A girl wakes inside a cocoon in a town she cannot leave. She has wings, a halo and no memory of anything earlier. The others in Old Home give her a name, Rakka, taken from the dream she had inside the cocoon, and they give her the one rule nobody will explain: stay away from the Wall. 1
Thirteen episodes, and the story finishes. Yoshitoshi ABe drew the characters for Serial Experiments Lain, then wrote and drew this world himself and wrote the series; Radix animated all of it in a single cour in late 2002. 2 Crunchyroll carries it now, so episode one is a click away. 1
The first episodes give you the whole birth at once — wings, halo, first work assignment — and then ordinary days in a small town where the haibane earn their keep. The show stays quiet for long stretches, and the quiet is doing the work. Rakka spends the series working out who she was before, and whether she is allowed to stay. 1

- To Your Eternity — Fushi arrives with no memory of being anyone and learns grief one person at a time; Rakka starts from the same blank, inside four walls. 3
- House of Five Leaves — twelve episodes, a muted palette, and a story that would rather sit in a room than explain itself: the same patience Haibane Renmei asks for. 4
Four swipes, then episode 1.
