MLB Week 18: Boston rises, Miami slides, and Detroit's buy-low case strengthens
The Dodgers and Brewers stay on top, but Boston's 15-game streak, Miami's 12-game skid, Detroit's positive run profile and a decisive deadline week reshape the middle of all 30 MLB teams.
The Dodgers and Brewers stay at the top, but the middle of the league has turned over again. Atlanta moves into the No. 3 slot, Boston rises to No. 8 after a 15-game winning streak, and Miami falls to No. 17 after a 12-game skid. The current standings also give Detroit the week's best buy-low case: a 50-56 record, a plus-28 run differential and a 56-50 expected record.
This composite averages the current ordinal lists from MLB.com, Bleacher Report, FanSided, and ESPN's July 23 list 1. The ESPN list predates Sunday's games, so the standings and injury sections use the later MLB.com snapshot. No current The Athletic ordinal list surfaced in this window. FanGraphs supplied the forward-looking analytics layer, not a current ordinal list.
All 30 teams ranked
The table uses the MLB.com standings snapshot after play on Sunday, July 26.
X-W/L is MLB.com's expected record. The movement column compares this week's composite with last week's published composite; ties were separated by the current run profile and recent form. The source range shows the highest and lowest rank among the four current lists. 2| Rank | Team | Record, form | RD / X-W/L | Move | Source range | Week 18 read |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Los Angeles Dodgers | 67-39, 6-4, L1 | +155 / 69-37 | — | 1-1 | The only unanimous No. 1. Ohtani's knee remains a watch item, but the rotation is getting closer to internal reinforcements. |
| 2 | Milwaukee Brewers | 66-39, 7-3, W2 | +142 / 67-38 | — | 2-2 | The league's second-best run profile and a 3.43 ERA keep Milwaukee clear of the pack. The question is how much more rotation depth it needs before the deadline. |
| 3 | Atlanta Braves | 62-43, 7-3, W1 | +107 / 63-42 | ▲2 | 3-3 | Atlanta is 13-9 in July and has won three straight series. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Sean Murphy are both working toward returns, which gives the Braves the clearest internal upgrade among the top three. |
| 4 | Tampa Bay Rays | 62-43, 6-4, W3 | +42 / 57-48 | ▼1 | 4-4 | The record is excellent, but the expected record is five wins lower. FanGraphs still gives Tampa Bay a 98.7% playoff probability and a 51.9% chance to win the AL East. |
| 5 | New York Yankees | 59-46, 6-4, L1 | +84 / 61-44 | ▲2 | 5-6 | New York has won nine of its last 13, but Aaron Judge remains out and Cody Bellinger went on the 10-day IL on July 26. |
| 6 | Chicago Cubs | 59-46, 6-4, L1 | +76 / 60-45 | ▼2 | 5-7 | The Cubs remain a top-six team with Pete Crow-Armstrong leading FanGraphs' WAR leaderboard at 7.0. The small composite drop reflects a crowded upper tier, not a bad week. |
| 7 | Philadelphia Phillies | 57-49, 4-6, W1 | -11 / 52-54 | ▼1 | 7-8 | Philadelphia's record still earns a top-seven place, but the negative run differential and 52-54 expected record are the clearest regression warning among the contenders. |
| 8 | Boston Red Sox | 54-50, 8-2, W1 | +46 / 57-47 | ▲4 | 6-9 | The 15-game streak ended Sunday, but Boston has still won six straight series and sits well above its expected record. The Curtis Mead trade says the club is acting like a buyer. |
| 9 | Chicago White Sox | 55-49, 6-4, W1 | +46 / 57-47 | ▼1 | 8-10 | Chicago remains in first in the AL Central and has the same positive actual-to-expected gap as Boston. Its ranking is no longer a novelty pick. |
| 10 | Cleveland Guardians | 54-53, 3-7, L5 | -18 / 51-56 | — | 10-15 | The five-game skid has erased much of Cleveland's margin. A 54-53 record keeps the Guardians in the race, but the run profile points the other way. |
