Azerbaijan GP 2026: Russell holds off Verstappen by 0.196s as chaos cuts Antonelli's lead to 66 points

George Russell wins the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole, holding off Max Verstappen by 0.196 seconds through two Safety Car periods, as Kimi Antonelli recovers from a Q1 crash to finish fifth and sees his championship lead cut to 66 points.

George Russell won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position, leading all 51 laps of the Baku City Circuit and holding off Max Verstappen by 0.196 seconds after a late yellow flag cost him turbo power on the final tour 1. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar finished third, completing the team's first double podium since April 2024 2.
The weekend reordered the championship. Kimi Antonelli arrived in Baku with an 81-point lead and left with 66, after hitting the wall at Turn 1 in the first part of qualifying and recovering to fifth from 16th on the grid 3. Victory was Russell's third of the season and his first since Round 8 in Austria 4.
Baku's 10th appearance on the calendar produced two Safety Car periods, two separate collisions between team-mates, and a restart pile-up that removed three cars at once 4.

Race result and podium

Russell completed the 51 laps in 1:38:02.143. Verstappen crossed the line 0.196 seconds behind, which The Race recorded as Formula 1's closest finish since 2002 2. Hadjar took third, 10.704 seconds back, giving Red Bull its best weekend of the season 5.

Six drivers were not classified, and Valtteri Bottas was classified 16th despite crashing out late 5. Lance Stroll stopped on lap seven with a water pressure problem 6. Fernando Alonso pulled off on lap 20 with what he described as a sudden power loss down the straight, although Honda's initial inspection found no engine fault 2. Alex Albon crashed out, and Franco Colapinto took out his Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly and McLaren's Lando Norris at the first restart 5.

Qualifying and the grid

Russell took pole with a 1:42.526, the largest margin of the season, at 0.837 seconds over Leclerc 1. Behind him the field compressed: Leclerc's 1:43.363 beat Piastri by one thousandth of a second, and Hadjar, back after missing three rounds with a wrist injury, qualified fourth 7.

Antonelli's weekend turned on his first run. The championship leader hit the inside wall at Turn 1 during Q1 and broke his suspension, ending his session with no representative time 7. Verstappen, meanwhile, had looked like a pole contender but qualified eighth after what Red Bull described as power unit problems 4. Norris lost his final Q3 run to a lock-up and lined up fifth 1.
Four penalties reshaped the grid. Sainz dropped five places, from ninth to 14th, for failing to slow for yellow flags; Perez kept 20th after a three-place penalty for impeding Piastri; and Aston Martin's Alonso and Stroll were sent to the back row with 30-place and 20-place penalties for taking additional power unit elements 8. That grid put Antonelli 16th, one place behind Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad 8.

How the Baku race unfolded

Russell made a clean start and had 1.2 seconds on the field within a lap 1. Piastri jumped to second, Norris passed Hadjar for fourth, and Verstappen picked off Gasly and Hamilton; behind them Antonelli dropped to 17th 1.
The Red Bulls were the story of the first stint. Hadjar took fourth back from Norris, Verstappen followed him past the McLaren, and both then worked their way by Leclerc — Hadjar first, after a move around the outside of Turn 1, then Verstappen 1. Red Bull then asked Verstappen through, and he closed on Piastri while Russell stretched his lead past five seconds 1.
Tyre trouble and driver error punctuated the middle of the race. Verstappen reported that his medium tyres were "not good"; Russell, out front by nearly 10 seconds, brushed the wall at Turn 15 and asked Mercedes to watch his pressures 1. Norris lost sixth to Hamilton after a lock-up at Turn 5, then ran wide on the main straight and surrendered two more places to Gasly and Antonelli 1.
Albon's lock-up into the barrier brought out the first Safety Car on lap 31 4. The field dived for the pits, and Red Bull pulled off a double stack to keep Verstappen and Hadjar in the order they ran 1.
The restart is where the race broke open. Russell held the lead and Verstappen finally took second from Piastri, but at the Turn 1 braking zone Colapinto locked both front wheels, hit Gasly, and sent his team-mate into Norris; all three retired 1. Almost simultaneously, Lindblad tagged team-mate Lawson's rear wheel, drawing the line of the afternoon from the New Zealander: "I love getting taken out by my team mate. That's pretty sick" 1.
The second restart decided the podium places. With the field released again, Piastri repeated the mistake others had made, locking up at Turn 1, spinning, and dropping to 15th 1. Antonelli moved up to sixth and passed Hamilton down the main straight with eight laps left, and from there the race became a two-car fight: Verstappen never let Russell out of his tow, keeping within a second as both edged close to the walls 4. A yellow flag on the final lap for Bottas's crashed Cadillac made Russell lift; the turbo lag that followed almost cost him the race, and the two cars crossed the line 0.196 seconds apart 4.

