Nobody Said It Out Loud

Four people found out something enormous about their own life this year, and not one of them was told. They were shown.

Episode guide

Four stories this morning, and in every one of them the truth never got said out loud. It got staged — on somebody's schedule, for somebody's audience.
A best friend walks someone ten steps into a dark field to announce that her boyfriend is her soulmate, a verdict she got from a pendulum. A nineteen-year-old fakes a pregnancy to watch what her boyfriend does, and the browser history afterwards is worse than the prank. A bride puts every close friend in black for the engagement party and quietly leaves one of them out of the wedding party, then out of the wedding. And a stepmother throws away a stepchild's food for years while the father says it must have been an accident, until a puppy camera catches it.
None of these people were told. They were shown, and the showing was arranged by someone who picked the moment.
These are anonymous posters' accounts, paraphrased so nobody can be identified. A Reddit post is one person's version of events rather than proof of every claim in it, and a comment section is a crowd of readers reacting, not a verdict. Where a poster reports what somebody else said or did, this piece repeats it as the poster's account. All four are roundups posted yesterday of older threads and their updates; the stories inside them run from two thousand sixteen to this month.

The field

Two friends from middle school, born on the same day, who celebrated every birthday together and then fell for the same man. One of them dates him for a few weeks; he ends it; a year and a half later he and the other one get together.
What follows is a year of quiet argument, then a party, a bonfire, and a walk into a field at night. Ten steps in, the announcement: he is my soulmate, you two are not meant to be together, and the universe will make sure of it. The witness in the car afterwards explains where the certainty came from — a pendulum, a shrine in a closet, and higher beings who answer yes or no questions. 1
The friendship ends a few days later, by text, with the poster accused of being a fake friend and of holding her best friend back from a spiritual path. Worth saying plainly: a good part of that comment section blamed the poster instead, for dating a man her friend had history with and never asking her first.

The prank

An office story from twenty sixteen. A nineteen-year-old tells a coworker, giggling, that her pregnant sister is going to pee on a pregnancy test so she can show it to her boyfriend and keep the joke running for a few days. 2
The coworker tells her own boyfriend, swears him to secrecy, and then he gets drunk at a company dinner with the boyfriend in question and gives the whole thing away. The boyfriend stands up in the middle of the meal and leaves. By Monday the nineteen-year-old has asked for a transfer.
The part the poster only learns afterwards, from a thank-you call: her now ex-boyfriend had gone home and looked through her browser history, where he found the articles on faking a pregnancy, and on timing a fake so it lines up with when a real one would become possible.

The dress code

Posted to r/AmItheAsshole in twenty twenty-three, with a three-year update that went up last week. Two friends from the first weeks of college, who called each other sisters. One of them is dumped by a boyfriend of three years, and the other sleeps at her house almost every other night for six to eight months because she cannot be alone. 3
The ex comes back, admits he cheated, and gets a second chance. The friend who sat through the worst of it gets gradually frozen out, and then, at an engagement party where every close girlfriend was asked to wear black, she finds out days later that everyone in that group was asked to be a bridesmaid except her.
The update is the good part. She was not invited to the wedding at all, stayed in the group chat until the honeymoon was over so it could not be said that she ruined anything, and then left it. Three of that wedding's bridesmaids are no longer speaking to the bride. The poster is fine, and writes like someone who got her life back.

The pastrami

The heaviest one, and the one to skip if you are eating. A stepmother of seventeen years, a stepchild who moved home after a layoff, and years of small deniable sabotage: bath products used up, keys that move, detergent down the drain, food in the bin. The father's answer is that it must have been an accident. 4
A camera installed for three foster puppies then catches the sabotage on video, and the father's response is to replace whatever gets thrown away — for a year. What ends it is a packet of pastrami: on the recording, taken out of the fridge, thrown on the floor, put back in its container and returned to the shelf. Months before, the poster had been in hospital with food poisoning.
The marriage ends that week, and the divorce is filed. The update, four months on, is about what the family is finding out in therapy, including why the poster's older siblings were cold to her for years, and about decorating the house for Halloween for the first time since she was small.

One question for your group chat

In all four stories, the person at the centre of it was never told. Somebody arranged a colour scheme, a walk in a field, a pregnancy test, a camera in a laundry room, and let the situation do the talking.
So: what has somebody told you without ever telling you?
