Getting Into Northwestern Kellogg's MBA: A Data-Driven Guide for Fall 2027 Applicants

A single-school reference on Northwestern Kellogg's two-year MBA for Fall 2027: the published Class of 2027 profile, the one written essay and five video essays, the January 6 deadline, a $130,072 first year with the federal PLUS loan ending, and the complete Class of 2025 outcomes.

Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management runs its flagship MBA over two years, starting in September: a core year of management fundamentals, then electives, with a summer internship between them 1. It is one of six full-time MBA options the school offers and the one this issue covers 2.
Three published facts govern the cycle a Fall 2027 applicant is in now. Round 1 closed on September 9, 2026, so the next deadline is January 6, 2027, followed by March 31, 2027 3. The application itself changed for 2026–27: one written essay of up to 550 words, plus five video essays due within 96 hours of the round deadline 24. And the first year of the degree is estimated at $130,072, with scholarships considered automatically but the federal loan route narrowing sharply from July 1, 2026 56.
One thing to settle before reading any number here: Kellogg's class profile describes the people who enrolled, and its public pages stop there. The school publishes no application count, no number of admits, no acceptance rate and no yield for the Two-Year MBA 7. Each figure below carries the class or the page it came from.

What Kellogg publishes about the class it admits

All of the following describe the incoming Two-Year MBA class, which arrives as the Class of 2027.
Published figureValueNotes
Students in the class534Incoming Two-Year MBA class 7

Average years of full-time work experience5.1At entry 7
Undergraduate degrees in STEM fields41%A record for the program 8
Entering from financial services24%The highest share since 2021, up from 18% the year before 8
Two averages describe a cohort that has already been admitted. The only academic rule Kellogg attaches to an application is a bachelor's degree or its equivalent by the time you matriculate, and the school states plainly that it has no minimum acceptable test score 2. The 24% from financial services also means three quarters of the class arrived from somewhere else, which matters for the myth section further down.

What the committee says it selects for

Kellogg lists every component the admissions committee assesses: application responses, essays both written and video, transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, the resume, and the interview report, with English-proficiency evidence added for international candidates 2. The qualities the school says stand out are the ability to push past comfort zones and question the norm 2.
Experience is the part with a published expectation. Kellogg strongly recommends at least two years of full-time work experience on entry, measured across breadth and depth, and it counts military service toward that 2. The deferred-entry Kellogg Future Leaders route is the exception 2. Previous study in business or economics is not required for the two-year program, though the curriculum leans on quantitative work and the school encourages introductory calculus and statistics before enrolling 2.
Scores come with three rules worth reading twice. Kellogg requires a GMAT or GRE score from a single sitting and does not accept superscores, gives no preference to either test, and sets no minimum score 2. Scores stay valid for five years, and the application has to be complete before a score expires; Kellogg's codes are 6WZ-3J-89 for the GMAT and 7921 for the GRE 2.
International applicants satisfy the English requirement in one of three ways: a degree from a U.S. institution, a degree from an institution where English was the only language of instruction, or two consecutive years of work in the United States or another English-speaking country within the last five years 9. If none applies, the committee reads a TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo score alongside the rest of the file and the interview, and it reserves the right to ask any candidate for a score 9. Every Kellogg full-time MBA is a STEM-designated degree, which makes graduates eligible for the 24-month STEM extension of Optional Practical Training and takes authorized work in the United States to three years before an employer has to sponsor a visa 9.

Where Kellogg sits in field-specific rankings

In the 2026 U.S. News business school rankings Kellogg is fourth, in a tie, and its strongest specialty positions are in the subjects the school has long been known for: second in marketing, third in management (tied), ninth in business analytics (tied), tenth in entrepreneurship (tied), and eleventh in finance (tied) 10. The Financial Times placed the Global MBA eleventh in its 2026 ranking 1112, and Poets&Quants ranked it first among U.S. full-time MBA programs for the second year running 13.
A ranking of this kind measures faculty, resources and the reputation of the school's alumni over decades. It carries no information about any single application, and treating it as a signal of your own odds is where most applicants go wrong.