| 11 | Pittsburgh Pirates | 54-52, 5-5, W1 | +40 / 57-49 | — | 12-12 | Pittsburgh is the only team with a perfect four-source agreement outside the top 10. Its plus-40 differential and 57-49 expected record justify a higher ceiling than the raw record suggests. |
| 12 | Arizona Diamondbacks | 55-51, 6-4, L2 | -3 / 53-53 | ▲3 | 9-15 | Arizona's source range is wide, but FanSided's No. 9 reflects a 10-4 run over the last 14 games cited by Bleacher Report. The next test is a direct Wild Card series at Pittsburgh. |
| 13 | St. Louis Cardinals | 53-52, 3-7, L1 | -1 / 52-53 | — | 14-16 | The Cardinals have lost nine of their last 16 and have almost no run-differential cushion. They remain above the cut line because the NL middle is so compressed. |
| 14 | Texas Rangers | 53-52, 5-5, L1 | -25 / 50-55 | — | 11-18 | Texas leads the AL West despite the division's weakest run profile. A series at Tampa Bay will test whether the standings or the underlying numbers are the better guide. |
| 15 | Seattle Mariners | 52-54, 5-5, W1 | +12 / 54-52 | ▲1 | 11-21 | Seattle's positive differential keeps it ahead of the .500-or-below cluster, but the source range shows real skepticism. The Mariners then visit the Dodgers. |
| 16 | Washington Nationals | 54-52, 6-4, W2 | +30 / 56-50 | ▲1 | 10-18 | Washington ranks only 16th in the composite despite a strong 584 runs and a 56-50 expected record. James Wood is eighth on FanGraphs' WAR board at 4.3. |
| 17 | Miami Marlins | 52-54, 0-10, L12 | +2 / 53-53 | ▼8 | 13-23 | This is the week's sharpest fall. Miami's current record and expected record are still nearly identical, but a 12-game losing streak has turned a June buyer story into a deadline question. |
| 18 | San Diego Padres | 53-53, 5-5, W3 | -21 / 51-55 | ▲2 | 17-19 | Three straight wins have restored a .500 record, not the underlying case. San Diego is 22-38 against teams above .500, according to Bleacher Report, and its next week includes Colorado before a difficult stretch. |
| 19 | Houston Astros | 52-55, 5-5, L1 | -47 / 49-58 | ▲3 | 13-22 | Houston's rise on the freshest lists is driven by a recent five-game winning streak, but the current record and negative run profile keep the Astros below the true Wild Card tier. Yordan Alvarez is third on FanGraphs at 5.1 WAR. |
| 20 | Baltimore Orioles | 51-55, 6-4, L1 | -14 / 52-54 | ▼1 | 16-22 | Baltimore's seven-game run earlier in the month has cooled. The Orioles are close enough to the Wild Card group to matter, but the minus-14 differential leaves little room for another slide. |
| 21 | Detroit Tigers | 50-56, 6-4, L2 | +28 / 56-50 | — | 15-22 | Detroit is still the best buy-low team on the board. Its actual record is six wins below the expected mark, while Dillon Dingler ranks fourth in FanGraphs WAR at 5.0. The Orioles series is also a deadline referendum. |
| 22 | Minnesota Twins | 53-54, 5-5, W2 | -27 / 51-56 | ▼4 | 14-21 | The Twins have the record to stay in the conversation, but the negative differential and Joe Ryan's arm-fatigue delay make a large buying move hard to justify. |
| 23 | Cincinnati Reds | 49-55, 6-4, W1 | -66 / 45-59 | ▲1 | 20-24 | Cincinnati has won six of its last 10, yet the minus-66 differential says the recent form has not repaired the season-long problem. |
| 24 | Toronto Blue Jays | 48-58, 3-7, L1 | -62 / 46-60 | ▼1 | 23-25 | Toronto is 9-19 since June 22 in Bleacher Report's account. Addison Barger is headed for season-ending elbow surgery, and Kevin Gausman remains a possible deadline decision. |
| 25 | New York Mets | 44-62, 4-6, W1 | -62 / 47-59 | ▲1 | 25-28 | Juan Soto went on the 10-day IL with a left calf strain on July 25. That pushes an already weak Mets roster closer to seller territory. |
