This original emotional pop ballad is about a message someone never answered, and the friend who died a month later.
The song comes from a post in r/TrueOffMyChest. The poster and their friend went through middle school and high school together. Then university pulled them apart, and for two years the notes the poster sent went unanswered — which they shrugged off, because everyone gets busy.
Out of nowhere, the friend wrote again. He joked about how long it had been, and sent a photo of a card the poster had given him years earlier, found while he was cleaning. They traded a little small talk. He asked how the poster was doing.
The poster never replied. Not for any particular reason — they simply forgot, and figured it could wait a while.
Not even a month later, the friend took his own life. Four years on, the poster is still carrying it: the answer they never sent, the catch-up they never planned, the card he had kept all that time, and the question of why he reached out at all, and why then.
The song is a slow piano ballad that moves at a walking pace. Fingerpicked guitar and bare piano carry the verses; strings and light percussion arrive at the first chorus and step back out of it. The second pre-chorus is nearly empty. The bridge drops away to piano and voice, the last chorus opens all the way up, and a solo piano takes the ending. The whole song turns on the plainest line in it: I didn't write you back.
Listen on the nights you scroll back through an old thread and remember someone you kept meaning to reach; when a name you had not thought about in years comes back with news you cannot undo; or any time you have wondered what one small reply might have changed.