The Fall 2027 calendar

RoundApplication deadlineDecision released
Round 1September 9, 2026December 9, 2026 3
Round 2January 6, 2027March 24, 2027 3
Round 3March 31, 2027May 12, 2027 3
The application fee is $250, and Kellogg waives it for active-duty U.S. military applicants and veterans, and for candidates employed by Teach For America, Title 1 schools, AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps within the past three years 2. Military applicants verify status with a pay stub or a letter from a commanding officer; veterans submit Form DD-214 2.
Two mechanical rules are easy to miss. An applicant may apply to one full-time Kellogg program per year, and after submitting may name one alternate full-time program or the Evening & Weekend MBA, with a short paragraph explaining the interest 2. And Kellogg asks international candidates to use Rounds 1 or 2, because the visa process has to start early in many countries 9. With Round 1 gone, that advice points at January 6 for anyone who needs a student visa.

The one written essay

The required essay runs to 550 words and is asked in two parts 2:
Part I: An MBA is a significant investment of time, energy and resources, and the decision to pursue one deserves serious reflection. Tell us about the pivotal experiences and decisions that have brought you to this moment in your career, how they have shaped your ambitions, and why now is the right time to take this next step.
Part II: Now turn the lens outward: beyond what you hope to gain, what do you hope to contribute to the students who will learn alongside you?
Re-applicants answer a separate 250-word prompt about how they have grown since the previous application 2.
The admissions office's own instruction on this is short: be authentic, and there are no right or wrong answers 2. The prompt's structure is the more useful guide. Part I asks for a causal account, so the experiences you choose have to explain the ambition rather than accompany it, and the "why now" half needs a reason the timing is right rather than a statement that it is. Part II is where most drafts thin out into adjectives about being collaborative. Kellogg has named what it wants to see in a classmate — someone who can motivate a team to drive impact, question the status quo and work with people who hold different views — so the strongest Part II gives one past instance of doing exactly that 2. The application cannot be edited once submitted, so the essay is finished before the file is 2.

The five video essays

The video section is five questions, each answered in up to one minute, and the whole exercise takes about 30 minutes including setup 2. You need a computer with a webcam and a microphone, and the link appears on your Application Status Page only after you submit the application and pay 2. The deadline is 96 hours after the round's application deadline, and there is no second take: practice questions can be repeated as often as you like, but an official answer cannot be redone 2.
Two years of prompts are worth knowing. The school's June 2026 announcement describes the 2026–27 application as more focused, with one written essay across all programs and five short video responses for the full-time programs, two more than before, each just 60 seconds 4. The essays, written and video together, sit on the committee's list of what it assesses 2.

Two recommenders, three prompts

Kellogg asks for two letters of recommendation. Ideally one comes from a current supervisor or manager, and the second from someone who can evaluate professional performance and managerial or leadership potential, such as a former supervisor, a previous employer or a client 2. Additional letters are neither required nor encouraged 2.
Each recommender answers the same three prompts 2:
  • An example of how you worked with colleagues, clients or stakeholders who held different perspectives, how you navigated it, and what that shows about leading or collaborating in complex environments (300 words).
  • How your performance compares with other well-qualified people in similar roles, with specific examples (300 words).
  • The most important piece of constructive feedback the recommender has given you, with the circumstances and your response (250 words).
The prompts are the preparation brief. A recommender who can answer the third one with a real instance, and describe what you did with the criticism, covers the ground the school has marked; a generic letter of praise does not.

The interview

Interviews are by invitation, sent on a rolling basis throughout the evaluation period until decisions are released, and all of them are virtual 2. Kellogg states that the timing of your invitation says nothing about your status as a candidate, and that a scheduled interview cannot be moved; if you cannot attend, you cancel it through the Office of Admissions and the school reaches out directly if it needs more information 2. What the interview adds to the file is interpersonal and communication skills, career focus, and motivation for the MBA 2. The school also accepts updates after submission — a new job, recent grades, a better test score — added through the supplemental information page, though it warns there is no guarantee an update is considered before a decision 2.

