The Small Gold Pair
A fabricated Boardman, Ohio, jeweler's slip is stamped 12:40 PM on a Thursday: one engagement ring returned, a seventy-five-dollar restocking fee, and — on the way out — one pair of small gold stud earrings. Nineteen hundred and forty-one dollars and forty cents of the ring stays on the store's books, and somewhere past the parking lot a dinner reservation is still holding for Saturday.
“Take the diamond back, take the small gold pair” moves through the flat fluorescents of an emptying mall, an April afternoon at the same glass case, and eleven days of a question he had already been asked. Listen when you are driving somewhere you have decided to go anyway.
