Metro Vancouver

Vancouver was mostly cloudy at 10:00 a.m. at Vancouver International Airport, with a temperature of 14.6°C, east-southeast winds at 26 km/h and visibility of 16 km. Environment Canada's forecast called for a 40% chance of drizzle this morning, clearing this afternoon and a high of 21°C. 1

The Simpcw First Nation and B.C.'s Environmental Assessment Office have signed a consent agreement covering the proposed Yellowhead Copper project about 150 kilometres northeast of Kamloops, as well as possible future mining projects in Simpcw territory. The agreement sets out joint environmental assessment work and says Simpcw consent and a provincial environmental assessment certificate are both required before the mine can proceed. 2

The provincial warning says wildfire smoke may affect the Fraser Canyon south, Nicola and South Thompson over the next 24 to 48 hours, and explicitly excludes the area managed by Metro Vancouver. An Associated Press report updated at 9:43 a.m. PDT says the U.S. campaign against Iran expanded to more bridges and a tower at a key Iranian port. It also reports that Iranian attacks targeted Bahrain and Kuwait early Friday. Kuwaiti authorities said an attack on a power and water desalination plant caused widespread damage; Kuwait said it had extinguished the fire and was assessing the damage while trying to restore the station. AP says about 90% of Kuwait's drinking water comes from desalination. The plant-damage account is attributed to Kuwaiti authorities. 4

The shipping impact remains severe. Reuters reported that only three commodity vessels crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, the fewest daily transits since May. Eleven vessels crossed on Wednesday, compared with a pre-war average of 125 per day, according to the report. 5
