About me

Loading stats card…
Hi. I'm South Korea. Ranked 25th in the world, which sounds like I'm bragging, but honestly I've been through a lot to get here. Twelve World Cup appearances. A 2002 semi-final run that still causes arguments at dinner tables in Madrid and Rome. A coach who's been in this exact seat before and didn't win then either, but he's really trying. 1
I'm told I "work hard and create counter-attacking opportunities." That's a diplomatic way of saying I don't control the ball very much against good teams — 48% possession on average at Qatar 2022 — but I make those transitions hurt. 2
Recently switched up my look. Was a back-four guy my whole qualifying run, then six days before the tournament I pivoted to a 3-4-3. New me. Low-key terrifying for my wing-backs, but we're calling it a glow-up.

My photos

Main photo: Son Heung-min, arms out, celebrating against Germany, Russia 2018. Classic.
Second photo: Kim Min-jae absolutely murdering a cross at Bayern Munich. Head of marble. Heart of obsidian. Stays in.
Third photo: The team photo from 2002. Yes, that's a real tournament, and yes, Spain and Italy both went home early. I don't make the rules.

My friends say I'm…

  • Unbeaten in qualifying (16 matches, zero losses, six points ahead of Jordan) 2
  • The first Asian team to reach a World Cup semi-final (2002, still the record) 3
  • "Disciplined, cerebral, and tenacious" (direct quote from the people who write press releases about Lee Jae-sung)
  • One bad penalty call away from anything

My situationship: Son Heung-min, 33

Let me be upfront. There is someone. His name is Sonny. He moved to LA in 2025 and it's been… complicated. 2
Son Heung-min of Korea Republic, arms wide, stadium lights behind
Son Heung-min at LAFC — 142 caps, 54 goals, one Premier League Golden Boot, and one very large amount of national expectation to carry. 1
142 caps. 54 international goals. Premier League Golden Boot. Europa League winner with Spurs. The most universally adored figure in South Korean sport, full stop. 1
He completed his mandatory military service. He scored 10 qualifying goals for this campaign. He agreed to captain the side and carry the whole nation's emotional weight again. His left foot or his right foot — either one, doesn't matter, he'll use whichever one hurts you more.
We need him. He needs this. We haven't put it in writing but I think we both know this is his last World Cup. Nobody's saying it out loud.

Also in the rotation (my full 26-man squad, condensed for the profile)

Between the posts: Kim Seung-gyu (FC Tokyo), Song Bum-keun, Jo Hyeon-woo
The back line:

Kim Min-jaeBayern Munich"The Monster" — recovers like he teleports
Jens CastropBorussia MönchengladbachHalf-German, full Korean — chose his mom's country, broke our hearts open
Lee Han-beomMidtjyllandQuietly reliable. Doesn't get the credit.
Seol Young-wooRed Star BelgradeNew face, brave choice
South Korea probable starting lineup graphic
South Korea's probable 3-4-3 starting XI — a formation that appeared in the second half of qualifying's final game and is now the official plan. 1
The engine room:
Lee Kang-in (PSG) is the creative outlet. If Sonny is the face, Lee Kang-in is the brain — elite vision, passing range, occasionally infuriating. Hwang In-beom (Feyenoord) is the engine, when fit. The "when fit" clause is doing a lot of work in that sentence. 1
Lee Jae-sung (Mainz 05) has 100+ caps and still gets called the "unsung hero." Over a century of appearances for his country and the man can't catch a break from the narrative. He just came back from a long injury layoff. He is ready to ignite, and yes, I am rooting for him. 1
Up front:
Son Heung-min (LAFC), Cho Gue-sung (Midtjylland), Oh Hyeon-gyu (Beşiktaş)

What I'm looking for

Ideally? Someone to match with me in the Round of 32. Maybe the Round of 16 if the stars align and Kim Min-jae keeps redirecting everything. I'm not going to say "fourth place" out loud because the last time that happened it was 2002 and several international football associations still haven't fully processed it.
I'm in Group A with Mexico (they have home-continent advantage and know every parking spot at the stadium), Czechia (my first date — June 12, Guadalajara, 8pm), and South Africa. 2
I unbeaten in qualifiers. I have a back three I barely practiced. I have a coach who was fired after 2014 and got the job back anyway. I am precisely the kind of team that upsets someone in the group stage and ruins three people's brackets.
You have been warned.

Dealbreakers

  • Teams who think the 2002 run "doesn't count" — please swipe left, we are not compatible
  • Asking me to explain the military service rule at the dinner table (we've been through this)
  • Anyone who still calls it soccer to my face in an attempt to seem casual

Icebreaker question

"Your coach Hong Myung-bo was a player at the 2002 World Cup — the semi-final run. Now he's coaching it. How does that feel?"
He finished fourth as a player. He got fired after 2014 as a coach. He's back for 2026.
We contain multitudes.

My hype man: Park Ji-sung (retired, always present in spirit)

Former Taegeuk Warrior. Champions League winner with Manchester United. Recently on record saying Son will break South Korea's World Cup goalscoring record in this tournament. No pressure. Just the nation's entire historical legacy on your left foot. (Or right. Truly, pick one.)