Safety cars, compounds and pit strategy

The grid split almost evenly on tyres. Russell, Verstappen, Norris, Gasly and Colapinto were among the medium runners; Leclerc, Piastri, Hadjar, Hamilton and Bearman were the leading soft runners, gambling on early pace around a circuit where overtaking is possible but the walls punish a mistake 1.

SoftLeclerc, Piastri, Hadjar, Hamilton, Bearman, Lawson, Albon, Ocon, Alonso, Stroll 1
Two Safety Car periods removed most of the strategic freedom. Since the field was compressed at the lap 31 caution, the front-runners took their single stop there and rejoined on rubber intended to last to the flag, which neutralised the usual undercut game 1. Most of the order came back out as it went in — the reshuffle happened at the restarts rather than in the pit lane 4. Sainz ran a different race, stopping early after dropping to 19th and coming back through the field to the final point 2.
Baku rewarded straight-line speed and punished anyone without it. Mercedes' low-drag package was, in Russell's words, "working exceptionally well on the low-drag circuits," and it was backed by a substantial aerodynamic upgrade due for Malaysia 6. Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur said the engine deficit cost his cars "one position per lap" on Baku's long flat-out run, and Leclerc's front-row grid slot came from a chassis advantage the power unit could not sustain 6. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella blamed a draggy car and an unoptimised power unit for leaving his drivers "watching the mirrors rather than thinking about how they can progress" 2. Audi's first major upgrade since June improved the chassis but not the weakness Nico Hulkenberg named in one line: "We need more top speed, simple as that" 6.

Incidents, penalties and standout drives

Colapinto's mistake, and Alpine's response. The stewards gave Colapinto a five-place grid penalty for the next round in Malaysia, imposed in lieu of a 10-second time penalty he could not serve because he retired 2. The decision drew criticism. Norris said straight after the race that the driver responsible should be banned, adding that "some drivers shouldn't be in Formula 1," then apologised to Colapinto in a message the following Monday: "I know better and emotions were running high but that is not an excuse" 9. Alpine's own reaction was sharper than the FIA's; the team's official release carried de facto boss Flavio Briatore's threat to "reflect on it and consider what course of action should be taken" 6. The cost was concrete: Alpine lost a likely double points finish, and Racing Bulls' hold on fifth in the constructors' championship grew to 15 points 2.
Lindblad escapes punishment. The Racing Bulls rookie was not penalised for making contact with Lawson at the same restart, a decision The Race argued was harder to justify than the light treatment of Colapinto 6. Lindblad kept going, then recovered to pass both Haas drivers and beat Ocon to the line by 0.030 seconds for seventh 2.
Hadjar's return. After six weeks out with a wrist injury, Hadjar called Baku the "first time with the team that I actually get to do a very clean weekend" 6. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies called it "outstanding," and noted Hadjar's handling of the team's request that he stay behind Verstappen 6.
Antonelli's damage limitation. The Baku weekend was, on Antonelli's own assessment, his worst of the season, and he drove it accordingly: "I was driving a bit like my grandmother today, just damage-safe mode, just didn't take a risk" 3. His fifth place, helped by the safety car and by other drivers' mistakes, cost him 15 points to Russell rather than a larger figure 3. He also said he would "re-establish the order" in Malaysia 3.
Haas's best weekend, Audi's miss. Both Haas cars scored, breaking long runs without points for each driver 2. Ocon, who is expected to leave Haas at the end of the season, said of his eighth place, "I deserved that, not all the rest of this year." Bearman's ninth ended a point-less run stretching back to the Canadian Grand Prix in May 2. Audi, which had arrived with a chassis upgrade, scored nothing and lost ground to Haas in the constructors' standings 6.
A quiet disaster for Bottas. Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas was nearly a minute behind team-mate Sergio Perez at his first pit stop, and later crashed out with a harvesting problem; he described the weekend as having "no pace at all" 2.

Championship standings after Round 15

Antonelli leads the Drivers' Championship on 302 points, 66 clear of Russell, after a weekend in which he lost 15 points to his team-mate rather than the 25 he might have dropped 10. Hamilton's sixth place moves him to 199, and Verstappen's second lifts him to 163, still 139 behind the leader.
