John Jumper says he is joining Anthropic

John Jumper said he will leave Google DeepMind and join Anthropic after nearly nine years, making the AlphaFold co-creator the newest senior AI researcher to cross into Anthropic's orbit. He posted the move on X on June 19, adding that he will take time to recharge before joining. 1

Jumper wrote: "After nearly 9 years, I have decided to leave Google DeepMind and join Anthropic." He also thanked Demis Hassabis for letting him lead the AlphaFold team six months after finishing his PhD, and called Google DeepMind a "special place." 1 Hassabis replied that their AlphaFold partnership "changed the world" and showed what AI could do for science and medicine. 2

Reuters identified Jumper as a senior research scientist and VP, Engineering Fellow at Google DeepMind, and said Anthropic had not immediately commented on his new role. 3 Business Insider also reported that Jumper did not state what job he will take at Anthropic, only that he will first take time to recharge. 4

This is not a standard staff move. Jumper shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Hassabis and David Baker for work tied to protein structure prediction. 3 AlphaFold has predicted more than 200 million protein structures, a scale Reuters described as cutting years off biological and medical research. 3

For Anthropic, the signal is technical depth outside the usual coding-assistant race. The company has already been expanding enterprise distribution and model access around Claude, but Jumper's background points to a possible stronger push into AI for science. That inference is not yet confirmed by Anthropic, so the next test is whether his role maps to research, product, safety evaluation, or scientific partnerships.

Reuters noted that the move comes while frontier labs are competing for scarce AI research talent, and quoted D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria saying OpenAI and Anthropic can offer elite researchers "less bureaucracy and a more focused effort on pursuing Superintelligence." 3

Two items matter now. First, Anthropic has not disclosed Jumper's title, reporting line, or mandate. 3 Second, Reuters says Anthropic is hosting a science event on June 30. 3 If Jumper appears there, the announcement may become more than a recruiting win: it could define how Anthropic wants Claude and its research organization to address scientific work.