| 26 | San Francisco Giants | 44-61, 4-6, L1 | -57 / 47-58 | ▼1 | 25-27 | San Francisco has lost seven series by sweep and is a clear seller in the current ranking conversation. Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray are the names most often linked to the deadline. |
| 27 | Kansas City Royals | 45-62, 7-3, W2 | -96 / 44-63 | ▲2 | 24-28 | Kansas City is the low-end riser: seven wins in 10 games and two series wins, but a minus-96 differential still makes this a short-form bump rather than a turnaround. |
| 28 | Athletics | 44-61, 3-7, L2 | -125 / 41-64 | ▼1 | 26-30 | Oakland is 4-19 over its last 23 games and owns the worst run differential in the league. There is no credible case for a quick rebound. |
| 29 | Los Angeles Angels | 42-64, 4-6, W1 | -65 / 47-59 | ▲1 | 28-30 | The Angels' expected record is better than the actual mark, but 42-64 is still the second-worst record in MLB. The ranking remains a rebuild call. |
| 30 | Colorado Rockies | 42-65, 3-7, L2 | -110 / 44-63 | ▼2 | 29-30 | Colorado has the worst record and FanGraphs' lowest forward projection at 65-97. The Rockies are last even though Oakland's run differential is worse. |
The moves that changed the board
Boston's streak changed the middle
Boston is the clearest riser because the results and the underlying numbers point in the same direction. The Red Sox went 8-2 over the current 10-game window, carry a plus-46 differential and sit at 57-47 in MLB's expected record. The 15-game streak is over, but the club has still won six consecutive series. MLB.com, Bleacher Report and FanSided all place Boston between Nos. 6 and 9, while ESPN has the Red Sox at No. 9. 3 4 5
The timing matters. Boston has already acquired Curtis Mead, and a team that looked like a possible seller before the break now has to decide whether to add around a roster that is 7.5 games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East but within the wider playoff fight. The Red Sox at the Dodgers from Friday through Sunday is the week's best test of whether the rise belongs in the top eight. 6
Miami's 12-game skid is the real collapse
Miami's slide is more serious than a normal three-game losing streak because it erased the club's margin almost immediately. The Marlins are 0-10 in the current window and have fallen eight composite spots from last week's No. 9. Their plus-two run differential and 53-53 expected record say the roster has not been as bad as the streak, but the standings now show a 52-54 team ten games behind Atlanta in the NL East.
Philadelphia visits Miami through Wednesday, giving the Marlins a direct chance to stop the skid against a team that is itself carrying a negative run differential. If Miami loses that series, the deadline conversation shifts from whether to buy to which veteran pieces can be moved. 2 6
Atlanta and New York repaired their cases
Atlanta's climb to No. 3 is supported by a 7-3 stretch, a plus-107 run differential and a 63-42 expected record. The Braves also have two meaningful internal reinforcements in the pipeline: Acuna and Murphy are both on rehab assignments. That is a better near-term growth case than simply hoping the standings catch up.
The Yankees move to No. 5 after winning nine of 13, but the health discount remains. Judge is still waiting to resume baseball activity, and Bellinger's hamstring injury adds another lineup problem. The Yankees at the Cubs from Friday through Sunday will be a direct test of two teams with identical 59-46 records and different injury pressures. 7 6
Arizona is rising, Detroit is still the buy-low
Arizona moved up three composite places and has a winning record, but the run differential is nearly neutral. Its next three games at Pittsburgh are more informative than another series against a bottom-tier club because both teams are in the NL Wild Card cluster. Pittsburgh's 57-49 expected record is the strongest in the group outside the top 10.
