Longyearbyen: The Arctic Town Where Births and Burials Happen Elsewhere

Longyearbyen is the largest settlement in Svalbard, the Arctic archipelago governed by Norway. About 2,500 people live across the islands, with most residents in Longyearbyen. 1

Longyearbyen has no maternity ward, so pregnant residents travel to mainland Norway weeks before delivery. When a resident is nearing death, the person is usually moved to mainland Norway for care, burial, or cremation. Permafrost slows decomposition, which makes local burial impractical. Longyearbyen follows a long-standing policy for these situations rather than a written ban on birth or death. 1

The town still has schools, cafes, museums, and cultural festivals. 2