What the two years cost, and who gets help

Kellogg publishes 2026–2027 tuition and estimated first-year expenses. For the Two-Year MBA, the first year breaks down like this 5:
Item (Two-Year MBA, first year)2026–27
Tuition$88,536 5
Food and housing$22,941 5
Health insurance$5,996 5
Books and supplies$1,743 5
Travel, personal, computer, fees and loan costs$8,856 combined 5
Estimated total, first year$130,072 5
These are first-year figures, and a second year carries another year of tuition and living costs.
Scholarships work on a short list and one exception. Admitted students are considered automatically, and are told at the point of admission if they have been selected; the Finance Fellows award is the only one that needs something extra, a 250-word essay answering what excites you about finance and how you plan to make an impact in a finance career 14. Finance Fellows covers full tuition for Two-Year MBA students committed to a finance industry or function 14. Applying does not affect the review of the MBA application, and the interest form has to be submitted in the same round as the application 14. Around it sit named awards with narrower targets, among them the Austin Scholarship, the Donald P. Jacobs International Scholarships, the Healthcare at Kellogg Scholarship and a PepsiCo scholarship for marketing 14.
Loans are where the arithmetic changed this cycle. U.S. citizens and permanent residents can borrow up to $20,500 a year in Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford loans, at a fixed 7.94% for loans first disbursed between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, with a 1.057% origination fee 6. The Federal Direct Graduate PLUS loan, which could be borrowed up to the full cost of attendance minus other aid, ends for new borrowing on July 1, 2026 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act 6. From the 2026–27 academic year, Kellogg's own page says, graduate students are eligible only for the $20,500 unsubsidized loan and may need private or institutional loans for the rest 6. Against a $130,072 first year, that leaves a large gap to be closed from scholarships, savings or private credit.
The paperwork has two parts. U.S. citizens and permanent residents file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, using Northwestern's code 001739, and then complete the Kellogg Application for Financial Aid, which appears in the applicant portal after the round deadline; international students complete the Kellogg form and can use the Northwestern institutional loan or private lenders 6. Veterans can look into Post-9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon benefits, and the school runs a veterans benefits page 5. Graduates who take public or nonprofit roles can apply to the Collins Family Loan Assistance Program, which reduces educational debt for alumni who work full time in a social impact role for at least two years 6.

Where graduates go

This is the section the channel's readers usually have to take on faith, so here is the whole accounting. The Two-Year MBA Class of 2025 numbered 526 students. Of those, 429 were seeking employment; 63 were company-sponsored or already employed, 20 were starting a business, one had postponed the search, and 13 did not report 15. Kellogg measures the timing of offers against that group of 429 15:
Point of measurementReceived an offerAccepted an offer
By graduation73.9%69.5% 15
Three months after graduation87.6%85.5% 15
Six months after graduation—90% 1516
Pay is reported at three months after graduation, and 83% of job-accepting graduates reported usable salary information 15. The median base salary was $175,000, the median signing bonus $30,000, and the median total compensation $205,000; 85% of accepted offers reported a signing bonus 1516. Kellogg's own commentary adds that the median base salary is nearly double what these graduates earned before the MBA 17.
IndustryShare of accepted offersMedian base salaryBase salary rangeMedian signing bonus
Consulting38%$190,000$67,113 – $210,000$30,000 15
Financial services21%$175,000$80,000 – $250,000$35,000 15
Technology19%$151,500$105,000 – $190,000$40,000 15
Consumer packaged goods9%$128,000$116,500 – $190,000$32,500 15
Healthcare6%$142,500$90,000 – $250,000$30,000 15
Manufacturing3%$159,500$130,000 – $199,000$25,000 15
Two more cuts matter for a reader deciding whether this degree fits a plan. By function, marketing and sales took 19% of offers at a median of $150,000, finance 16% at $175,000, and general management 11% at $150,000 15. By geography, 94% of accepted offers were in the United States, with the Midwest taking 39% and the Chicago metro alone 34% at a median of $180,000; the West took 24% and the Northeast 18%, with New York at 16% 15. International placements accounted for 6% of accepted offers, at a median base salary of $129,848 15.
Employers hired in volume. Among companies taking three or more graduates, Boston Consulting Group hired 41, Amazon 25, McKinsey 23, Bain 22, Capital One 9, PwC Strategy& 7, and Kearney and PepsiCo 6 each, across a list that also includes Accenture Strategy, Deloitte Consulting, EY-Parthenon, Adobe, Bank of America, Eli Lilly, J.P. Morgan Investment Banking and Samsung's Global Strategy Group; the reported total was 203 hires 15. The Class of 2025 also set a record for entrepreneurship, with 20 graduates launching ventures in fields including marketing, search funds and social enterprise 1617. Seven in ten accepted offers came through school-facilitated channels rather than the graduate's own network, mostly through school-facilitated internships 15.
Two published sets of employment figures can look like a contradiction, so it is worth naming the difference. U.S. News reports two-year averages for the full-time program of 70.1% employed at graduation and 86.4% three months after, while Kellogg's own report for the Class of 2025 shows 69.5% and 85.5% accepted by the same points 1015. The gap is about two things: one average spans two graduating classes rather than one, and the two counts measure different events — being employed at a moment in time, against accepting an offer at some point before it.
For national context on the two biggest destinations, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for management analysts, the occupation that covers most consultants, at $101,860 as of May 2025, with employment projected to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035 18; the median for financial managers was $166,570 in May 2025, with the same 10% projected growth 19. Those are medians across all workers in the occupation, at every level of experience, and the school's own medians for the same destinations sit far above them.

