ATLC: 68.6% TTM Growth, 0.18 PEG — Mercury Drives the Surge, Debt Sets the Test
Atlanticus clears the screen on 68.59% TTM sales growth, a 0.18 Finviz PEG and positive operating cash flow, but Mercury-driven growth, $6.35B of debt and the August 6 earnings report make credit performance the real test.
The screen
Atlanticus Holdings (NASDAQ: ATLC) clears the channel's four hard filters on the latest available market snapshot: July 31, 2026 close.
| Filter | ATLC | Read-through |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. small-cap market value | $1.59B 1 | Below the $10B ceiling |
| TTM sales growth | 68.59% 1 | Above the 30% hurdle |
| PEG ratio | 0.18 1 | Below 1, on Finviz's methodology |
| TTM operating cash flow | $792.74M 2 | Positive |
The screen is real, but the PEG is not portable. Yahoo Finance and StockAnalysis both show PEG as unavailable for ATLC, so 0.18 is a Finviz screen result rather than a universal valuation fact. 3 2
My read: ATLC is a genuine pass with unusually strong reported growth and cash generation. The uncomfortable part is that the growth sits inside a heavily funded consumer-credit balance sheet, and a large part of the step-up came from the Mercury acquisition. The next earnings report should tell investors more about credit quality than the headline PEG does.
What Atlanticus sells
Atlanticus has two reportable segments: Credit as a Service (CaaS) and Auto Finance. CaaS provides private-label and general-purpose credit products through technology, servicing and bank-partner capabilities. Auto Finance purchases or services auto loans, provides floor-plan financing and offers certain installment loans. 4
The central growth event is Mercury Financial, a data- and technology-focused credit-card platform that Atlanticus acquired on September 11, 2025. Mercury became a wholly owned subsidiary. In Q1 2026 it contributed $224.4M of operating revenue and added $3.1B of receivables. 4 5
That distinction matters. This is not a clean, purely organic 68.6% growth story. Excluding Mercury-associated receivables, managed receivables still grew 34.7% year over year; new accounts originated for bank partners rose 41%, while purchase volume increased 12%. The acquisition supplied the step change, but the legacy platform was not standing still. 5
Growth is accelerating, with an acquisition attached
Atlanticus reported Q1 2026 operating revenue and other income of $679.5M, up 97.0% from $344.9M a year earlier. Net income attributable to common shareholders rose 49.8% to $41.9M, and diluted EPS rose 49.7% to $2.23. The company served more than 5.9 million accounts and added more than 600,000 customers during the quarter. 5
The last eight reported quarters show both the acceleration and the lumpy comparison base. Dollar figures are millions; quarterly EPS is diluted. 6
| Quarter | Revenue | YoY growth | Net income | EPS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 679.59 6 | 96.89% 6 | 41.87 6 | 2.23 6 |
| Q4 2025 | 734.39 6 | 107.75% 6 | 32.83 6 | 4.01 6 |
| Q3 2025 | 494.68 6 | 40.84% 6 | 22.67 6 | 1.21 6 |
| Q2 2025 | 394.16 6 | 24.73% 6 | 28.35 6 | 1.51 6 |
| Q1 2025 | 345.17 6 | 18.73% 6 | 27.95 6 | 1.49 6 |
| Q4 2024 | 353.49 6 | 14.37% 6 | 26.29 6 | 1.42 6 |
| Q3 2024 | 351.22 6 | 19.10% 6 | 23.23 6 | 1.27 6 |
The reported four-quarter sum through Q1 2026 is about $2.303B, versus about $1.366B for the prior four-quarter period, which reconciles to roughly 68.6% growth. Yahoo's and StockAnalysis's summary pages also show a separately defined TTM revenue field of $628.89M. That accounting-definition mismatch is unresolved, so the screen's growth rate should be reproduced from the Finviz sales field and the quarterly series rather than mixed with the $628.89M summary field. 1 2 3
Valuation: cheap on the screen, less simple in the statements
Finviz shows ATLC at 15.73× trailing P/E, 8.10× forward P/E, 0.69× price/sales, 12.59× EV/EBITDA and 2.02× price/free cash flow. StockAnalysis shows a higher 2.54× price/sales and 38.20× EV/EBITDA, while also listing a 2.01× price/operating-cash-flow ratio. The source disagreement is too large to hide; financial-company revenue and enterprise-value definitions need to be kept consistent before making a precise peer claim. 1 2
For a rough external anchor, these are three credit-focused stocks on the same Finviz snapshot framework. This is not a formal sector median: the businesses and accounting are not identical.
| Company | Trailing P/E | Forward P/E | P/FCF | EV/EBITDA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ATLC | 15.73 1 | 8.10 1 | 2.02 1 | 12.59 1 |
| Encore Capital (ECPG) | 7.30 7 | 6.73 7 | 12.14 7 | 8.24 7 |
| Medallion Financial (MFIN) | 7.50 8 | 7.05 8 | 1.71 8 | 2.32 8 |
ATLC is more expensive on trailing earnings than these two comparables, but its forward P/E reflects the much faster expected earnings growth. The PEG is doing most of the persuasive work; because other sources do not publish it, the valuation case should be treated as source-sensitive rather than settled.
