Before Gemini Plans Your Trip, Decide Which Google Data It Gets (2026)

An AI travel planner can work from public prices and maps. To tailor the trip around your reservations, habits, and family, it needs a different ingredient: access.

Google now describes Gemini as able to combine Maps, Flights, Hotels, Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube; its agent can monitor trip emails, build an itinerary, and pre-fill a booking form before handing control back for the final purchase. 1

That can save real work. It also turns a simple travel question into a permissions decision.

Start with the least data that solves the job

My default is no connected apps for the first draft. Give Gemini your dates, budget, departure airport, mobility needs, and a short list of preferences. Let it compare public options. You may find that this is enough.

If the generic plan misses something important, add one source at a time:

Connect Google Workspace only when your bookings are the bottleneck. This connection can include Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Keep, Tasks, Chat, and Meet. It is broader than access to one confirmation email. 2
Connect Search services when your saved places and search history would materially improve the route. This group can include Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. 2
Leave Photos, YouTube, and Contacts off unless you can name the benefit. Photos might help Gemini infer the food, places, or pace you enjoyed on earlier trips. YouTube history can shape recommendations. Contacts can expose phone numbers, addresses, birthdays, and inferred relationships. Those may be useful, but they are not needed to compare a flight and a hotel. 2

Google lets eligible users choose individual connection groups rather than pressing "Connect all." Personal Intelligence is optional, but it requires a personal account, age 18 or older, and the Keep Activity setting to be on. Availability still varies by country and account. 3

Translate the privacy language before opting in

Google says it does not train its generative AI directly on your entire Gmail inbox, Drive, Calendar, Contacts, or Google Photos library.

That sentence is narrower than "my connected data is not used for training."

When Keep Activity is on, Gemini Apps activity can be used to improve Google services, including training generative AI. Relevant summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences from connected emails, files, and photos may be used. Google adds that when an email or file is brief or especially relevant, a summary may be the email or file itself. 2

A subset of connected-app interactions may also be reviewed by people. Google says it first disconnects those interactions from the account and reduces personal information, except in cases involving feedback, abuse, or harm. The reviewed material can include prompts, responses, summaries, excerpts, and inferences from relevant emails and files. 2

So the established facts point to a practical distinction:

Google says it is not bulk-training directly on the whole library.
Your use of that library can still produce interaction data used for model improvement and limited human review.

If that second condition would be unacceptable for a work document, a medical itinerary, a private family situation, or someone else's information, do not connect the app. Google itself warns users not to connect apps containing personal or confidential information they would not want used for training or seen by a reviewer. 2

Keep the expensive and irreversible steps human

Google's travel example has Gemini research options, organize bookings, draft lists, and begin filling forms. The user presses "book." Chrome's auto-browse feature is likewise designed to pause for confirmation on sensitive actions such as purchases or social posts. 1 4

Keep that boundary. Before any booking, message, or calendar change, manually check:

Passenger names, dates, airports, and time zones.
The final price, currency, baggage, and cancellation terms.
Which account, card, calendar, or recipient the action will touch.
Whether the source page still shows the same availability.

This is more than general caution. Google's privacy notice says Gemini can make mistakes while completing tasks, including making purchases or sharing data with third parties unexpectedly, and tells users to supervise web browsing and tasks closely. 5

Disconnecting is not the same as deleting

If you change your mind after the trip, use both controls:

Disconnect the app in Personal Intelligence settings.
Delete the relevant chats or Gemini Apps Activity.

Google says either step alone can leave another copy available: disconnecting does not remove information already present in past chats, while deleting chats does not stop Gemini from finding the same information again in a still-connected app. Updates or deletions in the original app may also take days to affect Gemini. 3

Deletion has a limit worth knowing. Chats selected for human review are not removed when you delete your activity and may be retained for up to three years. Other Google services can also keep their own activity separately. 5

A sensible default for one trip

Use Gemini without connections to sketch the trip. If your confirmations are scattered, connect the smallest app group that fixes that problem. Keep Photos, YouTube, and Contacts off unless they add something you genuinely want. Review every consequential action yourself, then disconnect and clear the related activity when the job is done.

An AI assistant should earn each permission with a concrete task. Convenience is real, but "more personal" is not automatically more useful.
