Why Does Rain Smell Like Earth?

Rain smells earthy because rain releases compounds already present in dry ground. The smell is called petrichor, and geosmin is its main earthy molecule. Soil bacteria such as Streptomyces produce geosmin, while dry ground also holds plant oils. The American Chemical Society says human noses can detect geosmin at about 5 parts per trillion in air. 12

A raindrop can turn those surface compounds into airborne mist. MIT researchers used high-speed imaging to observe air bubbles forming where a drop hits porous soil, rising through the drop, and bursting into aerosols. Their experiments found more aerosols in light and moderate rain than in heavy rain because a fast impact leaves less time for bubbles to form. 3

That is why the strongest earthy smell often arrives at the start of a shower after dry weather: the ground has ingredients ready, and the first drops provide the launch. 4
