September 21–27 Warehouse Club Scorecard: One Book Opens and Two Clubs Go Quiet
Costco's September 21–October 18 book is the only full savings book running this week, Sam's Club has none at all, and BJ's is down to a short list of store coupons that mostly expire before Sunday.
Costco's in-warehouse savings book for September 21 through October 18 opened on Monday, and it is the only full savings book running at any of the three clubs this week. Sam's Club's August 26 through September 20 Instant Savings Book closed on Sunday, and the club has posted nothing in its place; the next one is expected in late October. BJ's Wholesale Club's Fuel Saver event ended the same Sunday. 123
Costco's own weekly warehouse page has not turned over yet, so the September 14 set of dated offers is still what the page carries, running through September 27. 4
That calendar leaves one clean same-item race between two chains and leaves several categories with a price at a single club. Everything below was readable at the source on September 22.
Headline picks
1. Giovanni Rana Ravioli Bake Kit: the one race, and Costco takes it by the ounce. Costco's 35-ounce kit is $13.99 marked down to $9.79. Sam's Club sells a 25-ounce kit for $10.27 through September 25. Priced by weight, Costco's tray costs 28.0 cents an ounce against Sam's 41.1 cents. Costco's offer runs through October 18. 15
A 35-ounce bake kit is two or three dinners for two people, and it freezes, so the size works for a small household. This is the only product this week with a verified price at two of the three clubs.
2. Facial tissue, counted by the tissue: Costco. Kleenex Trusted Care runs $19.99 marked down to $15.99 for ten boxes of 230 tissues, which is 2,300 tissues at 0.70 cents each. The best tissue price this scorecard verified last week was 1.11 cents a tissue. No current Kleenex or tissue offer was readable at Sam's Club or BJ's this week, so Costco's row stands alone at a real number. 1
Ten boxes is closet space as much as it is money. A one- or two-person household that buys this should already know where the boxes will live.
3. Laundry, counted by the load: Costco again, on its own label. Kirkland Signature Ultra Clean HE is $18.49 marked down to $14.89 for 194 ounces, or 146 loads at 10.2 cents a load. Costco's Tide Plus Ultra Downy in the same book, 128 ounces and 100 loads at $16.49 after $4 off, works out to 16.5 cents a load. BJ's has a $2.00 coupon on Gain Tango Twist, 170 ounces, expiring September 27, and that coupon is the only detergent offer readable there this week. 13
BJ's shelf price for that jug is where the comparison would land, and it was not readable on September 22. With 146 loads in one jug, this suits a household running several loads a week and, for one person, lasts about a year.
4. Tires: Costco opens two set-of-four offers. Costco takes $80 off a set of four new Michelin passenger or light truck tires and $60 off a set of four BFGoodrich tires, both valid September 21 through October 18, with the installation package included. 6
This is the first dated set-of-four tire offer this scorecard has been able to verify since the spring, and it arrives with no second chain to race: BJ's tire-center promotion amounts and Sam's current tire terms were both unreadable this week.
5. Sam's Club's short list, and its clocks. The club's item-level markdowns are running even with no book: M&M's Pop'd Caramel, 19 ounces, $13.48 marked down to $5.98 through September 23; Member's Mark lasagna soup, two 48-ounce pouches, $11.87 through September 25; Member's Mark storage tote, 27 gallons, $7.98 down to $6.98 through September 28. 57
The candy bag is 19 ounces and the soup is two pouches, so both fit a small household; the tote is only a deal if you have somewhere to put it.
Category by category
| Category | Costco | Sam's Club | BJ's | Qualified verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food | Chicken noodle soup, 8 × 18.6 oz, $7.99 after $6 off; ravioli bake kit, 35 oz, $9.79; Donut Shop K-cups, 80 ct, $35.99 after $9 off; Nature Valley protein bars, 30 ct, $9.99 after $5 off; Liquid I.V., 30 ct, $20.99 after $8 off. All through Oct. 18. 1 | Ravioli bake kit, 25 oz, $10.27 through Sept. 25; M&M's Pop'd Caramel, 19 oz, $5.98 through Sept. 23; Nutella B-Ready, 36 ct, $13.98 through Sept. 29; Miss Vickie's spicy dill pickle, 22 oz, $7.98 through Sept. 29. 5 | Gorton's haddock or cod, 10 ct, $2.00 off through Sept. 28; Chobani Flip variety, 16 pk, $3.00 off through Oct. 11; Royal Basmati rice, 20 lb, $2.00 off through Oct. 11. 3 | Costco takes the single same-item race, at 28.0 cents an ounce against Sam's 41.1. Everything else in this row is a different product, or a coupon whose shelf price is unreadable. |
| Household | Lysol Advanced toilet bowl cleaner, 4 × 32 oz, $7.49 after $4 off; Lysol disinfectant spray, 3 × 19 oz, $11.99 after $4 off; Lysol disinfecting wipes, 4 × 95 ct, $10.99 after $3 off; Kirkland laundry detergent, 146 loads, $14.89; Scrub Mommy scrubbers, 8 ct, $12.49 after $3.50 off. 1 | Storage tote, 27 gal, $6.98 through Sept. 28. 7 | Five Lysol coupons — toilet bowl cleaner 4 pk, disinfectant spray 3 × 19 oz, wipes 5 pk, all-purpose cleaner and 150 oz laundry sanitizer — between $2.00 and $3.00 off, four of them expiring Sept. 22; Weiman granite and stone cleaner $2.50 off through Sept. 23; Aspen paper plates, 600 ct, $2.00 off through Sept. 24; Gain 170 oz $2.00 off through Sept. 27; Bona floor cleaner $3.00 off through Oct. 11. 3 | Withheld. BJ's prints the coupon value, and the shelf price it comes off is the half still missing, so no final price exists to compare. Costco's Lysol nets are the only verified finals this week. |
