The gateway to AI models is joining Stripe.

OpenRouter announced on 19 August 2026 that it is joining forces with Stripe. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the coming weeks. 1

OpenRouter is a model marketplace and gateway: one interface sits between a developer and 400+ AI models, with provider choice, observability, cost management, and routing for price, performance, and uptime. The company says it processes 10+ trillion tokens per day for more than 10 million developers and companies. 1

That middle layer decides which path a request takes while the app keeps one integration. OpenRouter says its mission, name, product, roadmap, and routing principle remain unchanged in the announcement. Stripe adds a large customer network, data on how internet businesses grow, global infrastructure experience, and fraud-and-abuse expertise, according to the same announcement. 1

The deal is about the access layer between apps and model providers. Its terms remain undisclosed, and closing is still pending. The useful test after closing is simple: does provider choice remain neutral and user-driven as the gateway scales? 1