Five myths checked against Kellogg's own pages

You need a 700-plus GMAT. Kellogg has no minimum acceptable score, accepts a GMAT or GRE from a single sitting, and does not take superscores 2. The 687 GMAT Focus average for the Class of 2027 describes the people who enrolled; the school's own sentence about it ends at that description 7.
You need a business background. Previous study in business or economics is not required, though calculus and statistics help because the curriculum is quantitative 2. A record 41% of the Class of 2027 hold undergraduate degrees in STEM fields, and 24% came from financial services, which is the highest share since 2021 8.
Federal loans will cover whatever a scholarship does not. The unsubsidized Stafford loan caps at $20,500 a year, and the Graduate PLUS loan that used to close the rest of the gap ends for new borrowing on July 1, 2026; from 2026–27, graduate students are limited to the $20,500 unsubsidized loan and may need private or institutional credit 6. Against a $130,072 first year, the funding plan is the application's most concrete risk 5.
The video essays are a formality. They are five scored questions, up to a minute each, with no second attempt at an official answer, due within 96 hours of the round deadline, and essays both written and video appear on the committee's list of what it assesses 24.
"90% employed" means the whole class found work. The 90% is measured against the 429 students who were seeking employment, out of a 526-student class; 63 graduates were company-sponsored or already employed, 20 were starting businesses, one had postponed, and 13 did not report 15. The distinction matters most to international graduates, whose outcomes are counted in the same total: within six months, 82.0% of the non-permanent work-authorization group had accepted an offer, against 88.0% of the group with permanent U.S. work authorization 15.

Five things to do next

  1. Decide your round and, if you need a student visa, take the January 6, 2027 date, because Kellogg asks international candidates to apply by Rounds 1 or 2 39.
  2. Sit the GMAT or GRE if you have not, and send the score from a single sitting rather than planning to combine attempts; Kellogg's codes are 6WZ-3J-89 and 7921, and the score has to be valid when the application is complete 2.
  3. Write the 550-word essay in its two parts and give Part II the same specific evidence as Part I, since it asks what you will contribute to the people you study with 2.
  4. Brief two recommenders early — a current supervisor plus someone who has seen you lead — and hand them the three published prompts, especially the one about constructive feedback, which needs a real instance and your response to it 2.
  5. Build the funding plan before the deadline, not after admission: file the FAFSA under code 001739 and the Kellogg aid application once it appears after your round, and if finance is your target, submit the Finance Fellows essay in the same round as the MBA application 614.
The program has one more fact worth carrying into any conversation about fit: Kellogg's full-time MBA runs on a core curriculum called the Growth Core, then electives and more than 1,000 experiential learning opportunities, with 37 exchange programs across 20 countries and an alumni network of more than 70,000 1. None of that is an argument for admission. It is the material you would be paying for, and the basis on which to compare it with whatever else is on your list.
