The breath of life — pale blue liquid, fiercely reactive gas, paramagnetic, the engine of combustion and respiration.
Oxygen is weakly magnetic (paramagnetic) because of its two unpaired electrons. As liquid, it is pale blue. It makes up 21% of air and supports all combustion. Nearly every energy-producing reaction in biology uses oxygen.