| Electronics | The weekly page still carries the LG 77-inch OLED AI B6E at $1,699.99 through Oct. 4 and the three Dyson tools — Supersonic Nural $100 off, Airwrap i.d. $130 off, Airstrait $100 off — through Oct. 2. 4 | The electronics Instant Savings page returns no items this week. 8 | No item-level electronics offer was readable this week. 3 | No cross-chain pair. The Dyson tools are the only dated electronics offers readable anywhere this week. |
| Tires | $80 off a set of four Michelin and $60 off a set of four BFGoodrich, Sept. 21 – Oct. 18, installation included. 6 | Current tire terms unreadable this week. | Tire-center promotion amounts unreadable this week. | Costco alone. Worth pricing a set here against a local quote while the offer runs. |
| Travel | Costco Travel's featured offer is the Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana all-inclusive package with a digital Costco Shop Card, two nights or more; no package price is published. 9 | Publishes no comparable package price. | Publishes no comparable package price. | No cross-chain winner. |
| Gas | Publishes no national average; check the local station. | Publishes no national average. | Regular gas averaged $4.104 a gallon across 210 BJ's stations in 22 states on Sept. 22. AAA's national regular average that day was $4.4750, so BJ's sits 37.1 cents lower. Club+ adds 5 cents a gallon. The Fuel Saver event, which paid 10 cents a gallon per participating item, ended Sept. 20. 101112 | BJ's leads the one readable benchmark. Gas is up: AAA's national average was $4.3289 a week ago and $4.1024 a month ago. 11 |
Reading the per-unit tags
A bigger pack and a bigger saving are two different claims, and this week's numbers separate them.
- Per tissue: ten boxes of 230 is 2,300 tissues, which turns $15.99 into 0.70 cents a tissue. The same shelf price on a smaller count would read as a worse buy. 1
- Per load: 146 loads turns $14.89 into 10.2 cents a load, which is how a $14.89 jug beats a $16.49 jug and also beats every other detergent priced this week. 1
- Per ounce: 35 ounces turns $9.79 into 28.0 cents an ounce, which is what makes the larger, cheaper checkout total the cheaper product. 1
Cherry-picker's route
Single best stop: Costco. It holds the only full book running this week, the only same-item cross-chain win, and the two cheapest unit prices on the board.
Put these on the Costco list:
- Ravioli bake kit, 35 oz, $9.79 through October 18 — the week's one race, won on weight. Freezes well. 1
- Kirkland Signature laundry detergent, 146 loads, $14.89 through October 18 — 10.2 cents a load, the cheapest verified laundry on the floor. One jug is roughly a year for one person. 1
- Kleenex Trusted Care, 2,300 tissues, $15.99 through October 18 — 0.70 cents a tissue, with the closet-space caveat. 1
- Lysol Advanced toilet bowl cleaner, 4 × 32 oz, $7.49 through October 18 — the lowest checkout total in the household row. 1
- Michelin or BFGoodrich set of four, $80 or $60 off through October 18, if the tread gauge says it is time. 6
Fill up at BJ's, which carries the only readable fuel benchmark this week, and clip anything from the Lysol group there only if the shelf price makes the coupon worth it — four of those coupons expire Tuesday, September 22. 310
Sam's Club is worth a stop this week only for named items: the 27-gallon tote at $6.98 through September 28, and the M&M's bag at $5.98 through September 23. 57
Membership math
Costco lists Gold Star at $65 and Executive at $130. The $65 upgrade against the 2% Executive reward breaks even at $3,250 in eligible annual spending, and gas earns nothing toward it. 13
Sam's Club lists Club at $60 and Plus at $120, a $3,000 break-even on 2% Sam's Cash. New members joining between July 6 and September 30 pay $25 for Club or $55 for Plus, a first-year price. 14
BJ's lists Club at $60 and Club+ at $120, the same $3,000 break-even on 2% rewards, capped at $500 per 12-month period and excluding gas, alcohol, tobacco, lottery tickets, gift cards, propane, membership fees and third-party services. Club+ adds 5 cents a gallon at BJ's Gas and two free same-day deliveries a year. 12
Next week's preview
BJ's carries the week's tightest clock: the Lysol group, the Weiman cleaner and the Aspen plates all expire between September 22 and 24, and the Gain, Brekki and Gorton's coupons close September 27 and 28. 3
Sam's Club runs on item-level markdowns until its next Instant Savings Book, which is expected to open October 28 — the longest stretch between books this year. 2
Costco's book holds until October 18, and its weekly page, still showing the September 14–27 offers, should turn over shortly. The Michelin and BFGoodrich tire offers run to the same October 18 date as the book. 46
One same-item race between two clubs, one tire offer at a single club, and a Sam's Club shelf with no book on it: this is what a book-turnover week looks like, and it is the thinnest scorecard this column has run. The numbers above are the ones that survived the filter.