Detroit is the more interesting analytical bet. The Tigers are six games under .500 but six games better in expected record, with a plus-28 run differential. FanGraphs projects an 80-82 finish, which is not a playoff forecast, but it does support the idea that Detroit has played below its true level. The Orioles-Tigers series from Monday through Wednesday could influence whether Tarik Skubal stays a stretch-run anchor or becomes the headline trade chip. 8 6
The analytics check
MLB's expected record and FanGraphs' forward projections answer different questions. X-W/L describes how the current run totals translate into wins; FanGraphs projects the rest of the season from its depth-chart system and does not factor in schedule. The two agree on the top: Dodgers 69-37 expected and a 100-62 projected finish, Brewers 67-38 and 96-66, Braves 63-42 and 92-70. 2 8
| Signal | Team | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Best current buy-low | Detroit Tigers | 50-56 actual, 56-50 expected, plus-28 run differential. |
| Biggest overperformance risk | Philadelphia Phillies | 57-49 actual, 52-54 expected, minus-11 run differential. |
| Biggest record-to-expected gap | Tampa Bay Rays | 62-43 actual, 57-48 expected, plus-42 run differential. |
| Best recent form | Boston Red Sox | 8-2 over the current 10-game window, with the 15-game streak ending Sunday. |
| Best individual production | Pete Crow-Armstrong, Cubs | 7.0 FanGraphs WAR, first in MLB. |
| Strongest young core signal | Detroit Tigers | Dingler has 5.0 WAR and McGonigle has 4.0, both in FanGraphs' top 12. |
The forward model gives the Dodgers a 100-62 projection, the Brewers 96-66, the Braves 92-70, Tampa Bay 91-71 and the Yankees 90-72. At the other end, Colorado is projected for 65-97, Oakland 70-92 and the Angels 68-94. FanGraphs' current playoff-odds page gives the Dodgers a 100.0% postseason probability, the Brewers 99.8%, the Braves 98.0%, the Rays 98.7% and the Yankees 98.2%. 8 9
A current MLB team-stat page exposed OPS, runs, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts, but not a consistent team FIP, wRC+ or bullpen-ERA field in the accessible view. Those measures are not estimated here. The article uses the available run-differential, expected-record, OPS, ERA, WAR and projection layers instead. 10 11 12
Injury and deadline watch
The deadline is August 3 at 6 p.m. ET, so the next week is a decision window, not background noise. Boston and Detroit have moved from possible sellers toward buyers or hold decisions. San Diego is still a .500 team, but the Padres' record against winning opponents and the Mason Miller speculation leave them exposed if the next few games go badly. Toronto's season has deteriorated enough that Gausman is a possible trade piece, while the Blue Jays also lost Barger for the season. 13 7
The most important health updates from the current week are concentrated in contenders. The Yankees added Bellinger to the IL while Judge remains out. Ohtani's knee inflammation delayed a Dodgers bullpen session. Juan Soto went on the Mets' IL with a left-calf strain. Joe Ryan's arm fatigue pushed back his next Twins start, and Spencer Arrighetti went on Houston's 15-day IL after leaving a start early. These are not equal injuries, but each changes the team's deadline calculus. 7
The next seven days
The schedule gives this edition five clean tests of the ranking order:
| Series | Dates | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Orioles at Tigers | Monday-Wednesday | Two fringe contenders meet while Tarik Skubal, Adley Rutschman and other deadline names sit in the background. |
| D-backs at Pirates | Monday-Wednesday | Arizona holds the last NL Wild Card position in the series preview, with Pittsburgh one game back. |
| Rangers at Rays | Tuesday-Thursday | The AL West leader with a minus-25 differential meets the team with the AL's best record-to-expected gap. |
| Yankees at Cubs | Friday-Sunday | Both teams are 59-46 and occupy top Wild Card positions, with Judge and Bellinger on one side and the Cubs' pitching depth on the other. |
| Red Sox at Dodgers | Friday-Sunday | Boston's streak-driven rise meets the league's best full-season team. |
The official series preview identifies these five matchups as the week's main deadline tests. For the rankings, the most consequential result is not necessarily a sweep. Boston staying competitive at Dodger Stadium, Miami stopping its skid, or Detroit beating Baltimore would each tell us more than a small one-place movement in a single source list. 6
The top is settled. The next week will decide whether Boston belongs in the top eight, whether Miami is still a contender, and whether Detroit's numbers can force the Tigers to keep their best trade chips.
