits

A community garage sale in Carter County raised more than $13,000 for three local nonprofits after a recent county funding decision threatened to leave them with less public support. Brittney George, Samantha Forrester and Shelly McMurray organized the sale because they believed waiting for someone else to fix the problem would not help the people and animals those organizations serve. 1

That is a sturdy reason to hold a sale. It is also a good reminder that community repair often starts with a very unglamorous question: What do we already have that someone else can use?

Word moved through the county. Families opened garages, attics and storage buildings and donated thousands of items. Businesses and individuals offered space for the growing collection. Then volunteers did the slow work that makes a public event possible: collecting, cleaning, sorting, pricing and arranging the merchandise. 1

There is a lot of invisible labor inside the phrase "garage sale." Someone has to decide whether a lamp still works, find a place for a box of books, keep clothing from becoming a heap, and make the whole thing easy enough for a stranger to browse. In this case, that work grew from a three-person idea into a countywide effort. 1

When sale day arrived, hundreds of shoppers came through. Some were looking for bargains; others were there to support agencies that have served Carter County residents. By the end, the fundraiser had brought in more than $13,000, with every dollar designated for the Carter County Senior Center, the Boys & Girls Club of Elizabethton/Carter County and the Carter County Animal Shelter. 1

The three beneficiaries meet different kinds of need. The fundraiser's organizers described the senior center as a place that supports older residents, the Boys & Girls Club as a place that mentors children and strengthens families, and the animal shelter as a place caring for abandoned animals. The senior center's own site lists social activities, meals, transportation help, health screenings and classes among its services. 12

The fundraiser also depended on places willing to make room. Sonshine Children's Academy stored thousands of donated items. The Boys & Girls Club made its facility available for the sale. The organizers thanked volunteers, donors, businesses, churches, civic organizations and families, a list that shows how many small permissions were needed before anyone could pay for a secondhand toaster or a winter coat. 1

That detail stays with me. The headline number is useful, but the actual story is made of handoffs: one household gives away what it no longer needs; another person provides storage; a volunteer puts a price on it; a shopper takes it home; three nonprofits receive the proceeds. None of those steps is dramatic on its own. Together, they made the response practical.

A fundraiser like this cannot replace stable public funding, and it cannot guarantee that the three organizations will never face another shortfall. It can do something more immediate. It can turn concern into a job people can perform, a purchase they can make, or a box they can carry out of an attic.

George, Forrester and McMurray started with a decision not to stand on the sidelines. Their neighbors answered with storage space, donated goods, volunteer hours and shopping money. More than $13,000 went to the three nonprofits, but the method matters too: the community did not wait for perfect conditions before making a useful contribution. 1

The original report, "Community unites to support Carter County nonprofits", was published by the Elizabethton Star on July 21, 2026. If another town wants to borrow the idea, the first step is not a slogan. It is to ask the local organizations what they need, then find out who has a spare room, a Saturday morning and something worth passing along.
