The record arrived in the wrong game
Kylian Mbappe finished the 2026 World Cup as its all-time leading scorer, with 22 goals. He reached that mark by scoring twice in France's 6-4 bronze-final defeat by England, a match he made clear he would rather have spent preparing for the final. At 27, in his third World Cup, he also finished with 10 goals, two clear of Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot. 1

He was carrying the story before the finish
Mbappe opened France's tournament with a brace against Senegal and became his country's all-time leading scorer at 58 goals. By the semifinal, FIFA had him on eight goals and three assists, with goals against Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco. 2
The numbers also explain the pressure. Mbappe scored four goals in 2018 and eight in 2022, while France reached both finals, winning the first and losing the second to Argentina. This time France did not reach the match that mattered most. He could lead the scoring table and still leave the tournament unfinished. 1
The response was more revealing than the record
France's semifinal against Spain ended 2-0. Mbappe threatened on the break, but France could not win the second balls that kept Spain in control. Rayan Cherki's explanation was blunt: that was where the game was decided. 3
In Miami, France fell 4-0 behind by halftime. Mbappe scored three minutes after the restart, then added another in the 66th minute from Michael Olise's assist. France got back to 4-3, close enough to make England nervous, but not close enough to erase the first half. 4
Mbappe called the first half human, then described France's second-half version as "mental machines who no longer have feelings." He can turn humiliation into a live contest again. He cannot always turn it into the final he wanted.
