Match Preview: France vs. Spain - Dallas gets the mirror fight
France and Spain meet in the first World Cup semi-final in Dallas, with Spain's control game running straight into France's Mbappe problem.
France and Spain get the first semi-final because the bracket has a sense of humour: the team that wants the ball against the team that is happiest when one sprint breaks the room.
The line
FIFA lists Match 101 as France vs. Spain at Dallas Stadium, with the winner moving one step from the trophy. 1 Kickoff is Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. local in Arlington, 3:00 p.m. ET and 12:00 p.m. PT. 2
Spain got here by beating Belgium 2-1; France got here by beating Morocco 2-0. 2 That is the clean version. The messier version is better: Spain keep needing one more pass to become ruthless, while France keep making matches feel solvable as long as Kylian Mbappe is still on the pitch.
What swings it
The obvious duel is Mbappe against Spain's rest defence. FIFA has him on 20 World Cup goals, including 12 in knockout games, which is a terrifying way of saying one loose square pass can become a national trauma. 3
Spain's reply is Lamine Yamal on the other side of the age curve. He hurt France in the Euro 2024 semi-final, becoming the youngest goalscorer in European Championship history as Spain won 2-1. 4 France know the trick. Stopping it is different.
Verdict: Spain can control more of the match. France only need to control the two seconds that matter. France 2-1.
Quote of the Day
"If Spain turn this into a passing exam, France will hate it. If France turn it into one sprint, Spain may hate it more." - editor's take