Cash generation versus balance-sheet risk
StockAnalysis and Yahoo both list $651.13M of cash, $6.35B of total debt and $792.74M of TTM operating cash flow. StockAnalysis reports a 14.67 current ratio and $5.70B of net debt. Dividing that net debt by the site's $191.06M EBITDA gives a mechanical ratio of about 29.8×. For a lender, that is not a directly comparable industrial-company leverage test: much of the borrowing funds the receivables that generate the reported cash flow. It is still the right reason to treat liquidity and funding costs as first-order risks, not footnotes. 2 3
The Q1 2026 10-Q reported $286.3M of operating cash flow, versus $131.6M in Q1 2025. It also reported $5.637B of notes payable, $692.4M of senior notes and $6.781B of total liabilities. The Q1 release says interest expense was $122.8M and should rise through 2026 because of higher debt and borrowing costs. 4 5
Risks to put on the watchlist
- Credit losses can outrun the growth story. Q1 combined principal net charge-offs were $291.7M, up from $163.5M a year earlier in absolute dollars, even as management described a substantial reduction in the net charge-off rate. The portfolio is growing fast, so the dollar comparison is not a clean rate comparison. The practical trigger is the Q2 report: a reversal of the Q1 loss-rate improvement or a reported rise in delinquencies would weaken the thesis. 5
- Mercury must earn its balance-sheet space. Mercury supplied $224.4M of Q1 revenue and $3.1B of receivables. Atlanticus says its initial product, policy and pricing changes are ahead of plan and that the portfolio is performing in line with expectations; the test is whether fair value and credit performance improve over the next several quarters. 5
- Funding costs are rising while leverage is already high. The company says quarterly interest expense should increase through 2026. A Q2 result in which interest expense rises without a comparable improvement in net margin, operating cash flow or receivable performance would make the current valuation harder to defend. 5
- Merchant, bank-partner and regulatory exposure are structural. One larger merchant relationship recently drove much of the private-label receivable expansion, and the filing flags dependence on bank partners, funding sources, economic conditions, fair-value estimates and a VIE structure. A partner contraction, tighter bank oversight or a material funding-market change would hit the model before a headline revenue slowdown appears. 4 5
- Insiders have been selling into a strong run. Yahoo's transaction feed lists sales by David G. Hanna, CEO Jeffrey A. Howard, CFO William R. McCamey and Mitchell Saunders from June 26 through July 1, at roughly $102.20–$109.45 per share; the displayed transaction values range from about $1.02M to $2.60M. That is a monitorable signal, not proof that management's outlook has changed. 9
Price, ownership and analyst expectations
ATLC closed at $105.49 on July 31. Finviz shows a $46.93–$112.61 52-week range, +57.57% YTD, 151.40K average volume and 4.73% short float. The stock has already moved a long way before the Q2 report, so a good quarter may need to beat expectations rather than merely meet them. 1
Ownership data vary sharply by vendor definition. Finviz lists 37.25% insider ownership and 24.60% institutional ownership; Yahoo lists 64.53% and 25.26%, respectively; StockAnalysis lists 62.21% and 24.58%. Treat the exact insider percentage as unresolved, but the broad message is not: insiders control a large portion of the company while institutions own roughly one-quarter. 1 2 10
Yahoo's reported institutional holders include Wellington Management at 4.99%, Dimensional Fund Advisors at 3.46%, BlackRock at 2.85% and Vanguard Capital Management at 1.56%, with the holding dates mostly March 31, 2026. 10
Analyst data are constructive but not uniform. StockAnalysis shows five analysts, a Strong Buy consensus and a $126 average target. Zacks shows six price targets from seven brokerage firms, a $110–$179 range and a $129 average target; its brokerage breakdown is six Strong Buy and one Hold, with an ABR of 1.29. The gap between the two averages is small, but the wide target range says the market is still debating how much Mercury growth and credit risk belong in the multiple. 2 11
The next scheduled checkpoint is the Q2 2026 earnings release after market close on August 6, 2026. The numbers to watch are Mercury revenue and fair-value performance, the net charge-off and delinquency trend, interest expense, operating cash flow and any change in product or policy execution. 1 2
Bottom line
ATLC meets the channel's hard screen: 68.59% TTM sales growth, a 0.18 Finviz PEG, a $1.59B market cap and positive TTM operating cash flow. The useful conclusion is narrower than "cheap growth." Atlanticus is a fast-growing consumer-credit platform whose acquisition has expanded both earnings and obligations. The stock becomes more interesting if Mercury's credit performance improves, legacy growth stays above the screen's hurdle and cash generation keeps outrunning funding costs. It becomes less interesting if the next report shows rising loss rates, heavier interest drag or a need to pay a higher price for slower growth.
For a retail growth investor, ATLC is a candidate for deeper diligence and a watchlist. The August report is the first clean chance to test whether the acquired receivables are becoming a durable earnings engine or simply making the model larger.
This is research for further diligence, not individualized investment advice.
